A&W PRESENTS THUNDER IN THE DESERT NL'AKAPXM EAGLE MOTORPLEX ASHCROFT, B.C.SUNDAY May 30 Final Results Results courtesy Gary Raasch, Field Marketing Mgr. NHRA FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BATEMAN MAKES HIMSELF AT HOME, TAKING TWO IN A ROW AT EAGLE MOTORPLEX ASHCROFT, B.C., Canada - Defending Eagle Motorplex champion, Roger Bateman of Calgary, Alb., Canada, took the Federal-Mogul Funny Car title for the second year in a row. Mark Hentges of Federal Way, Wash., drove his Federal-Mogul Dragster to victory at the Eagle Motorplex--host to the third round of the 1999 Northwest Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. After making a bye run in the first round, Bateman met up with fellow Canadian, Mike Giuliani of Abbostford, B.C. in the second round. With Giuliani having lane choice, Bateman was put in the bumpy left lane and did a fine job of driving around the "1000 foot bump" in the track to take the win with a run of 6.036 seconds at 232.85 to Giuliani's run of 6.154 seconds at 228.13. The final pitted Bateman against No. 3 qualifier Dan McGlone. Bateman took the advantage off the line with a .459 reaction time to McGlone's .485 and Bateman never looked back as he took the win light with a run of 5.984 seconds at 233.28 mph to McGlone's run of 6.057 seconds at 232.49 mph. "After we drove around the bump in the semi-finals against Giuliani, we were in good shape going into the finals with lane choice," said an ecstatic Bateman. "I couldn't see McGlone but I knew he was right there. I'm glad we won on our home track and I'm glad we put on a good side-by-side show for the fans." Hentges had the big picture in mind while driving to the Federal-Mogul Dragster victory over defending Northwest division champion, Dale Carlson of Olympia, Wash. In Saturday's qualifying, Hentges went into the third round of qualifying as the No. 1 qualifier and chose not to take the final qualifying attempt. Carlson made the final qualifying attempt and beat out Hentges for the No. 1 qualifying position. This gave Carlson the first round bye and gave Hentges a second round bye into the finals after a first round win over No. 5 qualifier, Don Clease of Mission, B.C. Hentges idled his car down the track on his second round bye run to advance to the finals. In the final, Hentges gave one of the best efforts of the weekend with a run of 5.785 seconds at 241.41mph while Carlson smoked the tires and shut off at the 800 foot mark. "Carlson getting the No. 1 qualifying position was a win-win situation," said a beaming Hentges. "We saved the car two less runs and didn't hurt any parts getting into the finals. I'm really happy with the win, it feels good." Carlson went into the Saturday's second round of qualifying as No. 2 qualifier after making consistently quicker runs in each of his two prior qualifying attempts. Carlson was the only Federal-Mogul Dragster to make an attempt in Saturday's second round of qualifying. Carlson made the best of his single pass with a run of 5.721 seconds at 248.68 mph, taking the Eagle Motorplex e.t. record away from Tiffani Hyland's run of 5.77seconds at 243.37 mph. Earlier, in round one of qualifying, Mark Hentges broke the track speed record with a run of 5.793 seconds at 253.87 mph--eclipsing Hyland's speed record of 243.37 to claim the No. 2 qualifying position. (HH Editor note: It was later determined that Hyland's record was a 5.71, not sure on the mph) "The car just kept getting better on each run," said Carlson. "We have been making slight changes since our run yesterday. The real test will be tomorrow in eliminations." Bateman set the track record in Friday's qualifying session and no one could better that today. Bateman keeps the No. 1 qualifying position with his record run of 5.960 seconds at 233.16 mph. In today's qualifying Bateman made two runs that were less than spectacular. Bateman's second attempt looked very promising until a broken blower belt cut the run short. "The car was perfect, we were going to run another 5.9 [seconds]," said Bateman. "The car felt like it did yesterday when we ran for the record. If the belt didn't go away we might have broke our own record." Gates open at 8 a.m. on Sunday at Eagle Motorplex and eliminations begin at 9 a.m. The following are Friday's qualifying results from the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Nl'akapxm Eagle Motorplex: FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAGSTER FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR COMP ELIMINATOR SUPER STOCK STOCK ELIMINATOR FRIDAY, MAY 28, 1999 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NHRA FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAG RACING SERIES NL'AKAPXM EAGLE MOTORPLEX CALGARY NATIVE, BATEMAN BREAKS TRACK RECORD AT EAGLE MOTORPLEX ASHCROFT, B.C., Canada - 1998 Northwest division Federal-Mogul Funny Car and Eagle Motorplex champion , Roger Bateman, broke the Federal-Mogul Funny Car track record at Eagle Motorplex in the first round of qualifying on Friday. Mark Hentges, runner-up in last year's Federal-Mogul Drag Racing series event at Eagle Motorplex, made the quickest first round qualifying run in Federal-Mogul Dragster even after losing a side panel off his Dragster. Bateman, of Calgary, Ab., Canada, came to his home track and ran the first five-second Federal-Mogul Funny Car lap in Eagle Motorplex history. Bateman led the Funny Car field with a run of 5.960 seconds at 233.16 mph to beat the old record, 6.00 seconds, set in 1997 by Brian Hough. "I knew we ran well, but I thought we ran a 6.2 or a 6.3 [seconds]," quipped Bateman. "The run was so smooth and easy I was surprised when I saw the 5.9. We set the car up soft today, but tomorrow we will step it up a little and see what the car can do." Hentges, of Federal Way, Wash., had the most exciting run of the day when at 1000 feet part of the right side paneling flew off his Federal-Mogul Dragster. This did not slow his qualifying attempt as Hentges ran 5.817 seconds at 241.61 mph to claim the No.1 qualifying position. "It just got real windy," said a happy Hentges. "The panel blew off and I just held on for the finish line." Qualifying and time trials will continue at Eagle Motorplex on Saturday at 9 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Funny Car will have qualifying sessions at 1 and 4 p.m. The following are Friday's qualifying results from the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Nl'akapxm Eagle Motorplex: FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAGSTER FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR COMP ELIMINATOR SUPER STOCK STOCK ELIMINATOR MAY 27-MAY 30, 1999 Thursday, May 27, 1999 Friday, May 28, 1999 (The 5:30 p.m. benefit cash bash contributes to the Federal Mogul All-Stars travel fund to help send the Division Six representatives back to Columbus.
