DAY 3, Wednesday July 29, 1998 Woodburn Dragstrip's 9th Annual Pro Stock Invitational (Part 2)The race is a Chicago-style affair with all cars running two rounds then the quickest four Pro Stocks coming back to run off for first/second, third/fourth. The Trucks just go for winner and runner-up. Please note that for the round results I had to go from my video, so not all the info is here. Pro Stock Trucks Round 1 (left lane at left, best numbers of round in red)
Pro Stock Round 1 (left lane at left, best numbers of round in red)
AA/GS special match-up...and very red-cheeked I missed the name of the other driver: Wayne Harry Willys 7.40/181.67 to a 7.70/179.21 Pro Stock Trucks Round 2 (left lane at left)
Pro Stock Round 2 (left lane at left)
Before the final a few came up to test including Todd Patterson who blasted a 7.77/172.77 track record in the left lane, but it didn't last long.
In the final the senior Eaton drive Dale came up in the left lane against the Godfather of the class Jerry Haas in his familier orange Chevy. A big speed of 173.24 combined with a 7.82 for Hass came after a red light start however as Eaton's Atsco Dodge motored to a great 7.75/172.61 for the win.
Coming out to go for third and fourth spot in Pro Stock was Mike
Edwards and Bruce Allen. The Outlaw shut off early allowing Edwards
a clean run to the finsh with a nice 6.999/196.63 charge. Then came the race everyone wanted to see. KJ against WJ...father vs. son...Chevy taking on Pontiac, all with the the remote thought of seeing the big two-oh-oh come up on the board. It was over early as Warren drew the bulb, giving Kurt the win to the tune of 6.989/197.62. The effort of WJ still drew much response as his 6.931/199.86 set both ends of the track record, and came oh-so-close to 200. In the Super Stock/Stock portion of the program Steve Hanby energed the victor over a good number of stout competitors that even included touring Pro Dan Fletcher. In the final it was Hanby's '85 Camaro up against Jeff Cheney's '71 Duster. Hanby left first (12.36 dial) followed by Cheney's better .551 to .573 on a 11.43 dial. In the lights it was Hanby's 12.393 taking the win light as Cheney hit the brakes too hard and slowed to a 11.48. Margin of victory .003-second! Santa Barbara's David Carroll took his popular '54 Vette to a win in Super Gas getting past stout Div. Seven driver Troy Moyle. Thanks to Jon Adams' fine report that was faxed to us we learned that "Carol, who has owned the car since 1961, had an average reaction time of .408 in the six round race. And he wasn't just sharp at the starting line. In six rounds, Carroll's biggest margin at the finish line was .036-second in the third round. When he had a .410 to .430 advantage on the tree over David Cook, and ran 9.92 to Cook's 9.93. in the final, Carroll had his worst light of the event, a .411, to Moyle's .407. At the top end, Carroll, who had never advanced past the second round at any Super Gas event, was able to drive around Moyle, 9.91 to 9.92, for a margin of victory of just .005-second."
Both Jay Fulcher and Bill Heard ran under in the Super Pro final with Fulcher's 11.587 (11.60 dial) defeating Heard's 9.634 (9.65 dial). Bob White took the Pro crown when John Floyd Jr. red-lighted in the money run. EPILOGUE: Coming into this race the track records were held by WJ at a 6.995 (ok, so i was wrong) and Bob Glidden's 198.01. I got to meet noted drag race artist Roger Pederson at this event, and hope to bring some examples of his work to the site soon...maybe even as a RealVideo file. To close the show the Double A Gassers came out with the Chevy posting a 7.63/184.01 that trailed an amazing 7.53/196.89 for Harry's winged Willys. I have no idea what the fastest speed is for one of these things, but that was a damn impressive pass!
Later that evening Rich and I had a great pizza (that's a joke), with Scrabba and Grossmith in a 'session' which resulted in more 'rumors, lies and gossip' than even this page can handle. We stumble back to the Super 8 and metup in the elevator with a still ballistic Roy Hill....nite all.
