Click here to go back in time

...back to even before the famed Seattle 64 Funny Car races. You are about to relive the final round of the 32 Car Coca Cola Seafair Funny Car Champions...'Under the lites at S.....I.....RRRRRRRR!'

Now listen children as we begin a long journey to the past....back very late into a hot Saturday evening (about 11pm) to Seattle International Raceway circa 1972...August the 5th to be exact. About 14,000 of us were there, maybe you were too. This is the one audio clip I released as background on one of my Horsepower Heaven videos. It features Bill Doner in his prime and much of the car sounds you hear are through the speakers from his microphone high in the 'Oly' tower, as I sat on the back of my dad's pickup at the thousand foot mark...right on the fence. It was recorded with an ancient Sanyo cassette deck/am radio on one of the original "Compact Cassette" tapes, that still plays to this day...thank goodness for made in the USA!

We follow the live action of that exciting final round with a couple of radio ads from the same year ending with a Garlits interview by one of the old KJR jocks. I will soon supliment this page with a number of photographs and results of the race. And oh yes, I also have lots more recording from this one to come. Beebe setting the track record, Ruth and the Max's (Tharp) side-by-side 1/4 mile burnouts, Dunn's rear engine car on it's best ever run, and lot's more!
