08/28/00 Current work load is ugly so am spreading myself around as best I can. One item I must post now is that our friend John Evans tow rig blew up this weekend, and it's a mighty big bill to repair it. He may be out for the rest of the season. If you know anyone looking for some trailer work, check out his G&M Trailer site. They build some neat stuff, and right now would be a perfect time to get a couple more orders.

08/27/00

midnight update Extended periods of drag racing magic are few. I experienced one today and, I'm sorry to all you dragster fiends out there, but it was a door thing. The outcome was about as perfect for what has become the hottest one-on-one competition in all of northwest drag raing, as one could have ever planned.

If Murray and Braid went on tour they could charge whatever they wanted and people would pay to see it. It's a drag racing marketing possibility not seen in this region since the glory days of Gary Beck. For as good as the Pro Mod show was this past weekend at Mission Raceway Park, a few local street legal guys laid the quick down at MRP this day to totally overshadow any other one instance of drag racing as we saw over the past four days from Yakima WA to Mission BC. It has been a season which has seen Braid dominate early, then Murray come on very strong recently. Today was the perfect ending

Dal Sangha's 5oh. 8.72/160

EIGHTPOINT SEVEN TWO.

ONE SIXTY IN A TOTALLY STREETABLENOTHCBACK He hammered out straight up an eighty four, five and ninety five. All well over a buck and a half.

Will try to be first EVER...maybe anywhere DOT-treaded injected late model to run eight's....

Posthma refuses to touch it until it runs single digits. EXCLUSIVE HH VIDEO HERE!

NIGHTFIRE CHAMP FAILS TO QUALIFY Glen Kerunsky was not part of the paid show Sunday at Mission Raceway, as you needed consistent thirties to party here this weekend. Rowe ran mid thirties all weekend before losing to Torkelson in anti-climatic 'ugly' final.

I made a lot of new friends in Yakima this weekend. Alot. A wonderful little drag strip, that I much enjoyed visiting for the first time ever. It's a true piece of Americana. Being from the coast, the desert strips of Div. 6 have an alure for me. A big reason I so love Firebird....speaking of which the new surface recieved plenty of positive conversation this weekend in Yakima.

Thanks to so many people who helped make this weekend a safe, fun and profitable one. Fourth race in a row we sell out the HH99 tapes. Thanks for the support. A flood of mailings for us tomorrow, so if you've mailed in you should have it by the end of this week or sooner.

It's getting late, so here it is:

The HH Hilight of the weekend. Brad vs. Murray for the CPSA Championship of the year 2000. One of the greatest door car drag races of all time. nochit.

plus a sequence of Terrible Tom in his 427 TBolt coming so close to his personal quest for the nines.

It's in Real Hiband format. A TON of still pics to hopefully come soon for the analog crew.

The Swann Bros. fueler was here. Made two good squirts, one with the wheels up high.

Is Cavar the best Super driver in the division today?

The amazing Stan Hawes. That was cool.

Could Fuller's Mustang be a next step in Pro Street? or would it be too much?

Goatheads

Steve, Jeff, Julie and the whole darn crew over there at the J&S Pit at Yakima. Flogged my tapes to death, thanks folks.

Yakima question of the weekend: "Did you experience problems with run scheduling?" If so, please send a possible solution to the problem you had.

Overheard Friday night as he towed by the Div. 6 crew at the top end. "Be ready... if it's me and Bucky tomorrow night, I'm not lifting. I'll be blowin' past you guys". -a certain Firebird driver

Henkelman's low et run Friday night at Renegade was stunning. An off-the-throttle, left-bank-dead-at-1200ft 5.518/254.76. A deep 40 for sure. Maybe best run of 2000 in division thus far. Flames were HUGE.

Details:

Braid wins CPSA 2000 Crown with victory over Murray as they present us with the first ever side-by-side in the seven sixties.

It was beautiful.

Braid won with a .488/7.630/182.88 to Murray's.464/ 7.685/181!!!!!

Earlier in the day Murray ran back-to-back 6ohs.

So who is the man? Murray is still quickest. Glen won the title. The exact opposite situation as last yer.....hmmm we seem to have parity here. Best part is neither of 'em had any major breakage. In fact there was little breakage at all in either camp. A truibute as we see a huge assembly of drag racing talent involved here.

And to complete this magical weekend a marketing first. An ad for before the event, after the event. CLICK HERE FOR AN HH FIRST "If we could do a drag ad". Your samples in real or quicktime format MOST welcome! SEND HERE.

10:pm update An amazing four days. Simply amazing. As I sit here at 10pm I understand the Yakima results are next to impossible to come by online. Main reason was due to 'Federal-Mogul' Gary tossing a modem board in his laptop, but have no fear HH is here. I will sit up until I drop this evening posting weekend info from here on. For starters here are the Yakima FM results, with much more to follow:

FMD Mark Hentges over Kim Parker
FMFC Russ parker over Dan McGlone
COMP Brian Hyerstay over Clint Sallee
SUPER STOCK Terry Anderson over Gary Rouse
STOCK Stan Hawes over Mary Ann Method
SUPER COMP John Preston over Scott Bacon
SUPER GAS Mark Cavar over Marty Peterson
SUPER STREET Marsha Band over Kurt Gross
TOP COMP Dennis Fuller over Rod Langley
SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE Miles Hauer over Leeland King
SUPER PRO John Schwaller over Lauren Davis
JUNIOR DRAGSTER Karen Rizzoli over Nick Madden-Henderson

Today at MRP I didn't get any sheets, but from memory saw Vicki Strell win the track Super Pro title, Al Omond the Bike, and Michael Peck in Junior. Sorry nothing else, but we have track and association sites for all that huh...

Oh ya.... the CPSA Pro Street was something to see. I'm gonna make you wait till late tonite for that one. It was freeking unbelieveable!

Stay up late with me won't you.....

One last thing, my email seems all jammed up, I can't get any incoming. should be fixed tomorrow. More cumin' tonite!

HH Drivers lay down a SUPER SUNDAY at MRP!
There were a bunch of Horsepower Heaven Video Team members who won on Sunday August 19, at Mission Raceway Park. In day one action Mr. Legend Aero himself, Jeff Tucker won Super Comp, while Chad Barclay took the Super Gas title, and Steve Cozakos the Combo crown. In the second part of this double header, Mark Cavar took his Legend Aero dragster to victory over John Evans' G&M Trailer dragster, with Cavar also getting a runner-up finish in Super Gas. Our domination of the popular Stock Super Stock class saw Shawn Kvaas take the win in his Benz Automatic backed Pontiac over the red hot Cozakos in the POS Racing Firebird. In Junior, Michael Peck was back behind the wheel (after little brother Parker's debut earlier) and he took the big win.

HH congratulates all these drivers and thanks the Pacific Northwest Super Comp Association (and especially the Peck family for hosting the fabulous Saturday night barby), the Canada West Pro Gas Association, The Northwest Super Street Association and Mission Raceway Park for helping bigtime in making this the second HH99 video sellout in as many weekends. We'll have some in Yakima next weekend along with some other locations. Check this site for coming details. And again thanks so much to all the friends of HH, who continue to make this a banner year for us! LP

08/25/00

We're being tested for something greater....that's about all I can figure as things around here go from hectic to insane. A planned major site update is off as are my old plans to get to Yakima for the Federal-Mogul...as are a bunch of other things...as more stuff has gone wrong this week than I can remember...Trip plans changed this morning due to vehicle breakage (more later), so I'm outta here now...I do not have the time to transfer files to laptop, so will not be able to update from there....yadday, yadda yadda. This week has been flat unbelieveable. Will be at Mission Sunday unless it rains Saturday....oh sure....See you here next week...I hope.

08/21/00

Here is my official review on HH '99
Freakin' LOVED it!

I got home at about 10:30 Saturday night from Mission and was up until 1:30 watching it. Oh yeah there were many "Oh man I gotta see that again" moments and the rewind button did take a shit kickin. My wife on the other hand can only take TV distortion levels and me continuously saying, "lookit, lookit, lookit" for so long so I think my use of the HH 99 video will now be restricted to bachelor nights. I had a blast watching drag racing that wasn't commentated in a manner similar to television wrestling. You did a kick ass job Larry and anyone who doesn't snap up a copy right away is seriously missing out. I will be picking up some extras for Christmas gifts I am thinking.

Keep it up Larry, you have a winner here!

NEWS FLASH FROM FIREBIRD RACEWAY! Quite possibly the biggest street machine race (in the Pacific Northwest) south of the Canadian border better known as the Street Machine Nationals & Muscle Car Shootout will take place Saturday, August 26th at Boise's Firebird Raceway. A tradition in western Idaho for the past fourteen years, street legal cars will compete in three different "Quick 8" categories in the only "heads-up/no-breakout/pro tree" race for street door cars all season. Headlining the race will be a number of first-rate cars, including former champion Paul Brown with his late model big-inched nitrous Monte Carlo that has run into the 7's and is a former qualifier at the Street Machine Blowout in Florida. Tim Ketlinski won last year's race with a zoomy red Chevy II that should run deep into the low 8's. The 8-second '67 Chevy II of Shane Heintz from Bozeman, MT will be another player, along with cars expected from better than six states. Should you be interested in learning more about the race, contact Firebird at 208 938-8986 or just roll in on Saturday at High Noon for qualifying (Friday night will also offer testing and a Outlaw Street program).

08/19/00 9:30pm Today saw us begin late after an early morning shower out at Mission, then end prematurely at 5pm under more rainy conditions. We got the first round of Super Comp in and that was it. We'll try it again tomorrow. The big PacWest Super Comp barby did go off as planned and was just great. Hopefully we'll have a bunch of results and more for ya Sunday night...probably late. LP

08/18/00 We have replaced last weekend's garbage Quicktime file with two Real files a high band version and a 56k modem one. Click on each link for a much better streaming video experience.

This weekend Mission Raceway features another go round for the 'Super' weekend. You regulars know the drill, and as per their luck the call is for showers...I wish I had the gumption to go around to alllllll the other track's sites to see what they are doing and post it here, but I don't. Would be real nice if they all sent out a brief one paragraph updated notice a day or so before every race weekend just like we were taught back in the typewriter days when we wanted the 'press' to know what we were doing. I did it for years for everything from The Westwood Motorcycle Road Racing Assc. to the Fraser Valley Drag Boat Association. Nowadays I guess they expect the press to do all the work...and you wonder why there is such little coverage.

As for the 'street' piece I posted here a few days back, the feedback was interesting:

HAY I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW WE ARE JUST AS UPSET AS YOU ARE ABOUT THE CANCELLATION OF THE PRO STREET QUICK EIGHT! IT IS NOT ARE FAULTS JUST TO LET YOU KNOW THAT SIR WAS BOUGHT BY NHRA FOR A COMPLETE REBUILD ROCKSTAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER WHO WILL GIVE THE TRACK UP IN SEPTEMBER IS THE PRICK WHO CANCELLED THE EVENT! HIS REASON IS THERE WILL BE TO MANY PRO MODS AND THAY WOULDN'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO RUN THE QUICK EIGHT!

to this from our pal Casey:

As far as the pro street race goes. I think that Dick Ewing has pulled his coin from the SIR pro street series, and has gone over to Bremerton. That would explain the absence of the class at this event. I have not been out to a weekend race this year, but I don't think there is a pro street class period this season. Tell your canuck friends that I am not scared of them!

So who knows...and speaking of street this little diddy came in from our Calgary posting...

Not sure if this is the same one mentioned on your site but it's the only one I know of that's been to the track recently here in Calgary. The car is owned by Dominic Tudda. It's a 1987 Porche 930 Slantnose. It's a factory slantnose not a conversion. It has a 3.3 liter Boxer 6 cyl, 198 CID built by Bob Holcum of MODE Motorsports Design in Pheonix AZ. The engine has a Zytec fuel management system with twin 50 lb injectors and twin spark plugs per cylinder. No nitrous. One massive turbo with variable boost up to 24 lbs. At full boost with C-12 it develops 648 HP at the wheels. In Calgary running at a density altitude of 5200 feet the car had limited traction of 2.2 second 60 foot time and 11.72 ET at 131.89 MPH on street tires. Since the car didn't have a roll bar at the time that was the only quick pass he was able to make. This Friday night, Aug 18, he hopes to crank the boost up and with a set of slicks, clock a 10 second pass. He sent me some dyno sheets and pics also. Check out the size of the aftercooler.
Stephen Scott, Calgary

Neat stuff! Thanks Scott, please keep us posted on the run to the tens.

Orders for the new HH99 video have started to roll in as have some comments. You people are awesome. Thanks so much !

"Here's $20 for the video plus an extra $20 for the cause (your web site). I check it every day in the morning and really enjoy what you're doing with the coverage of our Div. 6 area". -Werner, Seattle

I love your site. It's the first one I go to when I get home from work. I love all classes and go out to Mission and Seattle watching races 15-20 times a year. I would like to get a copy of the new video and could you please send me a list of all the others. I would love it if you could sell me more. Keep up the good work. -Terry, Surrey, B.C.

When I found out the '99 video was done I wrote out the check INSTANTLY! Can't wait to see it. -Michael Beard, Staging Light & IHRA Webmaster

If you could, put my name on one of the HH'99 videos and we can get it from you in Yakima (if your going to be there). Glad to see you getting that done. Maybe you should start now on the HH'00 video. The latest news in the NW for Comp is that Joe Young (former SC racer) bought a comp engine in Seattle and had it in the car for Sonoma but it broke in the burn out. Anyway, he has another motor in the car for Yakima. Hope to see you next weekend!
Nick Jondahl

Yes, I will be in Yakima (unless the great guy whose GL-1 I am currently borrowing wants it back) and will have as many HH99 tapes with me as I can get there.

Sounds like a great deal to me. Keep in touch. -Louis Sweet 'Sweet Thrills' AAFC/AAFA

Larry, how you doin?
Hey I got the tapes. I was supposed to mail you on Saturday night & told Dianne I would but never had a chance. SORRY DIANNE! Anyway, the video of my truck that you sent me, again confirmed that we ran the wrong combination in Mission in June. You wouldn't believe how helpful those tapes are to me. You've seen the results from how the truck ran last year to this year & it is like black & white thanks to the work you've done with that camera. ANYONE OUT THERE WITH ANY DOUBTS ABOUT HOW WELL YOUR SUSPENSION IS WORKING CHECK TO SEE IF LARRY HAS IT ON VIDEO & BUY IT. As far as your HH99 video goes I've only had a chance to get about a third of the way through it. Man you put a lot of work into that. It is GREAT. So upbeat & lots of everything in there for everyone, not to mention the fact of how professional it shows. Awesome job Larry. Hey we missed the record in Calgary by .04 because of the severe cross head wind . We had it up to the 1/8 mile mark but it went for shi? after that.Typical Calgary weather. Oh well there's next year. I hope the rumor is true about Jeff Teuton coming to Mission next spring cause that's what I'll be getting geared up for from here on in. Time to freshen the BARGE from LaFarge & get it ready for next year. Till next time Larry !!!!!!
Randy Hutchings 6006

Larry, just like to say I am watching the video right now and its awesome! I'd say just as good if not better than what you'd see on TNN, and the best part there is no down time for oil downs, just alot of cool cars and good racing, good job! -K. Gryte (1:00am)

In related news this came in:

Larry: Just a short note to let you and your audience know that the RACERS AGAINST DRUGS jacket draw was made on Sunday at the Loafers Old Time Drags, and the winner of the John Force Signature Jacket is Sandi Leland of Coquitlam. The monies received will go directly towards Colouring books, photographs, etc., that are given free when I visit B.C. Elementary Schools. Thanks to everyone, Terry McHardy

The boys from Bruce Oliver racing had a great time at the Loafers meet at Mission on the weekend, the weather was great the track was prepped the people treated us like kings the cars were most excellent. We didn't have the 55 T-BIRD body on. We tried hard to have it ready but to no avail. I wish we could have met you there and gave you some pics of the T-BIRD, you're doing a great job. Need a video where do I buy one out in Calgary. Thanks KEVIN at willougk@cavision.com
p.s. keep up the good work

An Alberta announcement on where to get the HH will be made shortly

EXCLUSIVE SECHELT NEWS
This morning I received a telephone call from Wayne Taylor, President of the Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association. He wanted to follow up on the drag race event they staged last weekend. "We had over 5000 people there. Ran out of parking." He also mentioned there were 138 race cars, 51 of which were from outside the immediate area, from not only the Lower Mainland, but Edmonton, Kelowna, Prince George, Vancouver Island with one coming from Arizona!

This was the second event of the year, the first coming in May and began as a way for the local airport to gain some added income. "We're not trying to compete with the other tracks" he said. "We're only allowed two events a year, and to build a strip up here would cost a fortune."

Hilight of the year was Jack Williams in the Syndicate Scuderia dragster. "Jack said he just rebuilt the motor last week after the accident at Fremont in 1987." Wayne also laughed when he told a tale of Jack calling him up last Friday asking if "He still wanted him there with the car". Of course he said yes, and just about died when Jack said he was already in town! Typical, neat Williams stuff.

Wayne mentioned he will do his best to hunt down a video for HH to post of the Syndicate's run. (He only made one), so keep your fingers crossed.

As you can see I'm getting back into the site more, but have a ton of client videos I'm still behind on, so please bear with me. I will not be able to do any more video editing until my camera is repaired as I don't want to overuse the one I have now. Hope it don't rain this weekend...keep those orders comin' and I'll see many of you tomorrow and Sunday at MRP.

Until then g'nite: LP

08/15/00

Seems a few of the local street legal racers feel the 'Pro Street Shootout' at the Super Chevy Show at Seattle Int. Raceway this coming weekend was canceled because the Canucks have kicked ass there so bad the last few years. Murray won it in '99 and Braid took it on at least one other occasion. Are the NW Yank streeters scared of the Canadians??? Just wondering.

Speaking of street, I got a first hand report from an old friend who visited the local scene this past Saturday evening in Calgary. Some very serious iron included a twin turbo, bottled Porsche 935 built by a local engine guru...and some serious domestic bottled stuff. A few hundred people were on hand, but no major races went down...while he was there. No idea if any of the cars there are strip legal...or if the dudes even care...

Later tonite or tomorrow I'm promised an exclusive look at the the Sunshine Coast Bash from last weekend. Check out Bob Wilson's Northern Thunder News.

Here's a sneak preview:

RON FASSL ROCKETS TO 5.51 NATIONAL MARK AND FUEL ALTERED CROWN, ANSEL HORTON GOES 301 MPH ON FINAL NIGHT OF NIGHTFIRE!

This year's Pepsi Nightfire Nationals was arguably the finest drag racing happening ever staged in the storied 33-year history of Firebird. And that¹s a pretty tall statement when you look back in time and compare it to some of the amazing races that have been conducted over the years in the country side west of Idaho¹s capital city of Boise.

The Idaho Lottery Prime Time Finals saw one record blasting performance after another delivered by a top flight field of Pro Stars as the five-night racing weekend came to a close. In addition, the nationally acclaimed Bracketeers and the multi-night point¹s series finished with four new champions crowned in the Firebird Winner¹s Circle.

Sunday¹s opening round of eliminations featured several challenges for the Pro Modified fraternity. After performing in the best weather conditions during Friday and Saturday nights qualifying heats at 8 pm (in addition to the much cooler 2 pm session on Sat), the first round started at 4:30 pm. With temperatures in the 90¹s and the track heated up to 130+, it made the conditions much more of a challenge for the door car turners.

Kirk Kuhns led the charge out of the box as he delivered a knock out punch to the new ¹68 Cuda of Dennis Radford. A 6.73 at 208.23 in the heat of the afternoon stopped Radford¹s 7.47-146.89. Charles Carpenter then charged to a strong 6.88-204.54 to upset the Fox Hunt champ Danny Rowe who could only manage a 6.95-204.35 in what may have been his maiden first round defeat of the season. John Scialpi then took a narrow win over Vern Mills in a race that looked more like the tango as both sashayed to a 6.91-203.06 and 7.01-180.79 in a hair raising affair.

Randy Haggerty then surprised Richard Cross with a 6.88-203.34 when Cross went to the centerline within the first 150¹ of the concrete pad nearly crossing the stripe before shutting it down. The best race of the round saw Pat Stoken just nip Andy Neyer with a 6.84 and top speed of the round 212.21 (and a .411 light) to hold off a better 6.83-204.03. Then Glen Kerunsky delivered the knockout punch as he stormed to a game 6.81-203.94 to drop the reigning champ Wayne Torkelson Jr. who blew away the hides at the strike of the throttle as the Ford went into incredible tire shake and shut down early.

Round two saw Stoken tear off low e.t. of eliminations at a booming 6.67-215.05 to stop Scialpi¹s early chute 6.95 following a .266 red light. Kerunsky then flew to a 6.71-207.37 to topple his second straight 'King Kong' opponent as Kuhns hurt the motor at the 700' mark after what appeared to be a potential mid-6.6 blast, and coasted to a 7.04 with smoke out of the motor (but no oil). Then the race of Pro Mod eliminations occurred as Hagerty upset Carpenter in a race decided by a few thousands as both cars ran 6.842 in a real mind bender at the top end stripe.

The semi's saw Stoken fly to another stout 6.70-214.69 over the split window's 6.90-201.29, while Kerunsky had his puke tank overflow and spray oil the first 300+ feet, nailing down a 6.76 at only 203.89 while advancing to final by way of the odd 12-car round three bye.

In the final, most expected both cars to possibly dip into the 6.60's as a pair of nitrous cars locked horns for the first time in Nightfire Pro Modified history. Kerunsky was out of the gate first at .471 to a .503 and flew to his first West Coast Pro Mod major event title with a weekend best of 6.68-207.56 against Stoken. Unfortunately the Montana Camaro miscued early in the run with a nitrous backfire and Stoken clicked it early finishing at 7.10-154.34. Congratulations go out to our friends from Alberta!

The U.S. Fuel Altered National Championships blew everyone away Sunday night. The opening round saw Ron Fassl blaze to a 6.00-241.41 to stop Mack McCord who ran 6.28-221.29 before sailing off into the wheat field at the end of the Firebird quarter mile when no chutes deployed. McCord was A-OK, the car a little dusty after reportedly leaving the track at 120+ and keeping it upright for better than two football fields‹an amazing feat in its own right.

Jeff Bennett then charged to a 6.29-227.38 to reach the final when Greg Daebelliehn didn't move when the tree went green, later diagnosed to be a broken cable to the throttle pedal.

In the final, Fassl left a good sized Sunday night crowd stunned. Under almost ideal (for August) conditions the Pepsi Roadster charged to the quickest, yes, QUICKEST FUEL ALTERED RUN IN DRAG RACING HISTORY AT 5.51!!! With corrected air at 5,100' above sea level and temperatures in the mid-70¹s the run was absolutely picture perfect. A top end charge of 261.32 (.951 60' and 3.62-208.33 half track numbers) claimed both ends of the track record and earned the Amos Satterlee tuned monster to their inaugural Fuel Altered crown. Bennett gave it a shot, but the No Mercy Fiat was no challenge for this Roadster finishing at 6.12-236.96 along with a short trip to the top end field after a tangled parachute necessitated the off road excursion.

In the Gold Crown Top Fuel showdown, Jack Harris continued his current hot streak with the beautiful Nitro Thunder Fueler. "The Sheriff" and his Posse reeled off a 6.39-219.19 in the opening round against Mark Malde who ran 6.78-199.42 in the "Birky Bunch" ride. World Champ Jim Murphy in the 'WW2"'digger then disposed of Kirk Kuhns in a good race‹6.44 to a 6.55.

Harris was certainly ready for Murphy in the final. Saving his best for last, Harris stormed to an all-time Firebird quickest at a track record 6.22 and 216.60 mph. At the strike of the throttle Murphy went into instant tire smoke ending his hopes of the Nightfire title after returning to Firebird for the first time in 20 years. Following the race Murphy indicated that they had taken a half percentage out of it with the cooler conditions, but should have dropped it a full 2% when they learned that the air was 1,100' better than the opening round. Murphy said 'WW2' will return in 2001 and try to do one round win better.

In the Silver 4-car Top Fuel field Mike Boyd soloed to the event crown when Butch Blair was unable to return after a beautiful 6.49-204.24 in round one. Boyd reach the final in "Rootbeer Frank" Hedge's Mastercam ride with a 6.55.

Boyd charged hard for the first 300' in the final round, but clicked it off for the event Silver title, saving the powerplant for upcoming races in the weeks to follow.

Jett Field also delivered the knockout punch to topple the aspirations of fellow Idaho Funny Car racer Matt Moreira. After both had split in the first two heats on Friday and Saturday nights, Sunday would be the deciding round. Carding a career quickest at Firebird, "the Idaho Kid" flew to a straight down Broadway 5.96 at 237.02 (.959 60' number) to record the first ever 5-second blast in Nightfire history from an Alcohol Flopper. For Field, it was also his inaugural 'sub-6' at Firebird and the crowd just ate it up. Moreira had troubles right out of the box and coasted to just an 8.88.

One jaw dropper after another left the crowd nearly numb. Saving his best for last, many wondered if the high altitude Firebird facility would yield a 300 mph run. Coming all the way from Ft. Worth, Texas, Ancel Horton delivered the knockout punch heard around the valley at 10:34 pm Sunday night. As the last cars down the track, the Mississippi Madman put his turbine missile on overdrive and literally flew to a 5.42 at 3, yep‹301.20 mph that just about brought the house down.

In the Drag Racing USA magazine Bracketeer Series, four new champions were crowned Sunday night. Not only did Dan Lafferty win the $5,000 Bracketeer title on Sunday evening over Thursday night winner Al Chinn, but he also went around Colorado's Monte Green for the 4-night point's title. The drama was extraordinary due to the fact both Lafferty and Chinn were racing for the overall point¹s crown. If Lafferty won he was champ or if Chinn won, he was champ.

In the dash for the final $5K of the weekend, "Dynamite Dan" lifted a few feet before the finish line and saw his win light come on as Chinn ran .512/11.237 on his 11.24 dial-125.57 handing the win and overall crown to the digger. Lafferty would have been dead-on, slowing up slightly to 8.10 (8.09 dial)-163.73 after a .523 tree. For the drilling specialist, he pocketed better than $7-Grand in cash. Lafferty won overall, while Green¹s Colorado ride was second, Chinn third and Gordie Boven fourth.

Semi¹s went to Mark Kidd and Larry Smith (Vancouver, WA), quarters to Bob Seamons, Jimmy Goodwin, Tim Sigler and Dan Murphy, while eighths went to Sam Northup, Jim Glenn, Monte Green, David Martin, Jeremy McGhee, Mark Barnhart, and Clay Brooks.

In Pro, the title was delivered early to Mark Kidd after back to back victories in the YMC Brogie Roadster. John Keppinger won the specific eliminator Sunday night by knocking off a redlighting Larry Hale for the $1,000 winner¹s prize. Keppinger ran 10.39 (10.40 dial)-131.15 in a very odd final where both drivers sat for almost an eternity, neither not wanting to final stage first. Then after Hale staged and put it on the converter (very early), Keppinger sat for what seemed like an extra long (but permissible by Auto Start standards) period of time before turning the second light on. For Hale, he left the tree red and the track point's leader charged to victory lane.

Semi-money went to reigning track champion Mick Alley at the wheel of his Stock eliminator Camaro, while quarters were collected by Paul Grover and Steve Maneck. Eighths went to Andrew Fischer, Jim Cox, Steven Lambert, Katie O¹Hara and Mark Warmouth.

The Sportsman crown was taken by Jenny Radford and Richard Pedraza won Pro Snow/Bike overall. Individually, Pedraza beat Don Kasel, Radford beat Luke Jacobson and Steve Cox defeated Rod Langley in Consolation.

Larry WAKE UP
Well its late and we just got home. You should have been in Sechelt, what a weekend! The car cruise on Saturday 280 cars and on Sunday I saw it with my own tired eyes... Jack Williams in the Syndicate car push start and all! First was a warm up pass to warm up a car that probably has not started in 10-12 years and then an 1/8 mile pass! Now there is something that will make you sleep well. Dave Wilson's funny car ran well and Dillinger was there going 147 mph in the 1/8 in his front motor car
Have a nice night: Dean

I didn't even know we could have added this one to the list. I have not heard from anywhere else, hopefully somebody has some Woodburn and Ashcroft stuff. Look for the Boise coverage later today. The same people who organize the show and race as well go together on the site, so let them have a couple of hours sleep and I'm sure we'll get all the awesome details shortly.

I must say that I cannot recall another weekend with not only so many drag events, but similar drag events. With the decent numbers at Sechelt, Mission and Firebird it will be interesting to learn how Woodburn, Calgary and Ashcroft did. Are there too many races? I sometimes think so. Do you? LP

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NHRA CANADIAN NATIONAL OPEN
RACE CITY SPEEDWAY, CALGARY, ALB.
SUNDAY, AUGUST 12-13, 2000

SITKO, BATEMAN REPEAT IN CALGARY

CALGARY, Alb. - Capping an intense week of drag racing action in the Alberta province, Steve Sitko and Roger Bateman claimed their second victories in five days.

Both Sitko and Bateman won their respective categories, Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car, at Edmonton Wednesday, then traveled South to Calgary's impressive Race City Speedway for the NHRA Canadian National Open.

Once in Calgary Sitko set low elapsed time in each round of eliminations before gunning down Serge Dion in the final round in a close 6.26-second to 6.33-second duel.

For several seasons Bateman, along with partner Bob Reynolds, have run amok in the Alberta Funny Car wars, however, there is every indication that the Calgary duo's reign may be facing its first serious challenge. Although Bateman again was the class of the field, downing John Evanchuk in the final with a 5.97-second, 240-mph lap, the opposition is closing in. Evanchuk recorded a 6.08 during qualifying Saturday; Kevin Therres' Eat More candy Lumina hit a 6.19, also during time trials; and Ken Kraus recorded back-to-back 6.16s during eliminations Sunday.

Heavy rain clouds that had surrounded the race track all day finally emptied their contents late Sunday afternoon, forcing NHRA and track officials to reluctantly call a halt to the day's activities, leaving many final rounds undecided.

The following are the final qualifying and elimination results from the NHRA Canadian National Open event at Race City Speedway:

9:30pm Update Sorry about that 'streaming' video of last night. Some of you can see it fine, for others it sucks. I will work on a Real version in the next day...or two. What happened was I downloaded the new Real8 stuff and now Media Cleaner EZ won't recognize it. I'll have to go back to Real7 before I can produce any more decent streaming video. Quite obviously the QT4 quality is nowhere near the Real. I suppose if I paid for all those high end codecs QT requires (Sorenson Video for instance) I might get to what Real has NOW... Real8 Producer for instance.

Tell you what. The first company or race team that comes up with the roughly $300 U.S. it will take for me to get it. You will get whatever the heck I can do for you (your choice) in return. I told you I would try their 'full screen' feature and, while not perfect, was pretty damn impressive. Real8 Producer will give me the ability to provide to you full screen WATCHABLE streaming video for you cable and DSL folks. That is a BIG step forward that NOBODY ELSE IN THIS ENTIRE SPORT is currently offering.
Think about it. Make it $500 U.S. and you just got yourself some pretty bleeding edge communication device for your company or race team.

So no video tonight friends, though I must thank a ton of ya.

Once again, in a very background move, Glen Braid saved my ass. Seems one of his sponsor dudes owns a GL-1. Like wow. A HUGE THANK YOU to James for the use of his MiniDV baby. An equally major one goes to Don Murray who also offered his MiniDV Canon. I'm tellin' ya, the second I can get away from tape, I'm gone. The new Hitachi DVD ROM camcorder is extremely interesting, but like too much shit, will not be available in a Mac format at introduction...if ever. DVD camcorders will be sooooo nice. Tape is so fragile, and so slow.

The HH 99 video. Well........what can I say? Thanks first to the people who sold 'em out this weekend at MRP. Thanks to Steve and Dianne Manning for playing the major role in an HH first. For the first time, an HH video was debuted AND available for sale in two provinces simultaneously. I have not yet heard how the weekend was at Race City , but with the knowledge that friends like Randy Hutchings pre-orders a pair sight unseen... Again, to the girls in the Mission souvenir stand who sold both their own reserved copies as well ah "my sisters". She said that there was this guy there from Arizona who wanted one so bad. That kinda business relationship is priceless... To Bob Wilson, who despite the fact it didn't have enuf of those long skinny things, gave it a very cool review over on Northern Thunder to HH99. His best line to me was something like, (as he held the Canon Optura I sold him last winter) "You used THIS THING for that?"...How 'bout them Loafs huh? NOBODY puts on a better race than this veteran Langley club...The Alberta Funny Car guys...wow. I wish I could spend a couple of hours with a full cooler and these people. Their show was all about smoke...and baby, did these guys provide...The Pro Mods. Keith Korecki's Shelby, Trevor Lowe in that nine year old mini shoe box running some of his best numbers ever...Glen May. Flew to a .44 on Saturday, blew it up, but was back on Sunday in his lowered, chipped 'cranberry' red Lightening. That's just a guy who loves this stuff...cool....Phil Ruskowski. backing up his 200mph pass in that 350 dragster and electing to "take it back home, pull it apart, and see what the differences are from before the nitro". Victoria B.C. has produced many British Columbia motorsprt heroes. You can ad Phil Ruskowski to a list than includes people like Grant King and many more. Ya, he's that good... ROCK ON Xibutionists!...God Damn, George Swann took his fueler for a hit today! For those of us who have seen this man calmly go thru years of work, then today to witness him lay down a great burnout, followed by a killer launch on about 75% huffing out the pipes of that 392....

That is what I consider the heart of this website. That's Heaven baby. Swann's fueler was Horsepower Heaven. That's what you think about if you ever wonder how the name HH came to be.

Firebird at night can do that. Seattle did many years ago.

Firebird. As I write this they are oh... about semis in the nitro classes...oh maaaaaaaaaaaaaan.

Now it's on to a bunch of new projects, another attempt to catch up on client videos, and a copy bonanza for HH99. Will do my best to attempt 'every nite' updates this week. Mission up next, gotta LOT of Super customers to take care of. My first ever trip to Yakima the weekend after next.

It's a huge, busy portion of the season. HH'll take care of ya...trust me. LP

Yesterday at Mission Raceway. Mere minutes short of 'same day', HH delivers the web video goods with a five minute piece featuring highlights from action at the Langley Loafers B.C. Oldtime Drags at Mission on Saturday August 12th. Please note the garbage Quicktime version has been replaced with two Real files a high band version and a 56k modem one.

08/11/00 HH EXCLUSIVE: The minister responsible for ICBC (Joy Macphail) will announce on Sunday 13 of August that the collector plate program is to be expanded to include pre 49 modified vehicles. The announcement will take place at the Chev Cruise-in @ Kinsmen Gorge Park in Victoria at about 11:30 am.

Shaking News From MRP. Ya, so I'm always the last to find out...seems this weekend's Loafers Oldies will include a doorslammer race. Should be good too as I assume Don Murray will show, Braid's boyz are turning up the wick fer sure, the TCS Baretta has some new found power, and a bunch of other guys may well see October-like track conditions tomorrow and Sunday. With the number of orders coming in for the video, I may be sold out the first run tomorrow...which would trash any idea of going to Ashcroft as the main reason was to try and make some money there...we'll see.

Hey, just before you go flying...check this out.

Seattle Times Outlines Future Seattle Int. Raceway Plans Reverse the track??? LINK HERE -Thanks JC!

Thanks to the ever vigilant 'Triple W' we have breaking news of Ron Houneit defending his Sturgis Top Fuel Championship! AWESOME! KILLER! Nobody's gotta ask who the man is any more...PS he'll be running Mission Sept. 9/10.

http://www.americandragbike.com/news/latebreaking/default.asp?id=111

The Haney rider flat wasted 'em at the Gran Daddy of all drag bike races. The 1/8th mile event attracted all the heavy hitters as Houneit ran the only .40 in round one (4.417/161.87), he had nearly a tenth on everyone as the next closest number in the opening stanza was a 4.50. In round two he stunned 'em with the event's first .30 (4.377/165.40 low ET of the event I believe) as the next closest was still in the 50s! In the final he ran a 4.383/160.18! A spectacular performance! Congratulations Ron!

Cruisin' news includes word from the Langley Goodtimes Cruise In (Sept. 9) that pre-registration is a must. That is of course unless you love those long lineups like they had last year. Security will be stepped up this year, so don't expect to show up whenever and park wherever. From here on we'll be posting breaking news on this giant event regularly and if you want even more goto the official site HERE. (It's also on our Links page). Yesterday we finalized plans to have the official HH booth at the event. We'll have all kinds of cool stuff for sale. During the early portion of the cruise you'll be able to stop by, tell me where your car is parked, and I will make sure it's on the official event video! Cool eh?

OFFICIAL LOAFERS SITE (Click on Mission for details)

Remember that Loafers Rule at MRP this weekend, action starts 9am, gates at 7am both days, the pit gates open at 4pm today for parking. The big Eagle nite race featuring Jet Cars gets going at4pm for qualifying, racing at 8pm, gates open at noon. Sunday is a non points bracket bash. And out at Calgary the National Open is at Race City, and those darn Nightfire Nats are in Boise., and the annual Hot Rod Nationals go off at Woodburn. What a weekend of drag racing! While I have not heard who the feature cars will be at Mission, I am wondering if a certain AA/FD slingshot may well make it's first passes...stay tuned.

PS: Veteran Mission starter Steve Manning and his loverly wiffy Diane will be at Race City. He will have a VERY limited number of HH99 videos with him available for sale. Get to him early as they defiantly won't last long. Thanks much to them for ferrying some out. Which reminds me, none made it to Boise due to the unbelievable courier cost. We'll mail them some next week. Now for those wondering with Manning not at MRP we understand 'Honest' Al The racer's pal will be filling in. Red lights, a pair...only kidding.

Our plans are to go out to Mission early tomorrow, and unless all the tapes sell..... go to Eagle mid afternoon, returning to MRP before noon Sunday. If you want a tape, and are not going to either of those events, we made our first delivery of a bunch to Cruisers Restaurant in Langley yesterday.

A major update over at the way cool NW Street Racing site

BATEMAN, SITKO CLAIM EDMONTON TITLES

EDMONTON, Alb. - Kicking off six days of drag racing action in Edmonton and Calgary, Roger Bateman and Steve Sitko claimed victories at Budweiser Motorsports Park in Edmonton, Alb., Wednesday evening.

With darkness creeping up on the track, and a raging lightning storm in the distance, Bateman claimed the Federal-Mogul Funny Car title over John Evanchuk. Despite tucking the Bateman-Reynolds Firebird up against the right guardwall the veteran driver held on the claim the holeshot victory in a 6.44-second to 6.42-second duel.

Bateman had paced the Funny Car field with a 6.08-second lap, the quickest run of the event by almost two-tenths of a second.

After qualifying on the pole position with a 6.23-second run, Sitko rumbled downtrack to uncontested laps of 17- and 16-seconds before tangling with Bill Edwards Jr. in the final. Sitko overcame Edwards' quicker start and took the win with a 6.28-second run, defeating Edwards' 6.54-second lap.

Hi Larry
Well here we are in the West Edmonton Mall. Found this site in the local Chapters and thought I would send you a update of our little Canadian National Open tour.

Prince George was a great time and is a great track to race and be at. Martin Rachal, my traveling buddy, won King of the Hill on Sat. Sunday Martin semi finaled. Sat I went out second round, but on Sunday I took out my Jimmy first round, then missed the light second round and trailered myself again.

On to Edmonton where we found lots of dust as the pits are not paved. Also, this is the first track I have ever raced at where they charge for kids under 12 years of age, this is pure greed and I was not impressed that Martin had to pay another $20 for each of his children. Was doing real well in time trails 501 to 505 lights for six time trials then broke out first round 11.08 dial ran 11.050. Damn racing... o' well... Martin made the Semi finals but could not come up with the number.

From here we're on to Calgary. Motor home so far has licked up $600 worth the gas... thank goodness it was sponsored .

Bob Behnke

Thanks Bob, we got a check-in phone call from Rich Carlson this morning who said Sitko won Edmonton. He has been traveling with Phil Elliott and all he could say was "I forgot how much he snores". Lucky dude is on his way to Boise, while Phil handles the Race City Open this weekend. I'll be sending Rich some videos, so hopefully the Idaho crowd likes 'em... LP

08/09/00 1:30am ATTENTION STEVE MILLER...your video is ready, please send your mailing address.

Now for those of you who can't remember that far back, Stevie was the guy who won some kind of contest I staged here (it's been so long I forget). His prize would be the (certified) first ever copy of the Horsepower Heaven '99 video...

Yes that does deserve a pause or two, for it was seventeen months ago that I began video taping drag races for this tape. Now, after twenty straight days and nights of video editing hell, it's done, and in my humble opinion instantly makes every other video I have ever produced over the past ten years unwatchable. I could go on and tell you all kinds of cute little stories, but rest assured this is by far the best work I have ever done. Rest even more assured that if I don't sell a bunch in a hurry you won't want to know the outcome...

At this point in time, I am NOT going to be able to make it to Boise this weekend. (Yes I'm sick that I won't be there, but am too burned up to really realize it) I will however be working overtime to hopefully have copies of the tape at the Nightfire Nationals for sale. Check at the souvenir booth. The weekend will not be a total loss by any means. Plans are to have videos at the BC Oldtime Drags at Mission Saturday morning then a quick blast up to Ashcroft to flog some there while taking in their big Night Drags. Then I'll try to get back to MRP Sunday to see the finals. I will also try to get some tapes to Alberta for the NHRA National Open at Race City in Calgary this Saturday/Sunday.

But starting RIGHT NOW, they are available for sale. If you have never supported this site in the past, now is your chance. The tapes are $20 U.S. or $25 Canadian, including all shipping charges and taxes. The video is two hours long, has CD quality sound and I will be p[posting complete details here soon. I will also be getting back into this site.

Please make your cheque or money order out to:

and send it to:

The only other horror story is that my GL-1 camcorder broke down a week ago and I have no idea when the people in Calgary can repair it and get it back to me. Thanks to some amazing friends I have a 'temporary' replacement, but I just hope I get my piece back very soon, as without it I'm lost.

Ok, it's nearly 2am, I began this final day of editing oh about 18 hours ago...just like I did for the last too many nights.

Now it's up to you guys. I'm sorry it's late, but in traditional HH fashion, it's worth the wait. This thing freekin' rocks!

Thank you. zzzzzzzzzzzz LP

I'll have a major HH site update sometime tomorrow

08/07/00 Once again Div Sixers dominate the sportsman classes of a west coast NHRA National Event. Although we only had one winner (Jody Lang in Stock) at the FramAutolite Nationals in Sonoma, Ca., the Runner-ups were many including: Gary Ormsby Jr. in Mike Johnson's FMD in his first race after taking over from Dale Carlson. In Comp Jeff Lane was ru, while in Super Stock Terry Sherrill made it to the final. The all D6 brother act in Stock saw Jody Lang win over Toby, and Mike Henderson made it to the money run in Super Comp. Finally, John Peterson was runner-up in Super Gas.

Unfortunately I have no results (or a place to find them) for the NHRA Northwest Division Six Bracket Nationals at North Central in Prince George, while the bike drags race in Ashcroft at the Eagle Motorplex race results should be posted soon on the CMDRA site.

Meanwhile out at Mission Raceway the streeters were battling the heat on Saturday. Don Murray was the guy to beat with Braid suffering a broken valve on his first burnout on Saturday. Don would like to than his new sponsor INTRINSIC SOFTWARE or their support. Check the CPSA site for results.

Another slow week around here as I thrash to complete a big video project, and don't forget if you are going to Boise and have a little space, I need a ride!...BAD LP

Larry, thanks for the great site! It would be great if you could get some response from the site viewers about the six Sportsman Motorcycles that ran for the Nats. We would really like to know how much the fans liked it. I for one, as one of those motorcycle riders, am very greatful for the opportunity. Thanks Chris!
