Horsepower Heaven FEEDBACK Nov. 98

Ok people, here's your chance to sound off. Unless you state in your email that you DO NOT want it (or your full identity...and/or email address) posted, or it's just plain obvious to me, it's fair game to post here. Even if you post from ANY email link to me on this site. Be aware that everyone from NHRA brass to my mother read all this on a regular basis, so be nice...

Subject: Dueling Websites

Hoky Smokes! Just read the new feedback. You know, I check this dang site a couple of three times a day, you're just SOOOO sneaky when it comes to posting updates.

Seems Like ol' JW and I have kinda the same idea. I also have put together a funnycar website, but I'm going a little deeper into the 60's. Fact of the matter is, Ewald had a bunch of stuff that he can't use on the Diggers site, and he sent 'em to me. So, there's a bunch of SoCal funnys, some Jerry Ruth stuff, and some stuff that just came wandering in from the street. I'm trying to keep from going too far into the 70's, you know, wheel bubbles and all that. But I've already got a link to your site AND to JW's site. Link to me? Idunno. It's just for fun and to have somewhere to put all this stuff. Now, when I get the Fuel Altered site up and running...we'll talk.

So what's your take on a REAR engine dragster site? Ewald and I have conversed, and the idea doesn't seem to have the same interest as the front motor cars do. Opinion?

So here's the url for the funny site...

Whatever. http://www.halcyon.com/surfite/Welcome

Later to ya! Jim

For all you fiberglass forest fanatics, go check out this site. I went there during the big wind storm of a week ago, and despite flickering lights, and all kinds of power surges hung in there to the bitter end (of the cool pics...not my motherboard).
I now have a bunch of neat stuff from JW that I will be putting together in a few days along with scanning him a few local 70s fuel coupe pics.

As for a rear-engine digger site....I believe Jim and Don are thinking of the older ones which is fine by me. I know I have a bitchin' Pomona shot of the shorty white Texan car to submit...or maybe this of Lou Patane at thr '79 Winters:

Please be aware that my links page is already in drastic need of updating is on my list of stuff to do. LP

Subject: Website Stuff

Larry Just visited your site for the first time in a while...really like the way it's set up! Got a couple things you might be interested in....

- Got a bunch of pics from 98 AHRA World Finals at Spokane as well as the T/F and F/C round by round results...don't know if you want to add to your site, but you're welcome to 'em.

- Trade ya links....I'll add your site to mine, if you'll add me to yours....actually I'll add you anyway. My site caters to 70s funny cars (since I've got lots of pics from that era, had to find something to do with them). Address is: http://funnycar.cnchost.com/FunnyCars.shtml

- Lastly, you got any color pics of 70's F/Cs from the NW I could add to the site when I build Round #3, which BTW will likely be a frames deal to speed downloading. I'm sorely lacking on cars from that region, looking for one or two shots to represent that era/region.

Thanks Jeff Thomas (aka JW Last)

I will definately be in touch with you regarding the Spokane stuff, as well as doing my best to get you some 70s Northwest Flopper pics. The link deal is the same as I do for everybody - when I get time, but at least it is here for now. LP

Hi Larry.
After a very frustating season trying to get our car down the track full throttle it is indeed a good time to thank every one that helped us this year:

Burnaby Auto Parts-Surrey
Edmonds Battery Langley.
Bog
And Dave Wilson always so helpfull the last six years.
Also numerus people known and unknown to us that offered help to sort out the problems.

Boyd Wylie Wylie and Webb - Novel T

Another 'nostalgia' type racer who tries to do it a little different than the average person. Always a fun car to watch go down the racetrack! LP

Hi Larry, The announcement of the newly created "Top Comp" eliminator made me think some one could be playing a bad joke on me. I was afraid to take it seriously, could something so perfect for us actually be on the brink of becoming a reality?

Bracket Wars @ 200? I better dig out that 10% over pulley that I have been saving and get the inventory stocked up cause I have a feeling that it's going to be a hell of a year!

Brian

I can feel the smile on your face from here Mr. B. I think the Division is maybe ready for a four port Hilborn-huffed shorty front-motor car, that's about as consistant as an 11 second Camaro. I know I am, and can't wait. This announcement has recieved some good response over on the NHRA Newsgroup. Sounds like a winner already. LP

PS-Watched half of yer "greatest hits" vid-by tha sheer numbers of appearances, I get the distinct feeling that guy driving tha wheelstandin' "Pipe Smoker" Camaro was tha ONLY one who wasn't thinkin' he'd WRECK sooner or later...

Here we are three years later and ole' Roger Leroux is still launching that car the same way he always did...well maybe not the same way he did on that run, but he still comes out now and again to put on a show. I remember back when he was trying to decide if he wanted to do wheelies or try to be a little more competitive. Thankfully, for us photogs at least, he decided to keep up getting it up. Sometimes I wish more racers would have that attitude. LP

Subject: Thanks for 1998

Larry- Thanks for the comments in your "firing up" column. it's nice to see after a hard fought year. A few thanks to the people that helped along the way:

God, for the opportunity to do all this.

Wayne Harry's Machine, home of the first pre-WWII 6 second 200mph AA/GS. a great machinist, and a great guy.

Steve and Patty Federlin, for her computer support, and his transmission wizardry.

Britt Smart, my excitable("I promise I'll get excited if we win again") friend, and support guy. He hates being called crew chief. "A crew chief does more than pour gas and check tires". Yes Britt, you did.

Ted "The Hoser" Buerk. He is one of us Slo-Poks in Vancouver, U.S.A., and stepped up with alot of help at the end of the year. He made my year end southern swing alot easier. Yes, he is a hockey fan from the great white north.

Steve Denbo. If I told you stories, your Mom would be offended, Larry.

Scott Bacon, my beer mentor. He DOES know how much to consume on Saturday evening to get a good light on Sunday. Some day, he'll drink Bud.

Family Affair Racing, for their support, and advice. Sam and Jeff are great thinkers.

A group that I could ramble all night on (kinda like I did at the banquet): The Leerkamp Family, Rick and Shari Webb, Frank, Susan, and Scott Parks, Tim Cole, Steve Wong, Doug and Chris Bracey, Jim Rome and The Jungle, Frank Nelson, Chuck Rerick, Mike Yobbe, Gerry Andersen, Henderson & Jwayad, Mike Ferderer, and "Hot" Rod Stults.

And last, but the most, my family. when Donna, Megan, or Carina couldn't go, they made it easy on me leaving my home for a race. Do you suppose they are having fun while I'm gone?? hmm? I love them, and thier support is un-matched.

And thank you, Larry. A chance to post these kind of things makes it nice to thank the ones that help.

Here's to a great 1999.

HIGH PERFORMANCE ENGINES of Burnaby, BC have done some great work on our B-1 cylinder heads and even purchased some special tools to help prepare them to the highest standards. Many thanks to everyone at "Hi-Po", especially Dave and Bud Childs.

MOPAC AUTO SUPPLY have gone out of their way time after time to provide the deepest discounts possible and the quickest delivery on some of the "exotic" parts we needed. Special thanks to John and Rick Duda and Jay Syvertsen.

In closing, let me express my sincere thanks to Larry Pfister, who has helped us immeasurably in building the NORTHERN THUNDER website and has gone out of his way time after time to promote our efforts.

Hi Larry You are providing an essential service for motorsport people. It is nice to come and visit your site and see what is new.

Are you going to do any web pages like you did for me before? If so, how much would it cost?

Thanks: Martin

I have sent you a basic price list Martin, unfortunately the old $100 sites are history as I prefer to really get into doing decent sites with as many bells & whistles (that load quick) as you can afford. Basic sites by me start at about $500 Canadian plus your costs of hosting it, domain name registration, etc.

Thanks for stopping by often and hopefully we can get together on something. LP

Ah yes, my old SFU pal. Thank you! Sorenson has ordered one too. Currently I am awaiting the late update to EditDV, that I hear has started to ship again. Looks like Xmas may be wishful thinking, but once I get that software I will go at it hard and heavy. In related technogeek news a Japanese company just released a FireWire PC card for Powerbooks yesterday. The final piece of the puzzle just has just maybe fallen into place. Ad in the much-talked-about live steaming in this Spring's Quicktime 4 and finally this kid may have that in-house live webcasting system after years of planning....WAIT... this is unreal. You forgot to mention the Northwest's newest member of the T/A set. Steve Federlin qualified at Pomona on his first try, or maybe it was his second as his wife, Patty, had told me they were going to Phoenix. Didn't see him qualify at Phoenix but he was #16 at the Winston Finals. Not bad for his first national meet. He has the ego to do well.

Patty says they have 3 spare engines and have Mr. Shockley doing the tuning on Hyland's old car. He went out in the first round, but just to qualify at that event is an awesome task. Congratulations Steve and Patty.

Bill Evans

I miss LOTS of stuff as I have been out of the local picture for going on six months or so. Pomona in early '99? I would love to, but the NHRA media people still hate me so...LP

That new Seattle date will wind up being a disaster, simply because of the weather. Also the excuse that it was put there so the FM All Stars could make it back in time is a load of crap. Most of those racers use the opportunity to get an out-of-division race in as long as they are on the road.

June is one of the wettest months of the spring. If it rains in Yakima in June, then you know for sure that it is raining a shit load west of the Cascades then. How many times in the last decade did it rain in Yakima on the June date. About 6 or 8 times I think. Why do the cherry farmers spend thousands on rain protective tarps for entire 40 acre tracts of cherry orchards ? Because it always rains in June just before harvest. How many of the last five years of SIR races in June have rain ? ALL of them !

This was not sent to me to be posted, so am placing it here with no name. This racer did not want to face possible retribution from whoever. Sorry, but that's the way some people still feel about expressing their views. I must respect that. LP

From: "arthur cimilluca"
Subject: Ashers Article
Date: Sat, 14 Nov 1998

Nice FU, Larry. I had the same take you did. The most bizzare quote was D. Darnell saying that the NHRA was in "show" business not the "racing" business. Is there any further reason that we are losing ground to our own constituency.

I think this has been obvious for many years. For any racer to think otherwise is wishfull thinking. Of course they are in the entertainment biz, same as MGM is not in the 'Movie" biz, or the NBA is not in the "Basketball" biz. NHRA however is in a near impossible position as the business of drag racing is far more complex than any other fom of entertainment you care to mention.

One of the reasons NASCAR has been so succussfull is that they don't have dozens of forms of racing...a few but nothing like what drag racing has. There are so many factors for NHRA brass to consider, I can't really blame them for concentrating mostly on the upper echelons of the sport. You can look at it two ways: without the pros there would be no sportsman, and without sportsman there would be no pros...obviously.

Without getting into this too deep, realize that even sportsman drag racing is show business. It's supported by fans, sponsors, tracks, and racers. Take any one of those away and they all go. The fans come for entertainment regardless of the class or level of drag racing. No fans, no sponsors. No sponsors no race tracks. No fans, no race tracks....you get the picture. Unfortunately, many sportsman racers could give a damn about the fans, just as many fans could give a damn about the sportsman. That's why few fans go to bracket races, as the entertainment factor for the average joe is nil. Too bad so many sportsman racers who seek out sponsors seem oblivious to this fact and rarely invite their sponsors out to the bracket races that feature empty stands.

Drag racing, due to the particapation costs and the facilities it requires, is entertainment period.

About all I'll ad is that it seems everyone has a different way to solve all the drag racing problems, as there is no lack of ideas. Problem is somebody is going to get left out as there is no way to please every racer from the pros to the weekend warriors. This sport is so much more complex than any other it's scary...very scary. Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998

Larry, As I told you before the 1999 schedule was tentative and subject to change. Due to several issues we have changed the date for the Seattle FMDRS event to June 25-26-27, 1999.

Hopefully this won't cause too many conflicts for our racers and tracks. We also hope this will help with getting more racers to attend the Federal Mogul All-Stars event in Columbus as they will now have a free weekend in front of and behind that race.

Div 6 Banquet/Seminar Info: The "Sponsorship A to Z" Seminar that will be held at the Sea-Tac Marriott on November 21, 1998 at 1 p.m. The sponsorship is free to any racer with a grade point of 3 or more in 1998 or $25 for any NHRA member. (memberships will be sold at the door).

The Division Banquet begins later that evening at 6 p.m. (cocktails), 7 p.m. (dinner) and 8 p.m. with Awards. Tickets for the banquet (including dinner) are $30. Anyone wanting to attend either should call Lori at 360-698-3828 before November 18.

Chris

Thanks for the info Chris. Don't think I'll be able to make it, but from past experience know this can be a very enjoyable evening. I have no information on the seminar, but would be happy to post some if you send me anything. LP

Grrrrrrrrrrrr..... What? I gotta buy your old computer so you'll post the rest of the CHRR thing? Turned you in to our Nitronic editor, Bruce Wheeler, and told him to draft you crazy Canucks to write some stuff for Nitronic.

We'd like that!

Later Jim

Gosh Jimmy, if I had time to do any web stuff for someone else, it would mean I would be completely out of 'real' work. That is a very scary thing to think about. I have managed to pay another months worth or mortages thanks to a couple of great clients ESPECIALLY TCS! Now all I need to do is convince them they need an updated website, and I'll make it through Xmas! Surf over there and help me people! Let 'em know!

You will be thrilled to know that I am trying my darndest to complete the CHRR this weekend. Between sessions in front of the GAOO wishing I (or somebody) was trackside in Pomona this weekend for all the good Div. 6 &7 racers...Why should I even bother to try and set something up if I know I have to shoot from the stands. Heck if they still let Asher in after that article...

As for that Nitronic thing, man I wish, but the time this place requires is getting pretty all-consuming. LP

Very sorry to hear about Max's passing please offer my condolences to the family if you get to the service.

Also tell Bob Behnke he can't retire he drives a Buick and you have to pay attention all the time.

Gerry.

Now there's a thought. Does anybody know who the oldest active drag racer in Div. 6 is? LP

Well Larry its great to see you back up and running. It only took me a month to find "not bad for an old retiree". I am sorry to here about Max. I know I used to really look foreward to those early breakfast times we spent togeather. And at the end of the run a smile and thumbs up if you did your job proper.

Max you may be gone but till we meet again you won't be forgotten in our hearts.

Take care Larry: Bob Behnke

Wonderful to hear from you old buddy! My bike rides down to visit Max & Bob were all to infrequent. But he loved it down there with the deer, the sand trap, and all his freinds who would often stop by for a chat. Boy, will I miss that. LP

Larry, It'll take a week to wipe the smile from my face after I saw the site with Stormfront and all the other great cars on it. I wish I had your energy and talent.

You're most welcome Art. Keep in touch eh! LP

Just a note to let you know that at the last race at Mission this year Randy Johnson locked up the Canadian West Pro Gas Association championship for the second straight year. You can contact Robin Dalgeish at buddy@direct.ca.

You've got a good web site. Enjoy it much.

Subject: The END is nigh !?!

Larry: Is the world (as we know/knew it) coming to an end ??? First, Bill Evans gets his website up and crawling. Second, http://www.missionraceway.com actually exists. (Or at least they promise it will in a few more minutes)

Time to go to work now, (47th day in a row and a bunch more to come), and contemplate the universe and check the alignment of the planets.

Love the CHRR stuff: pictures and text. Sounds like it was quite a trip. How did Denise endure it though ? Or is she immune to all that stuff after living with you this long ?

Bob Wilson

Did you say mrp dot com? I knew it was coming and I heard today was to be the day. I have a big welcoming notice ready (that should get you all interested) so come on back real soon wontcha? As for Denise here's the story: When I met her she used to invite me over on Sunday morning so we could watch the races together...That kinda sold me on her and it's just been getting better ever since. (PS Bob...she also said it was ok for me to go down under with you next year...)LP
