Horsepower Heaven FEEDBACKOk people, here's your chance to sound off. Unless you state in your email that you DO NOT want it (or your full identity...and/or email address) posted, or it's just plain obvious to me, it's fair game to post here. Even if you post from ANY email link to me on this site. Be aware that everyone from NHRA brass to my mother read all this on a regular basis, so be nice... NOTE: newest from top August/September 1998 Feedback page Date: Wed, 23 Dec 1998 Subject: You Warned me... There you go! You said you had plans for the flippin' butterflies, and there they are! Far freakin' out! Still get a little delay, but I've noticed that on other sites with roll-overs. Been working with Dreamweaver 2 (demo) but some of the stuff escapes me...it just won't co-operate, and the on-line documentation is sparse... Now, I'll just have to wait until Monday to see the new stuff.
I hate you. Happy Holidays, Jim Actually I had a throttle blip Java sound on them for a bit, but if you think they're slow the way they are now...I had to get rid of it, but damn it was really cool. Oh for some bandwidth! Even the printed documentation with Dreamweaver sucks. Jimmy got a sneak preview of the Xmas stuff. I think he went to sleep with a smile on his face last nite! LP From: Wrenchski@aol.com Subject: housecleaning? HEY LP- you move the furniture around more than my wife does...LOL... Just think, if I ran NHRA we could have a new eliminator every couple of months! LP Sender: surfite@mail.halcyon.com Subject: HH Teasers... Well, Mr. Larry, you seems to have the fine art of tormenting the viewing public down to a science! Might you be the one who puts the little bumpers on the TV news for an intriguing little segment, only to have to wade thru the entire broadcast, to find out it's only a 15 second piece with almost no info? Grrr. And I'm sure you realize that the computer here at Screenprint Central will be cold from X-mas eve day on until the following Monday? Do you know how I am jonesing for your wit and insight? You know that you're making me quite insane. But it wasn't far to go. Later Jim I'm a big Vincent Price fan. PS: the 'torture' scene on Raw is War this week was um..'.interesting' eh? LP Subject: Rumors Just thought a quick Merry Christmas would be in order. Contrary to what you have heard I AM NOT LEAVING Div. 6. Although I was offered the tech director position in Div. 7, I have decided to turn down the position. I'm looking forward to seeing each and every one of you who read this in 1999. Top Comp should be a blast next year (maybe some of your local pro mod guys could show up at MRP--hint-hint). If you hadn't noticed this is Mike Rice even though I'm using Kevin Kosir's (former Super Pro GOD) address. If anyone might want to reach me use this address. Although I have not made a comment on Top Comp...yet, believe me when I agree with you. Now what happened to that six pack...PS make sure you check out the final image on the HH 98 RealVideo trailer, due up later today... LP From: "Bob Behnke" Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 Hi Larry, Well Christmas is almost here, are you ready for it? I don't know but every year Christmas just seems to come around faster and cost more. Me & Dodge "Jim" are working on a couple of little projects in the shop. Jim is getting the Cuda ready for a new paint job thanks to Bad Brad & Eagle Collision. I have been working on our PRMC sponsorship for another year for Jim and I am happy to say that the Pacific Regional Maintenance Council will be sponsoring Jim again in 1999 along with Eagle Collision , B&J Parts, Prolong lubricants, Abbottsford Automatic,& Pro-West Converters. As far as the Buick goes I really want to run in Super Street but we will see how it goes. I am planing to come out with the low compression motor to start the year off and while the car was running 10.70 at the end of the year with this combo I am not sure if it will make the 10.90 index in the heat of summer. Otherwise I will put the throttle stop back on and shoot for high 12"s around 120 in Super Pro. Well thats all for now I will be around all over the Holidays should you have time to get out give me a call at home and drop over for a couple of suds and a B|S session, we would love to see you old friend Bob Behnke Thanks for the invite buddy, once the snow melts I will hop on the river ferry and take you up on the offer. Hey, I hear a rumor that Jimmy is going Stock racing??? I even got a bit o' dirt on MRP further down this page. I must take this time to also thank Brad for the killer body work he did on my Blazer this year. Anyone looking for good work at good prices give him a call at 604-942-8002...and tell Bad Brad Larry and Bob sent ya! Say hi to everyone pal, hope you have a great holiday season. See ya soon! LP From: "Sean Douglas" Date: Fri, 18 Dec 1998 Can you please send me some information on how to order the video tape? Hi Sean. I will have a page up very soon regarding the new tape as well as all the old ones. There is a lot of info to post, but basically you mail me a cheque for $30 Cdn or $20 U.S. I also have some package deals available, as I have produced nearly 20 different tapes over the past six years. I will have everything up by 1999. LP From: "Scott New" Subject: Firebird Online Date: Thu, 17 Dec 1998 Hi Larry, Just thought (if I hadn't sent you a note on this previously) to let you know the Firebird Web Site is now "officially" located at: www.firebirdonline.com Our previous URL was a bit on the long side, so we decided to step up to the plate and capture the "real deal". Both Tomi and Nick Schaefer (Tri-S Racing) do a wonderful job managing our site throughout the course of the season. We certainly couldn't do it without their assistance. As you well know, these babies can be a "lot" (now that's an understatement) of "work". At the same time, it's important for any web site to change, otherwise they become stale. One of our goals is to continually update our "What's New" section at least once a week, 52 weeks a year. It does take some time to do, but we feel this gives reason to return to our site. Anyway, on behalf of the New Crew in Idaho, best wishes to you up in Horsepower Heaven during the holidays. Scott New ...from the "original" Firebird Raceway P.S.-On a separate note, we can't wait to debut the brand new Top Comp class at Firebird on April 15-18, 1999. It's a class that is quickly taking those of us in the "intermountain west" by storm. The phone lines haven't stopped ringin', since we officially made the announcement shortly after proposing the dynamic new category to our fellow operators in Division 6 and the NHRA hierarchy. Thanks Scott, now I have yet another reason to update my links page. Firebird continues to lead the way with the best Div. 6 track site IMHO...The Top Comp debut will hopefully be the tease that will finally see me visiting your facility. I can't think of a better reason. Happy holidays to everyone out Firebird way! LP From: "Bill Pratt" Subject: Drag Racing List Online Updated - 12/15/1998 Greetings racers and fans! Drag Racing List Online has been updated with all the times through the end of the 1998 drag racing season. Of course, we continue to build the DRL lists "backwards" as well, with lots of new historic listings. Our information is growing by leaps and bounds both in quantity and quality. If you haven't surfed by in a while, come check out our new navigation scheme and on-site search engine! We have new products listed, too, just in time for the holiday season (but HURRY!) As always, we are looking for our veteran racers to update us on any info we are missing for their racing efforts. Whether we are missing whole years, certain cars, crewchief names, or are just a few cubic inches off, it's all important to us. We want the lists to be as complete as possible! PLUS!!! We want to put together a page for 1999 that lists all the heads up drag races from all over the country and world. We want to become THE place race fans can go to see WHERE THE MATCH RACING IS! Track owners, race circuit directors, racers, or fans: let us know where the action is next year and we will publish it! Thanks and Happy Holidays! P.S. - This email update has been sent to drag racing fans, racers, and sport professionals we have encountered along the way. If you have received this update in error or if you otherwise do not wish to receive DRL updates, please reply and I will remove you from our list personally. Thanks. Bill From: "Bruce McCallum" Subject: Question Date: Tue, 15 Dec 1998 I came out to Mission with my old neighbor who just started racing a 84 Chev Shortbox and while I was out their that day last summer I was talking to a man that was racing a Green 59 beetle that had a turbo on a 1835 cc motor. I was wondering if you know of any way that I could get a hold of him because he said that he had an extra turbo for sale for an aircooled VW. Running an email site that is based on Mission raceway, I would assume you would know who I was talking about. Thanks Ted Ingram Potbelly@direct.ca I am not sure who this is, but maybe sombody else does. LP Mon, 14 Dec 1998 Subject: HH X-URL: http://www.horsepowerheaven.com/hhnavigation.html Hey Larry: I was going thru my links and clicked on your site...I hadn't visited 'er in a while. re: http://www.horsepowerheaven.com/hhfamoso8.html "The other race featured Bill Dunlap on the far side facing Jim Murphy. Both cars had problems downtrack with Murphy's WW II moving into the final with a 6.29/236.15 effort over Dunlap's slowing 6.32/203" That's actually Howard Haight in the Circuit Breaker car, not Dunlap... Take care, CC Great to hear from the Cooncemeister after a long time. As I said in my personal reply, since I didn't get to meet you this time, it just gives me more ammo to come back in '99! And thanks for the correction as well as the number info! LP From: "David Loney" Subject: The "Hit's" tape...is a Hit! Larry, I intercepted my Christmas present last Saturday when I picked up my new video from the mail box. All I have to say is you da man! The tape was a huge hit at my house, the footage of the Turbo bike carrying the front wheel to half track, and all those half track pro-mod burnouts are awesome. The guy with the Blown K-B powered 67-ish Barracuda was the best. The sound of the motor/blower singing makes my hair stand up! The old full size Chevy truck beating up on the smaller, sleeker blown Pro-Mod cars was also great. All my friends loved it too...and I'm not letting them borrow the tape!! This tape is just what I needed for the long cold winter...I give it two thumbs (and some hair) up! Dave Loney quarter_miler@hotmail.com Thanks Dave, and 'Old Timer' Bill Visser who still owns that Cuda gives you a thumbs up! Actually check out the mail from Terry McHardy below, as he drives the car now. The new tape is coming along slowly, and will certainly be the best one yet. The new Radius EditDV system is so cool I can't believe it. I have it almost all sorted out and will post the new HH '98 Trailer in RealVideo real soon! LP From: "Einar Jiménez" Subject: Budbabes and Motorshow babes Hey man, quite nice pics of budwiser babes!!!. here in Perú we have a Motor Show, with beautiful girls also. (like the one of the pic attached !!!) Do you have more budweiser babes ?? See ya
I bet you found out about this stuff from Wilson's site huh? Thanks for the pic, not exactly 'drag racing' but it works for me. The rest of the BudBabe stuff will be on the new video, but in the meantime, how's this? LP
...and now from the annon dept: Winston wanted out of the 1998 "Finals" because they knew they would be handing in the "settlement" at that time and looked at giving it away at that time. Winston feels like doing the event in Bristol (aka Tobacco Road) won't get the negative backlash that it would in the #2 market of > L.A. T. Wayne had planned on giving the event to another RJR Nabisco Company but Cliff Pennell decided to give it another run because he didn't want to bail out on it in mid-stream. There is a very strong possibility that NASCAR might say thanks but no thanks to Winston. I hear it was discussed at the Winston Cup Track Ops meeting in New York recently, that NASCAR has several major companies lined up that want to be involved but are hesitant because it is associated with "Big Tobacco." NASCAR may not sell the title rights to Winston Cup just because they don't have to. There's also talk that they may do the same with Busch Grand National just because of the negative aspects of alcohol and driving. One of the comments made was "Major League Baseball isn't known as the Burger King Baseball Series." NASCAR may say see ya' later to Winston. I may be wrong, but NASCAR is looking at "mainstreaming" the sport according to this very good source. The reason for the lost TNN Deal? NASCAR, for many years, has allowed the individual tracks to sell their own TV packages and keep 100% of the profits. As a result in 1999 you will have 7 Networks covering races with rates ranging from $350,000 - $2,000,000 (or more) per race. NASCAR is telling their track ops that they are going to try to put one big package deal together so that everyone can get rich (like the billions spent on the NFL). All of the Networks are posturing themselves for this to occur. CBS (along with their network TNN) are trying to secure as many events as possible to get themselves even more established and to try to take away some of ESPN and ABC's thunder. Also keep in mind that TNN and NASCAR are partners on Silicon Motor Speedway, NASCAR Thunder and NASCAR Cafe. Where do you think the package will go? NASCAR threw ESPN the Craftsman Truck Series as a bone to make it look like they will be spreading the wealth. In order to keep their viewers TNN is doing more stuff that they own.. such as Roller Derby, Demo Derbies and stuff they get for free Monster Trucks and Sprints, who will take whatever they can get . This enables them to keep the demographic they want that is, believe it or not, closely related to NASCAR without spending alot of cash. They are putting all, and I mean all, of their eggs in one basket in hopes they get it. ABC and ESPN are going to make a shot at it, but they have Indycar and IRL as a backup (though it won't give them enough weekends). FOX is also looking to court NASCAR for a possible deal on the BGN. So that sort of left everyone standing around waiting. Rumor has it that NHRA looked to have an exclusive deal with a major "cable" network who has never done racing but something didn't fall in place as planned and it died for 1999. Glendora then had to settle for plan B. When this whole NASCAR deal goes down in 2000 (or 2001 according to National Speed Sport) NHRA will suddenly become popular again. I think you'll see networks such as ESPN and ABC (as a partner) and TBS, TNT and NBC (the same folks who bring you the NBA and who don't have football > anymore) looking at NHRA and things such as ASA, Motorcycles and lesser stock car series. There's also talk that NBC is looking at investing in a major new road racing circuit, I have no idea why. NHRA's deal with RJR goes through the end of 2001 so they fall into the right area of the contract according to the Tobacco settlement. One major company already sponsoring a car and events has said they will take over when that time comes. Winston was investing $5 million, roughly the same cost as what they spend on Jimmy Spencer's Winston Cup car, to do NHRA. With the cost of Winston Cup Team sponsorship now approaching $10 million for primary, the NHRA "series" will soon look like a value. Did you see what Team Kool Green will be getting annually for CART? Regarding McDonald's... The reason McDonald's is cutting out of everything is because they lost a big chunk of their market in the last 1 1/2 years. They cleaned house with Marketing and dropped Fallon-McElliott last year and brought in a new group who plans to get back to basics. They cut back everything from Michael Jordan commercials and celebrity endorsements to racing and even Happy Meal Movie Tie-ins. That's why McDonald's is now promoting stuff like .39 cheeseburgers and two pies for a dollar. They have to get their customers back. As far as Coke, Pepsi and the others. It seems all they care about right now is cutting deals with stadiums and arenas to get pouring and official beverage rights. Some of those deals could fund Cory Mac for 20 years. My personal opinion is that NHRA, in a worse case scenario with the sales department doing nothing, will float along without a hassle for two or three years. Then, all of a sudden, some TV exec at a major network is going to see the only way they can have racing on the tube is to go drag racing. Sponsorship then follows. Having met those guys who sold dog food for a living I think they may actually break through and open some doors. It means that guys trying to >climb the ladder the old fashioned way can only hope for a race ops job in the future because you will have to have an MBA to play in the corner offices. As much as I hate it, it is the best way to go. NASCAR and Speedway Motorsports didn't take off until they started hiring Ivy League bankers to crunch the numbers and look at the big picture. You still need people who know drag racing looking at rules, race ops and racer relations and logistics. You need a personal service rep examining the "fan experience" to make sure the NHRA experience is "entertaining" to get butts in the seat. And you need businessmen running the business. ...as hard as it is to say that. The racers want NHRA to be as successful as NASCAR. At the same time they want it to be like it once was. That's where you will have to have the suits meeting the grunts (officials) and trying to make it a better deal. As you may have noticed Bruton Smith bought Las Vegas. Keep a close, and I mean close, eye on this. Bruton knows he can't get Winston Cup dates unless he spends 215 million, he can spend $30 million and build an NHRA track that will be considered state of the art and gets a guaranteed date. Sears Point, Bristol and, now, Vegas will be the tip of the iceburg. This is coming from someone who knows everyone with that organization and has worked with Speedway Motorsports, Inc. in the past, not from someone associated with NHRA. Interesting huh? LP From: "Brent Trottier" Subject: MRP Date: Fri, 11 Dec 1998 It will be a sad day if Aubrey, Bill and Joan are no longer at MRP. Any time we have been there we were treated royally by these three people. Brent Trottier Although I agree, I hear Aubrey will be back, but Bill and Joan 'probably' won't. I found it very interesting to note that after my previous tirade, this was the one and only response I recieved on this subject. Maybe nobody does care. I would like to thank Woodburn Dragstrip and Division 6 office for supporting the Pro Sportsman Motorcycle Class Divisonal Winner. This class is not officially supported by NHRA and prize money is not allocated for the year end divisional winner. The Division 6 Office and Woodburn Dragstrip kicked in money to support the class. Pro Sportsman Motorcycle is an exciting and fast class with many quality racers bringing high dollar machines and professional attitudes to the races. We are hoping to gain more support and exposure in the future with the ever increasing popularity of this class. On a side note - IMHO from reading your web site lately anything to do with staff and people at MRP should not be aired in public and is nobodies business but MRP's. It does no good except for soap opera reading. PS - can you do some more audio, it is nice to here your voice when you are really fired up! PPS - How about a chat room in your cafe, I can send you a link for one if needed. That's about as pfired up as I will be in public, Thanks Larry! Glenn #6462 aka #61 I'm glad Mark's and Glenn's emails came back-to-back like this, it gives us all a chance to see two somewhat opposing views of how and what to post here on HH. On one hand you have Mark who is usually not afraid to say anything about anybody, and usually can do it without a lot of name-calling. Then we have Glenn who feels that maybe the soap opera kind of stuff has no place here. I made a point of trying to get across the fact that the only reason I brought the latest MRP stuff up was not just to post something right out of Drudge-Land. I had a very respected longtime racer tell me that he was worried that the possible staff changes may have a effect on track safety. The way he explained it to me made me realize there may well be something to it. I don't really want to do this kind of thing any more, but when I get six phone calls in 24 hours from different racers all basically worried about the same thing, I feel it is worthwhile mentioning here. It will definitely interest people that in the 24 hours since that has been up this has been the only email I have received regarding it. Maybe I was out of line posting it, but until the feedback comes in...or doesn't come in, I like to at least attempt to see if that many people are that concerned. It may also be just another one of those things that many people are more than willing to discuss in private but not in public. To me rumors are fine left in private, safety concerns are not. If I posted a tenth of the stuff I hear on HH, I could probably triple my hit count, but would have about as much respect as... A day later the latest soap-opera query may have already been answered, and unless the response all of a sudden floods in will see me putting my efforts into other things for HH. As for the chat room, I have thought about it, but if you think I post stuff that may or may not be suitable, most of the chat rooms I have seen are so full of crap I rarely go to them. It may take a bunch more effort on my part to moderate the HH Feedback, but at least it sorts out the real garbage. Maybe there's an easy way to do a chat room and if so would love to hear it. Let me know Glenn. Anything we can do to promote more communication is good for the sport. Entertainment is secondary. PS: Here's to the support that the bikers got this year. It's a great class that too often gets overlooked! LP From: "Mark Davis" Hi Larry, Last year I wrote to Chris Blair several times to express my opinion about bracket racing in Div. 6. I suggested that the Mission Super Quick series should be set up to run like IHRA's Top Dragster and Top Sportsman series . You know, 5/10ths tree, no shield, crossover allowed. Well it just fell on deaf ears. Now suddenly, Chris has this great new idea for a class called Top Comp... From the NHRA website, "I believe that we are launching the class that may change the face of Sportsman drag racing in NHRA," said Division 6 Director Chris Blair. Geeze.... Great idea Chris. What's next, crossover in Super Pro? Mark Davis. NHRA #670 Never one to beat around the bush, it's fun and exciting to have Mark back here contributing. He's a bit of a regular over on the NHRA Newsgroup , and is always good for some no BS comments that always get some kind of feedback. LP From: "Dean Kilback" Hi Larry, Taking you up on a chance to thank some of the people that helped out: Dave Wilson of The Say Know to Drugs Team Thanks for the help in 98: That's what this is for Dean. Every little bit helps when you go back to that sponsor in '99 with your hand out. LP
