Maybe the best moment of the weekend was Glen May puttin' on a SHOW...with a THUNDERING 1/8th mile burnout on his first run Saturday morning. The video gives me shivers. A HH2000 shot fer sure. Which reminds me; work on HH is expected to begin next week, for a planned delivery date of Friday June 23 at the Mission Federal-Mogul.
It was a bittersweet moment here on Sunday when we saw the end
of beautiful relationship. Some may even have seen it as the passing of the
torch. When I saw Dave Wren wheel that white aluminum '63 Plymouth into the
Pro final beside Cory Thompson.
I
was one of only a very few who realized what this was. "I was Super Stock
runner-up at the 1968 Winternationals with it" says Wren with a huge smile.
"I guess it did have a lot of runner-up finishes". The car is going
to Las Vegas for what I later 'was told' to be a hefty amount indeed. Regardless,
it is a car he once sold to a guy from Vancouver Island, Port Alberni I think.
"Lyle Kidd was his name" says Dave. "And lemme tell ya another
story about that guy" With another bearded grin he tells of his
first meeting with Kidd.
"He and his wife drove to my old place in Montana in the early 70s or late 60s in a Long Ram Chrysler 300" They were on their way to Mexico. "I put in the Pomona-winning motor and off they went." Can you even imagine what that must have been like? Touring down to Tijauana in a ride like that? "They had a great time, and the motor never missed a beat" he added.
I got to see Dave when he pulled behind the tower with the car on the ramp truck. Rory McNeal was there. Rory knew what this was too. I now cringe releasing I didn't shoot it. But I got that last run, and that's how I'll always remember Dave in this car. Runner up.
Ya, so apparently NHRA has a 6.30 limit on Pro Mods at NHRA tracks. I believe that's the Advanced ET (ADVENT) number isn't it? Whatever it is, it's too slow, and they gotta change it, or we'll loose these things. Rowe went .32 here and got a friendly reminder from local officials. It's not their fault. I hope they can move to the same as what IHRA currently has...I heard something around 6.0??? That would work...for now. These cars are currently to Drag Racing what the AA/GS cars were 40 years ago. HUGE.
The track worked for everyone who won on it, the quickest of whom set track records. The MRP surface is still there, but like any old fart has gotten a little crusty with age. When Glen May ran a 6.49 in the first session that saw half the field blow their tires off I realized it. Those who have experience running quick here have a definite edge over those who have less. They used to be able to come here, on those cool, perfect May and October days when they just ran the balls off the thing, and it usually went straight. Today, unless it is one of those perfect days, you still gotta work for it, a little harder than you did six years ago.
HEY Trevor Lowe has a site DO IT! http://www.trevorloweracing.com
It was great to see Jim Sibley back on a little trike scooter. He's in charge of the handicapped box for awhile, so if any of you wheelers have a problem, see him there every drag race weekend. Somebody please send me his email too!
The old van went out today. Rumor I heard was it was going to
Rick Farmer. Any truth to that Ricky? Would LOVE to see this thing restored
to it's original luster.
The 'Buffed One' Chris Eggen is just 'Hootin' these days, after his former Kenny Goodell Trans Am flopper was featured in living color in the latest Hooters Restaurant magazine! Buff on!
And finally when you thought nothing about motorcycles could make ya smile, here's another bike story, this time a neat one. Bro' Jake of CFMI 101 morning infamy, is reported to be a former drag racer. NO chit! A decent one too, as a number of people have told me that he truly was the first Canadian to go eight seconds on a drag bike! Wow...COOL! Gotta find out what kind of piece he rode. I believe it was somewhere in Ontario, no idea how long ago. So call into CFMI tomorrow morning and ASK HIM! BUG the crap out of him until he talks about it one air! I can see it now...some other local DJ goes out and tries to go quicker, and within' two years we have four local personalities on Pro Fuelers...it could happen.
