Bob Shapel Memorial Pages 1 2 3 Back to HH

The local drag racing community lost a wonderful member on February 25, 2003. Bob Shapel was a drag racing enthusiast, supporter, driver, and crew member. Though his driving career came to an abrupt end a few years ago after a wild accident at Bremerton, he continued to crew with the Mercedes Shoppe Team of Puyallup. He was a fixture in the pit of Randy Parker's Funny Cars and Kim Parker's Dragsters. A long time friend of Kim's father Steve Flansburg, Bob will always be a part of their team.

Known far and wide as 'Snap on Bob' because of his job with that company, his funeral was attended by fellow workers from not only Snap On but those of other such companies as well.

These pages are but a brief memory of a wonderful human being. At any time please feel free to e-mail a message, photo, whatever you like. As with all our other memorial pages this will be here as long as HH is online. Thanks to the Kim and Randy Parker, Steve Flansburg and Glen Tower for helping with putting this memorial together. As well the photographers whose images are here: Rich Carlson, Lloyd Thomas, & Roger Pedersen.

My friend Bob Shapel
I met Bob as a crewmember for Randy and Kim Parker in the Mercedes Shoppe pit. Immediately, we became friends. He was easy to talk to and did not pretend to be someone other than who he really was. Bob cared about his friends and his family. It was no surprise to see the great number of people who paid their respects to his life at the memorial service held on February 29. In drag racing lingo, Bob is a person who "had all of his candles lit." The glow from his love for life and people shone brightly. His life is an example that we all could exemplify.

I am proud to say that I met the man. He was the kind of guy you couldn't ever forget. He made us laugh when he was alive, and now I know I'll chuckle when I think of SOB. Who'da thunk those three letters would give you the warm and fuzzies.
