AUSTIN SETS NATIONAL RECORD - EXPLODES IN FINAL - WALKS AWAY!!!

Pat Austin walked away from one of the most violent alcohol Funny Car engine explosions ever seen, during the final round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series at Mission Raceway Park. Racing against Pete Swayne (who won the event), Austin's Pro Max car had a valve hang open resulting in this frightening fireball/explosion at about the 1200 foot mark. Despite the fact that the concussion blew his neck brace off (it was found in the middle of his lane in the area of the explosion). the Tacoma driver was standing beside the car seconds later telling the NHRA Safety Safari to please not touch anything as he wanted the computer readings left intact. Earlier he had become the first Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver into the 5.50s with a blast of 5.598/253.23 in qualifying. This set a new NHRA National Record, after he backed it up in round two with a 5.63/250.76.

Also today, Melanie Troxel ran a speed of 264.47 on her way to a win in Federal-Mogul Dragster.

In another wild incident earlier in the day, Spokane driver Brett Hordermann went into a towering wheelstand when a brace for the wheelie bar failed.
