The Exeter, Pa. driver moved to within four
points of second place driver Kenny Bernstein in the Winston
point standings with the victory here. This makes it four wins
in four final round appearances so far in 1999 (and the second
in a row) for Amato equaling his number of 1998 wins that came
in six final round appearances. The five time NHRA Winston Top
Fuel champion is the winningest driver in the history of the
class, and may be peaking at just the right time.

Amato burns out prior to the Top fuel final.
He was also the number one qualifier with a track record elapsed
time 4.58 at 312.57.

Runner-up Doug Kalitta had his fourth final
round appearance of 1999 and like all the rest of those money
runs had his American International Airways Dragster grounded
by the competition. Results like that can get kinda boring.

He did pick up top speed of the event at 319.98
during a first round win over Randy Parks, setting a new track
record in the process, eclipsing Bernstein's 318 set last year
during the Friday night qualifying session. His 4.652/306.05
was good for the second position in qualifying.

Winston World Champ Gary Scelzi (near lane)
lost to Kalitta in the semis but got by the MBNA car of 'Mr
Intensity', Cory McClenathan in this round one race with a nice
4.639/306.74. He would run a consistant 4.632/312.21 in round
two to defeat Vandergriff, before facing Kalitta.

The primary race sponsor is also a backer
of the other semi-finalist, Kenny Bernstein. The Bud King took
out Head in round one with a 4.76/300.23 then Hill in round
two running a 4.72/304.80 before falling to Amato in a great
semi-final race that saw the Bud car go .486/4.798/286.62 to
Joe's .489/4.73/296.63.

The Sunday morning lineup of pro drivers really
does provide some rather nice photo opps (as you'll especially
see in our Funny Car coverage). This is quarterfinalist Tony
Schumacher who defeated Larry Dixon in round one with a 4.73/301.
His final race of the day was a second round loss to the eventual
winner.

After his 4.660/306.53 qualifier (good for
number three), Bob Vandergriff looked strong. His first round
win over Grubnic was a 4.73/310.55, followed by a super race
with Scelzi in round two. Both drivers had identical .503 lights
with the Winston car running a 4.632/312.21 to get by the 4.643/301.54
effort from the Jerzees machine.

Winston points leader (by 24 points over Bernstein
after this race) Mike Dunn qualified nineth with a 4.754/295.14,
got by Herbert in round one with a 4.750/291.51 before running
up against Kalitta in round two where his .486/4.83/286 was
no match for Doug's .485/4.63/312.

The rumors were out there (again) that the
yellow sponsor wants a 'younger' person to represent tham in
the near future. I'm not so sure that would be a good idea as
Eddie Hill got the biggest cheer I heard all weekend when he
pulled up the return road after a fine 4.66/307.86 qualifier
(good for 4th spot) on Saturday. He had low ET of eliminations
with a 4.61/308 win in round one over Gibson but could only
muster a 5.02 against Bernstein's 4.73 in round two.

The consummate cool dude, Larry Dixon never
quite looked like a threat here. His 4.74/303 ninth place qualifying
position was followed by a .522/4.90 against Schumacher's .490/4.73
in the first pairing on Sunday.

Tim Gibson made one of the last runs on Friday
night under the lights and qualified the Bill Miller car into
the 13 spot with a 4.81/266. He watched the back of Hill's car
disappear into the round one distance.

Qualifying into the number 12 position with
a 4.78/295 was about as good as it got for Jim Head this weekend.
He lost to Bernstein in round one.

The Snap On Tools dragster of Doug Herbert
was in the top half of the field with a 4.67/298 charge, then
on Sunday he watched Dunn give him a driving lesson in round
one with a .463/4.75/292 win to Herbert's .518/4.71/295.

Dave Grubnick (far lane) qualified 14th with
a 4.93.281 while Randy Parks was the 15th car with a 4.96/280.
The Aussie was taken out by Vandergriff in round one with the
Fluke dragster suffering the same fate at the hands of Kalitta.
