Race #5 July 16/17/18 1999 NHRA Northwest Division
22nd Annual Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series
Brought to you by Les Schwab Tires & KPTV Oregon's 12
Woodburn 1999 Federal-Mogul official results here.

Happy winner Frank Grossi came from the 8th qualifying position
(-0.852 9.69) to take the win.

Runner-up Vaughn Hultsam came all the way from Yuba Cit Ca. to
outlast some of the strongest cars in the nation with his GT/KA
289-powered '93 Mustang.

Grossi's '96 GT/KA 1996 Achieva was in the air all weekend, much
to the spectators delight.

Semi final matchup between Grossi and Jimmy DeFrank saw the Camaro
with a .536 leave then a 10.397 on a .39. It must have been reeeeeeal
close in the lights as Grossi ran a .514 9.895 on an .88!

Over on the other side Hultsman used a .516 11.282 on a .28 to
get by Gary Rouse's close .523 11.064 on an 11.05.

It was very close, but the HH wheelstander of the weekend choice
goes to Guy Czarniak's 1969, 427 SS/DA Camaro. The Redding. Ca pilot
took the car to the 5th position with a -0.897 9.603.

Second-best wheelie car of the event was Harry Holton's awesome
SS/BA hemi-powered '65 Belvedere. Modesto driver was the number
four qualifier at -0.916 9.284 and went all the way to a quarter
final match-up with Grossi.

Steve Wann was about the only vehicle I noticed with the 'circled
R' on the window. He did apparently get the record, but unfortunately
I did not get any official paperwork confirming it. Modesto 'trucker'
qualified the big '96 Dodge GT/TD sixth with a -0.891 10.859.

My hero Dave Wren had a great outing in Mike Booker's Mopar SS/BA.
The Lynden Wa. veteren qualified 15th at -0.642 9.55 then went all
the way to the quarter finals before meeting Hultsman.

The 'D-Boyz' dominated qualifying going one-two with Tony's GT/GA
Pontiac numero uno at -1.052 10.148 and Jimmy second with a -0.998
10.352 in the GT/HA Chevrolet.

Howard Thompson was on hand with his beautiful '95 Mustang GT/EA
from Wildomar California. He was 11th with a -0.778 10.172 in the
460 inch Cobra.

What can you say about Terry Sherrill that hasen't already been
expressed many times before. This thing is simply the coolest Super
Stocker on the left coast. He was number three here in the 387 inch,
'57 Vette at a -0.921 8.629.

Holton chases down Butch Walsh in round one.

Seattle winner Rod Stultz in the SS/LA '64 Chevelle wagon lost
this first round race with Jeff Davison in his SS/NA '72 Vista Crusier.
