02/29/00 7:30pm Extremely, intensely, "I'm gonna kill something" bad news on the video front. The HH99 tape, due to more reasons than I care to bore you with, will not be completed this weekend. It has come to the point where I will not mention it again until it is complete, so please don't even ask about it. I don't know when it will be finished, but it will be sometime before the next leap year. Please believe me when I tell you I am WAY more upset about this than any ten of you combined could ever be, as missing this major selling point will cause bigtime financial strain on an already tight budget. Hopefully I'll find out how many friends I really have once this thing is done.

Got a great piece of feedback on KING TV's 'Dangerous Dragsters' from last night:

Larry, I saw the big 'Dangerous Dragsters' expose on KING, and was completely unimpressed. I had pretty high expectations of the show, as the racing in Seattle a few years back was really pretty good. I have fond memories of some of the serious big-tire Pro-Street folks out running, whereas all I saw on the TV was some stock Civics and SUV's doing burnout's into oncoming traffic. Additionally, they did a great bit about a 'retired street racer' who was encouraging the cops to shut down streets to prevent the racing, while at the same time is running a website which seems to be encouraging the evil act. In the end, the fine folks at KING come to no real conclusion. I expected to hear a bunch about the Import and Street Legal series at SIR, but there was little to no mention of it. This is why investigative journalism is inherently evil.

7:00am Big update over on the Vancouver Motorsport Show 2000 page.

02/28/00 9:00am Work progresses on the HH99 Drag Video. Man I knew this thing was gonna be good, but it's coming out even better! We are on schedule for a debut this weekend at the Vancouver Motorsport Show and because of that updates here will be a little slim this week. Then again we plan on doing a bunch of show updates all week long, as this IS the big one, and from some of the 'insider' info only HH has, we'll perk you up in an effort to make sure you come to what is shaping up to be the best local show in years. Stay tuned . LP

02/27/00 9:00pm Got a call from Carlson tonight, already on his way back to the hotel so he can get up early tomorrow to cruise pawn shops. Man that guy is getting old and boring....thank God! He told me the Jacksons were about as calm as he had ever seen them, and said as he was staging in the final Jeff waved to him! Rich almost crapped himself thinking he wasn't paying attention to the race. WrongOh! Ferd has Larry Morgan's former Pro Stocker and didn't think it was working all that good...also very mellow was Walt Austin. After his bypass surgery I would hope so...and what was that about one of 'our' winners wondering why there is no (like Winston) 'Federal-Mogul Girl'...OK Kent, how 'bout it? And of the blue 'photo' vests NHRA photogs have to wear this year, he was approached three times in the pits this weekend by spectators. Once to sell them a program, and twice for peanuts! Knowing Carlson he probably sold them something! Tim Marshall did mention that the deep pockets were nice...though I can't imagine Timmy ever having deep pockets.

Lots of talk among the lens dudes regarding those new 'uniforms'......did NHRA really not have them laundered after Pomona? Who has to wear them and who doesn't...the new NASCAR journalist crap, and too much more I don't dare mention here. Thanks very much to Rich for checking in and supplying us with some good scoop.

Tomorrow night at 11pm, KING TV is featuring a special report called 'Dangerous Dragsters' featuring import street racing in and around Seattle.

I understand our friend Mr. Wilson is having the time of his life with all the new junk he's gotten recently. I will soon be able to relate as in a short time we will be moving to beautiful Walnut Grove...you know the place that does NOT have DSL coverage! I said to my wife the day I got this rocket ship hookup, that it would be the signal our house would sell and we would find a new place where the fast lines don't exist yet...Most of you will probably rejoice however as in the past few days I have actually had a minute to see how slow this site really is on both a 28.8 and 56k connection....ooooooo scary Larry.

Hey Larry.....Time to celebrate for those Div.6 racers who kicked ass in Phoenix....wow what a great way to start a new season!!! The Land of the Leaders!!! We all should be proud of those guys and gals who travel all that way to just get back on the track...the winter seems toooo damn long here in the northwest!! What a way to end the first round on Speedvision and then get My Classic Car on the tube and showing the Langley Goodtimes Cruise-in. It was good PR for that city, for this years event!! It was a nice day of television/websites to get the best news and information!! GREAT JOB as usual Larry!! Two weeks left for first Test&Tune at Mission!! Yahoo!!
-Vickster

"How 'bout them Hoosiers man. Those things WORK...they're BITCHIN!" -FMD champ Rick Santos

Update on "THUNDER IN THE DESERT" - Club Drags at Eagle Motorplex, April 22 & 23, 2000.
So far we have almost 50 cars registered. There have been some questions on eligibility by some avid drag racers who don't belong to an "official" car club. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM! If you don't belong to a club, but want to take part in this annual event, we will put you into the "Eagle Motorplex Club". There will also be NO minimum number of entries per club, only a maximum of 150 cars for total entries, so don't miss out. If racers want to do only Time Only runs without actually competing, that's OK also. The ONLY stipulation is that you MUST register yourself and your car by the end of March. This way we can see how to facilitate your needs. The registration fee for the weekend is $50 Cdn or $35 US. We will have racing fuel at the track, but we will organize that aspect at the beginning of April.

To register, contact Gunther Gottgetreu, at e-mail: turbo6@home.com

This event is organized by the Grand National Racing Association (GNRA), and all entry fees should be sent to:
GNRA 1701 - 1235 Quayside Drive,
New Westminster, BC
V3M 6J5

For telephone questions, phone Paul Russell at (604)882-8720 after 7pm.

02/25/00 1:00pm Thanks to Darren over at NWStreetRacing.com we have now posted the 2000 Import Only drag schedule for the Northwest. You can click on the link to the lower left or HERE.

10:00 am Major news from the Glen Braid camp as today team Might Mouse officially announces the signing of a major new sponsor. Whats4Free is a dot com company based in Scottsdale Arizona. Yesterday, Glen Braid met with CEO Jan Oliver (as well as getting him on the airwaves over at ROCK 101) and finalized the deal. This is VERY big and will have a major effect on not only the local baddest street machine wars, but possibly beyond... Stay tuned as HH will soon enter into discussions with the team on a new website....and more. Your next step will be to visit http://www.whats4free.com to see what that amazing new company is all about. PS...if you dabble in the stock market, this could be a hot ticket...

Our man in Phoenix, Rich Carlson, is about ready to dawn his new 'blue suite' and will be with us next weekend when we will be able to snag a ton of what will surely be killer pics from the 16th annual NHRA Checker Shucks Kragen Nationals. As usual our coverage will be heavily weighted on the sportsman side of things, but we understand Mr. C will also be shooting the pros.

There is a major update over at John Evans Racing site, with some car info and a pdf of their just released newsletter...which includes never-before-seen images of the devastating accident the team suffered last year.

New input from you:

Hello!! I started a New more secure SS Forum. Go to www.superstockers.cjb.net   Thxs: Dale

Check it out troops

Just want to say I love your web-site. As a guy who is just getting a pro car ready I have been checking your site alot. See you where the action is. (my car is a 69 GTX that used to be owned by Larry the auto-sports guy) Its gonna be a lot slower for now, but its been over 20 years since I looked at the business end of a tree...so maybe that's for the better...anyways cyu at the tracks.  Rob

Nice to see a bracket guy sending in some new car info....obviously none of the others care about their sponsors enuf to bother.

Larry, we have just broke out of the mold our 55 T-bird body, so we've got some work to have the body ready. We run with the I.B.A.A. in the northwest with our blown alcohol funny car. I emailed you earlier about looking for a nostalgia body for the car. We bought the mold for the Bird in the states and now have the body just out of the mold. I'll send pics when we are done. Thanks for the help earlier in looking for a body. Bruce Oliver Racing Marshall  Sask. Canada.

Send them pics Bruce...love to see it!

FIRE BURNOUT FEEDBACK:

Larry- fire burnouts are one of the reasons I got hooked in this thing we call drag racing. My years may be a little off, but I think it was '72, at the now defunct Puyallup Raceway Park. I was in the Jr High, and my brother Tom, who swears he is a drag race natural (never been down the strip) took me. Herm Petersen, in the Petersen and Fitz Justice Brothers Special lit it up for the first and only fireburnout I had ever seen. It was un-freaking-REAL! It was late in the year, and in the program, Herm had an ad for his car and himself available for displays. Well, already a drag junkie, the wheels started rolling. I ran for boys club president, won the election, and begged he advisor to let me spend the money (a whopping $50.00)to bring Herm to our school gym in the spring for an assembly. That's where my sales career started I am sure, as he agreed, and we had the most kick ass/boys only assembly with Herm, fresh of his Gatornationals win. I was a hero amongst the guys for weeks. Also, I do believe it was the same Puyallup show, there was a wheelstander or 2. a great trivia question, and people can date their race careers like I have, name one of the wheelstander drivers, and the uniqueness of his ride. He is still involved in racing today, and I won't mention he spun it into the guard rail that night. Thanks for stirring a great flashback... Tory Lea

Tory??? A salesman??? Since when? As for the wheelie guy question, the floor is open...

Bill Phillips at Boundary Bay on a Saturday night. He used gasoline for another one of the "Wild Man's" shows. I was there and saw one of the true "originals" at work. Bill Evans

Yes, the Madman would 'light 'em up' anyplace he could. Check out a couple on this page.

I have done fire burnouts in Spokane, Saskatoon and Prince George, but the last one was at Edmonton International Speedway. We did this a 7 am on a Sunday morning (I think it was August) in 1978 for the movie fast company. Sorry the picture is blurry, the only photo I have is from the newspaper. Notice the large cameras strapped on the car, pointing forward and back.
Ken Sitko Sitko Family Racing Edmonton, Alberta

OK, here's the challenge ladies and gentleman. Send us the most obscure, different fire burnout pic you have in that old scrapbook and HH will gladly start our very own FIREBURNOUT PAGE! Send HERE.

DragList.com continues its "Drag Racing Story of the Day" with classic bench racing memories by beloved and legendary fuel crewchief "Big Gene" Townley. Gene recalls the wild days of hanging out with Fuel Dragster shoe John Mulligan. Click on the link from our home page to read the story.

Hello Larry, Chris Evens here, very impressed! Just thought I would drop you a line and let you know that I will be racing again in 2000, and would like it if you could video tape me and my car. Also if you could put me on an E-mail list of all current things going on in the drag racing scene. Thanks Chris

Hi Larry, how goes the battle? I just set up a little www of my own and I want to know if it is ok with you if I link your site to mine? Mine is at www.kruzers.homestead.com Thanx, Barry Watson.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2/23/00, Los Angeles, CA--As a tease for an upcoming CD release, "The Big Sounds of the Drags 2001," Nitronic Research has unveiled an internet first: In-car audio from the cockpit of a grunting, cackling, fire-breathing Top Fuel Dragster. If you sport a Real Player and a 56k modem, you can dial in this verite snapshot of what it is like to blast down the 1/4 mile in a modern fueler. Simply point your browser to: http://www.nitronic.com/topfueldiary/tossedbelt.html and ride along with "Techno Tim" Gibson as he guides the Bill Miller Engineering fueler down Parker Avenue at the recent 2000 Winternationals, out California way.

And last, but certainly not least is a few pics of the Crusiers party courtesy the Vickster:

Just part of the crowd...

The HH Nats heats up in round one...

The champ Jimmy Behnke (left) and White Wall Willie with their 'Tree-Cokes'.

Billy 'Grapevine' Evans goes head-to-head with the Vickster. He advanced to round two with Behnke.

Absolute star of the auction was Jim Sibley (Head about to hit hanging lamp).

Complete detals and more photos HERE

More to come later today...including Fireburnouts...Cruiser's Party Pics...and more. LP

02/21/00 11:30pm So without fanfare...little more than a ripple in the pond, Horsepower Heaven begins an ambitious season of video updates. Going where no other drag site has gone before...

Why not sit back, relax and CLICK HERE for our RealVideo visit with Bob MacDonald and friends as they gather in beautiful downtown Langley, B.C. to see his new race car...That's right, within 48 hours you get to not only see, but view video of what we did this weekend...part of it anyway. Complete from viewing video to posting this page was about two hours. Quicker processor, and some more planning shows potential of a 30 minute show each weekend taking about four to six hours...So that's the plan. By 6pm Monday we should be able to see a well edited 'show' after each weekend. Stored here for 'on demand' future viewing. 'Nite of the event' postings are maybe possible with just one person and one deck (camcorder), but I dunno.

11:00 am Say HI to Austin Blair...

...and yes, that is a certified roll bar...

And since we're on a photo update, I had to include this one from deep within the mountains of Maple Ridge. It's said to be a 'Beaumont Lawn Ornament'. Wonder what the neighbours will say?

02/20/00 1:00 pm
Larry, Thought I would drop you a note to let you know that we had 73 dinner tickets sold which raised $1,022.00 for Eagle Motorplex which did not include the funds raised from the bar tickets sold or the auction.
I would like to thank everyone for helping set up the Fund Raiser for Eagle Motorplex. There are a lot of people behind the scenes who are not recognized for their help and I do not wish to miss anyone. Thank you for your promotion on your site and I believe everyone had a great time!
Irene Jones

Yes, while it's impossible to thank every individual who made a contribution, one of 'em is the writer above. Thanks much to Irene who was one of the major behind-the-scenes people for this one.

10:00 am ...and in case you didn't already know, Div. 6 Director Chris Blair and his wife Heather are now beaming parents to a bounding baby boy. Complete 'results' are on The Grapevine. This is the first time in many, many years that a sitting DD has been in this wonderful position. Congratulations to these two fine folk and welcome new son Austin!

midnight Jimmy Behnke KIKSAZZ! & WINS HH '99 TreeNats!

Takes out track owner in dramatic FINAL! REALVIDEO HERE NOW!

EXCLUSIVE HH coverage of the greatest Practice Tree laddered event in the history of the world!!!! 1999 BRACKET DRIVER OF THE YEAR TAKES OUT the white ONE- Triple W in opening stanza. Willie had WANTED the man in round one... Next round Bill 'Grapevine' Evans fell before the Behnke assault. Big block street/strip dude Greg MacKenzie mde it a couple before he too watched JIM walk away...In the final it was the Behnkster over the guy who 'brought the track' Don. Good deal. Lotsa people, killer prizes. Larry didn't have to drive home. Thank's for the ride Terry & Dan! It was an awesome group of local standouts. THE people were here. All of 'em. I heard business, I heard a LOT of laughter, and I saw a bunch of people come away from this enlightened.

Frankly. There weren't that many of us...just shy of 100 maybe?? Regardless, this was announced as the second annual Eagle Fund Raiser. Prizes were awesome, and the auction made a star of one Jim Sibley, though I'm not sure he actually ever ended up with anything. Or maybe that time he was bidding against himself...

From the impassioned late nite speech from Darlene Evans of DRAW...to my meeting a name I had long respected, but never met...Mike Pople. This was without a doubt a nite to remember. So many neat people got up to say something. One guy who really stood out was Glen May. Ya' know what Ashcroft? I think you guys just flat got THE MAN in Ford door cars...uh now trucks, at your beck'n call. The baddest man in Ford doordom was...is here. wow

An ya know wha I wanna see in 2000? How 'bout the two Glens at the Plex...n Joe too if he's ready...THE CHALLENGE? The worlds BADDEST drag truck. Run whatcha brung...just gotta be a truck. Could you imagine Fanning's nitro deal against Glen May...& Kerunsky...and?????? Lets RACE. Let's see it ONLY at Ashcroft...and let's see the final in AUGUST.......under the lights!

The First ever World Drag Truck Challenge.

jusdoit

and one last question.

When and where was the last fire burnout you eversaw ...On a dragstrip? The search is on for the last ever legit...legal fireburnout. SEND YOUR ENTRY HERE.

GL1 was awesome. First shoot since I got it weeks ago. Gonna take some getting used to. Much different characteristics than Optura. This is definitely a better camera, but it's gonna take a little practice to prove it.

Man there was decent turnout of fun people out this day! Heard of the Mid-Valley burnout contest that was going on about 5pm at a shop lot in Langley...wonder where that was? Heard of a certain 409 dude on a vavle-floating mission from hell!

MUCH more coming tomorrow. LP

02/19/00 4:30pm Bob MacDonald had a bunch of friends over to his Hot Rods by Bob shop this afternoon for the unveiling and startup of his unbelieveable new 32 five window. Much more on this one real soon...

8:30am As I type this I can imagine multitudes of new racecars being loaded on trailers all over the lower mainland in preparation of that first big test...NHRA certification, but..It will be of interest to see if anyone shows up. I can recall back a half dozen or so years ago when you could actually go to this deal and see a bunch of new and revamped rides. Not so in the recent past, as the past two years have not seen enough cars to count on one hand. In a year that has already seen an unprecedented ZERO Canuck racers at the Winternationals, it should be interesting. Then again, mainly due to weather, the snowbird drag racers have been passing on Pomona in favor of the sunny climes of Phoenix, and that National Event.

In video news, we are still awaiting the arrival of our music, but a surprising number of 1999 customers have contacted us with, thankfully, favorable comments on their late tapes. Here are a couple:

Larry, I received my tape today, and your right it's almost a year. Regardless of how long, my suspicions are confirmed as in almost every run the car ........... Place my order for next year, hope we get some good footage of the new car. Thanks DD

Arrived today Larry and looks good. Now the problem is that I keep rewinding the final round against Jody Lang and the results are always the same. I keep hoping that I will win. O well. See you in Mission. Bob

Thanks Larry, got the video yesterday. Man that truck's suspension is out to whack. You really made my winter when I got that video. There's nothing like seeing it. Its tough sometimes trying to figure things out with just the time slip & what somebody is telling you from watching, cause unless you look at the slow-mo then you can't really see everything. Its just happening too quick. That's it for now. Thanks again. [Mission bound for the record] Randy Hutchings

Wow! Got it today. I thought it was a 10 second clip but it was a ton of great footage. It turns out that the footage has been instrumental in solving a rear end design problem for us. DS

As you can see, I don't call these things 'the $50 HH tuneup' for nothing. If not a tuneup, then anything from a nice souvenir to a sponsorship proposal...Father or Mother's Day gift...LOTS of uses here. Also be aware that I keep most every tape master on files, so an extra copy or two is just a small job. Please remember that the one, single way all you racers (especially you FMDRS people) can support this site is to have me tape your car at the races. At this time I can say that I will definitely be at all the FMDRS events in Div. 6...and I'm taking reservations as of right now. I still have a few small details to work out, but rest assured by Boise, I'll be ready.

As for other stuff:

NITRONIC RESEARCH "AA/FD LIST" UPDATE: "RANDY RANCE" McDANIEL TO SHOE CHAMPION SPEED SHOP DIGGER! MASTERCAM AA/FD STILL COY ABOUT THEIR NEW HIRE... by Cole Coonce, NR Mojo Wire
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2/16/00, Los Angeles, CA--Silly Season is finally over in the South City section of San Francisco. Champion Speed Shop, the #5 seed on the Nitronic Research AA/Fuel Dragster List, have finally announced a replacement for their self-exiled cockpit cowboy, "Swingin' Sammy" Hale, aka "Sammy the Crank." His replacement is Rance McDaniel, a venerable nitro-huffing journeyman from Fresno, CA. Although he has shoed a variety of Chevy-powered fuelers in the past, among the notable being the "Valley Fever" entries in the mid 1970s, this will be McDaniel's first go round with a volatile small block Bowtie at his feet in the fore position of the cockpit, coursing and percolating with the fickle nectar of nitromethane... McDaniel has earned plaudits from the drag strip cognoscenti during his "Senior's Tour", capturing Top Fuel Eliminator at the NHRA's Winston Finals in 1993, and subsequently shoeing the same Dan Olson-tuned dragster to runner-up of '94 Winternationals.

Hello all: In my zest and zeal to get you my new address, I was premature. I put an apostrophe in the address which is/was disallowed. A few of you who have already tried the address either knew that or had your mail returned... Sorry for any inconvenience. Anyway, here is the CORRECT address: flyinphil32@earthlink.net Phil Elliott

WOW...a slice of division 6 history seeing Kenny Dodgion in here. a mere shadow of himself, lookin all the world like a fishin guy. nice to see the car still winning races throughout the northwest with Rod Stults at the helm. whether Ken, his wife Nancy, Gordy Nishimoto, the resurging Pat Brooks, or Rod behind the wheel, that car always will make its way to the final round. It's also nice to hear that Brooks is off his can, building another car. great job, Larry, as usual....any winter time trivia/id the person/car contests? and Kenny, say hi to Nancy, and get your butts to the races!!! Tory Lea

I wanted to say thanks to Rich Carlson, just received a call from DRUSA who say they will feature my Cuda in the near future. The next time I see you, the beers are on me. To clear up some rumors, I'm not getting out of drag racing. In fact I'm stepping up to a new level. I am close to completing my new shop and started construction on a turbo fwd drag car. Like it or not these are the next big thing to hit the strip. Thought I might as well jump on board early and get my feet wet. I'll bring the Cuda out to a few of the bigger races but on a very limited schedule.Hey Heida super stock still sounds fun, have you found me 300 cfm yet. I'm still building the best throttle stops around . Greg Henderson.

Hi Larry, just thought I would update you on the progress of Larry Foster's Merc H/T. I just took these pics today and thought you might be interested. Keep up the good site. Barry Watson. ps. I know customs are in the minority on your site but I won't hold that against you.

No problem Barry...I LOVE customs...just wish I could get to more shows. LP

Larry....Bill Kraus is visiting here tonight...as we will be at the Cruiser's Dinner tomorrow night....hope to see you there. Wanted to let you know that Dave Stobbe is going into the hospital shortly...soon..don't know the exact date...but if anyone would like to send a get-well card they can send it to: Dave Stobbe 701 Gleneagles Drive Kamloops, B.C. V2E 1J6

Well a bunch of fun news followed by a bit o' the down stuff. Hopefully everything goes well for Dave and as for the Ashcroft party...IT'S TONITE...BE THERE...just be there. Cruisers Langley 6pm to ?????? Pictures here tomorrow! Thanks again for your input folks, you MAKE this place! LP

02/17/00 Way too much stuff is happening around here right now. The house thing...some other stuff, and a bunch of motorsport items, though I must begin with an HH99 drag tape update.

There is good news and bad news. Bad news is the delay in completing production. Good news is, the major reason for the delay. About five or so years ago I hooked up with a local rocker named Lance Reegan Diehl. He composed a few tunes that were used on a number of HH tapes back then with great success. We both sort of split after that, and just recently got back together....thanks to the Internet. As you read this a CD is being shipped here from...Korea. ya, that's where Lance is now playing, recording and producing. I just received a .wav sample this morning and needless to say, LRD ROCKS! Over the past couple of years I have tried buyout music from many of the leading companies in the biz. Much of that music has shown up on everything from a major television program to porno movies. With the addition of original music of this quality, HH99 will be that much better than anything previous. I know you're all sick of hearing it, but those who know me well know I rarely do something unless I can do it 'right'. HH99 is now on track to debut at the Vancouver Motorsport Show March 3,4,5 where it will be available at a special 'show special' price. Unfortunately it will not make the Red Deer show next weekend, but there was simply no choice. It's been quite a past couple of months around here with a number of big things happening behind the scenes. It's all going to come together very soon, with a major announcement possible as early as this weekend.

Wish I had to time to do more just now, but hopefully tomorrow.

So in the meantime please check out LRD's site that features some of his great music. CLICK HERE.

02/15/00 Hi Larry, Check out the article in today's Seattle-Pi on why Seattle doesn't have a Winston Cup Race. Nothing we haven't heard before but noteworthy nonetheless. JC

A bunch of new info and show previews for the 2000 Vancouver Motorsport Show are now posted HERE. (or click on the link at left). We expect to have much more come in over the next few days as we all gear up for the biggest show of the season.

You are looking at an image that shows the future of drag racing video. Tonite...uh I mean tomorrow morning...well... just an hour or so ago, the baddest computer dude on Earth (Steve Jobs) announced the new Apple Powerbook codename 'Pismo'. This is it...(and despite what those Sony ads say about their Firewire laptop) it is the first 'honest' portable video studio ever made. As you can probably tell I'm pumped! If everything comes together you can all get a look at a system identical to the one pictured here at the first Div. 6 FMDRS April 14/16 at Firebird Raceway, where this webmaster plans on introducing to drag racing a multimedia experience unlike anything that has ever been seen and heard before.

And if you don't believe me check THIS.
"What we were going to produce (with the Platypus workshops) were people who were visual journalists who could really work within the form of the classic photo essay, except now it would be called a video essay. This is different from a documentary or normal television news in that itıs not a collaborative effort. It is the story, vision of one journalist, shot by the journalist, researched by the journalist, scripted by the journalist, scratched by the journalist. The idea is to deliver a package to our consumer with the least possible hassle." Dirck Halstead

It's been five long years since I first spouted off on HH about Firewire...digital video...drag racing coverage and all that. This time it's for real. LP

02/14/00 Update 6pm: Bill Evans responds...at the bottom of today's posting...just below the Pomona posting.

Update 5pm: The new HH Div. 6 tentative Schedule page and Track Listing is now HERE. Speaking of schedules, I am working on a new concept that hopefully will be an easy way for locals to find out what is happening in a clear, concise and easy-to-view-and-print format. It's coming so hang in there.

I'm not usually in the business of giving out free advertising, but when I find a good deal I don't mind passing it along. If you use an inkjet printer and are disgusted at the prices of namebrand ink or pissed at those near useless refills, check out this place in Washington state. I have tried the no-name Epson ink and cannot tell the difference...and it's TONS cheaper. And please, if you order something tell them where you heard about this. http://www.lasersharp-imaging.com/ink/inkjet.html

Update 1pm: Happy smootch day eh...As I sit here to begin another week of fun, an obvious first batter in the seven day HH rotation is a reminder that two of the first major drag racing events for the Greater Vancouver area are coming this Saturday, Feb. 19.

Plan on this being a full day of fun, BS, whining, and partying starting with the annual Mission Raceway combo chassis inspection (9am to noon) and racer meeting (noon???). I will probably not be in attendance for long, as I have been invited to a private engine startup party for maybe the bitchinist car debut of the season. (That we will be featuring here Sunday, along with all the other stuff happening this day). Then a bit later at 6pm, the big Eagle Motorplex Fund Raising Bash at Cruisers Pit Stop Diner in Langley begins with a cocktail hour/benchrace session at 6:00 p.m...as well as time trials for the second HORSEPOWER HEAVEN PRACTICE TREE NATIONALS!!! But first some info:

You must purchase the (7:30 p.m.) $25 buffet/draw tickets to be eligible for the HHPT Nats...you can't just pull in, kick everyone's butt, and go home with a cool prize and major bragging rights. Five dollars from every ticket sold will go back into a cash draw that night and some of the door prizes are AWESOME! From MOPAC comes a complete G-Tech Meter so all you street guys can see how slow...uh, I mean how quick, your streeter really is, and from our pal Tom The Tire Guy is a set of Honda Mags!!! Woohoo, neat stuff, and that's just part of it! You'll have to be there to see what HH will present to the winners of the Nats...so make your plans RIGHT NOW! I mean NOW!....the Cruisers staff would be much appreciated if you booked in advance as it's a buffet, and it's best to know how many may show up, so thery have enough food on hand....give 'em a break CALL NOW (604) 533-7223.

Frankly if you miss this you will definitely be sorry. It's all in an effort to support the little dragstrip we all know and love, The NL'AKAPXM Eagle Motorplex. You may be a racer who can't maybe make it up there as often as you wish, so here's your one big chance to give 'em a hand. We all know they need it!

As for what's come in lately, how 'bout we begin with these comments and contributions from Speedzone Magazine's Dean Murdoch, who originally sent us in some rather 'tame' material, so I asked for some images with a little ...uh...'edge'...

That's Grave Digger in a stance I think all decent blown and injected vehicles should be in whenever an HH camera-type is around...then there is what we'll call the 'unofficial' HH Welcome Race Fans posterboy...only on this site baby....only on HH do 'our' promotions staff have 'testicular fortitude' like this! Thanks Dean...who continues with stuff from this past weekend's FMDRS in Houston:

Just a quick not to say that Dale Carlson's reign as the second quickest blown Dragster in the class, lasted one week as Jay Meyer ran a 5.443 to best the Giant team's Pomona numbers by 3/1000ths. (4.446) Damn it! OAlso notable is that heavy hitter Vern Moats did not qualify, Winnipeg's Kevin Richardson was #9 there At a 6.20. He got Tuning help 2 1/2 years ago from Bob Hafner Leo Grocock And Paul Terasenko.
Results from Australia final drag bike race are in. Bill Furr won. Warren Hill lost in second round. Finished in the top Six over all I think. Weird rules though they made it sound like Bill Furr was named grand champion, even though he won one race to Jim MacLures' two wins. Bill was not even in the top eight in points going into the final at Adelaide. He lost in the First round at the first two races. MacLure was like 140 points ahead. The race organizers points mentality, reminds me of their gov. stupidity on the Houniet deal. He will probably get accepted into Australia now that the event is over.
Dean

And from the HH dept. of Strip News comes all this:

As it stands right now, four of the six FMDRS tracks are undergoing major expansion and improvement projects. The exceptions are Mission (which is in fine shape) and Seattle (no comment).

HH has also learned that the rumored Federal-Mogul revamp may just get bigger not smaller in coming yearS. It seems that although they may appear to be cutting back in some areas in 2000, they are already looking much further down the road at some very good looking programs. Yes, read that as more $$$. Cool.

And how about this little piece that recently made it's way into the HH mailbox regarding the Winternationals:

Isn't it the goal of of the competitor to make it to Sunday, and the final two to three rounds of competition in front of the largest crowds of the event?... Are the sportsman competitors really being treated any better? Out of 128 competitors (S/C & S/G), 64 are going home on Friday, and 48 are going home on Saturday. This leaves eight competitors in these categories for Sunday. These competitors really liked it when they did rounds two & three on Sat., and finished on Sun. It gave them a greater opportunity to show off their sponsorships, their pride and joy in their equipment, and a chance for their family to be a part of their weekend. Would you spend the money to go to a four day National event with the chance that you could be done by Friday?... Is this the first step in the loss of sportsman racing at national events?...Is all of this being done in the name of TV and marketing?...and are they are doing it with out divulging any information until after the fact to the competitors?... Could this have a negative effect on racers sponsorships of 'nationally' sponsored cars? It can't help. Exposure to the largest denominator is the key, and the sportsman competitor will get short changed one more time. If there are only 32 sportsman competitors on site that are actually competing, the fans are going to wonder what happened to all of the cars at the "countrys' best car show". This is also very important to get spectators to the track on Sunday. Notice how full the stands weren't on the TV show Sunday? Lots of seats doing poor imitations of spectators. Looked only about half full. Guess they will have to raise entry fees some more. BTW, did you notice how they were keeping the camera angle below theose half full grandstands seats while panning down track?

Some rather interesting comments, many of which I must agree with. There has long been the idea that if the little guys can't be in the show Sunday, it's not worth much to them to pay those kind of dollars to enter. There are arguments both ways however, and I'm certain this should bring in some more thoughts...LP

A response:

Yeah Larry, and did you notice how the stands filled up when the cars that fall on their faces run? Must be all those sponsors and fans. Sorry gang but I just don't buy it. The pros bring the people, not us. When we can fill the stands at divisionals constantly, then we have an argument. Until then, we have to make some sacrifices to promote the sport we love.
Bill(beat me up at Cruisers)Evans

PS: Bill has some neat stuff regarding NHRA and Canadian TV up on The Grapevine.

02/12/00 A few days to all but finish up the 1999 customer videos, so it's time for another substantial update here on the ole' Double H ranch. I must say going into last season, I did not set out to produce many of these, but stuff happens and here we are half way thru February...All I can say is I WILL be planning for customer videos not only at all of the Div. 6 FMDRS events in 2000, but some of the other major events as well as some Mission and Ashcroft races....and yes, I hope to do even more at that wonderful place called Firebird. Complete details will be posted here in the coming weeks. LP

A dynomite drag bike report (with info and pics on some local guys) from Oz, courtesy our pal at Dragster Australia John Baremans is right HERE.

Good comments from my ole' buddy in Oregon:

Larry, First of all, I agree with everything Bob Strain said. There are efforts underway to try and put something similar (although less formal) to the CPSA program for PIR this year. I've seen the CPSA rules and think they did an excellent job putting it all together...I'd like to make the trek up there to see an event this year as the cars up there appear to be way faster than what we have right now. We only have a handful of 9 second cars at our Street Legal events.

The key to this whole thing is that "street racers" want to race HEADS UP when they go to the track or when they go out to race illegally. One of our tracks constantly tries to persuade racers at the Street Legal events to dial-in their cars and race in "bogie" competitions. They come on the PA and try to encourage people to come out on Sunday and race in their bracket program...etc. They just don't get it! The games associated with bracket racing are boring to the street racer. If they come out at all on Sunday they will most likely run in the "test" lane (which is always run heads up!!!)

One last thing, to really have an impact on illegal street racing, there needs to be a place to run EVERY Friday and Saturday night. Our two tracks here in northwest Oregon both have about 6 Friday night "street legal" events each year. (keep in mind I haven't seen schedules for the 2000 season) To my knowledge there have been zero payouts, awards, etc. The events are very uncomplicated as they only break down the classes by "street tire" or "slicks" so there are no ladders or whatever (they should be easy to run) I'm no accountant, but I can't understand why they don't open their gates more often! I understand there are insurance costs, crew-members to pay etc. But with concessions, entrance for racers and their friends it seems like it would still be profitable. A real effort to curb street racing is going to have to have more than 6 nights of racing per year.

Hey Larry, After trying to get you to do it I finally did it myself. I have created a website called "The Digs" for all types of drag racing. The address is http://thedigs.8m.com so go check it out and maybe throw a little BS on the message board. Enjoy, Owen

Love that email address Owen!

Larry, You hear former MRP bracket driver, Dave Janse getting interviewed on the Pomona webcast after he tuned driver Kenny Sayers to a first round win in F/C?  He's even mentioned in the Fastnews Sunday wrap-up.  Another impressive outing for Mr. Janse as nitro crew chief! J.C. Clerf

And how about this!?!

Larry,
I want you to know what a great service you are providing Northwest motor sports fans and competitors alike. I have been following your site from the beginning and enjoy it a lot. You probably don't recognize my name as I retired from Drag Racing a little over 10 years ago so I have sent photos to possibly refresh your memory. I think Phil and Rich may remember me also. Now that I have retired from the Boeing Co I will have some time to help my good friend Pat Brooks with a new stock eliminator car he is building. Keep up the good work LP.
Regards, Ken Dodgion

Of course I recognize your name Ken. Nice to hear from you, and look forward to seeing you haul yourself off that golf course and get back to the drags! Now to prove I remember you, here's one from me...mid 70s or so.

And speaking of sportsman stuff, don't forget to check out the results of this weekend's Houston FMDRS over on Nathan Varney's SportsmanReport.com site.

02/08/00 A good read is an article entitled BLOWUP, in the March 2000 edition of Car & Driver. It's a look at some past nitrous controversies in NHRA Pro Stock racing, mainly involving Jerry Eckmann.

A plethora of news and views continues to pour in. If it's this busy around here now, imagine July. We lead off today with these street racing comments from the President of the Canadian Pro Street Association Bob Strain:

After reading your posting on 02/05/00 (see below), I felt the urge to comment.
I agree that certain people will continue to race on the street regardless of whatever format MRP or any of the other tracks provide, as this type of illegal activity will always attract a certain segment of our society. I do believe that providing a decent format WILL attract a percentage of the "street racers" away from the street and into organized competition, as has happened with myself. I spent many years out there running 10's in street legal trim and watched many others running even quicker, this type of racing was exciting yet extremely dangerous. I think I shared a common attitude with many street racers, one of disenchantment with "bracket racing" and how it works. The street was the only place that offered me "heads-up" competition, although as my car became faster and more dangerous I hit the streets less often. With the advent of "street legal" drag racing I became involved as early as possible and although still in its infancy, this forum holds lots of promise. The average street racer can now attend the track and feel a little less threatened and inexperienced, hopefully he/she gets bit by the "bug" like the rest of us and makes the decision to become involved in an organization like the CPSA and "do it legal" like us. This format is as you noted very lucrative for MRP as all winnings are raised by the CPSA and its participants, I think the reason the stands fill is not necessarily the fact that the street folk have more "friends", I just think that heads up racing is that much more EXCITING! (sorry bracket guys...). For the record, I still cruise the streets regularly. I rarely exceed the speed limit. The difference today is I get my "fix" at the track.
Bob Strain

It may just be me, or that this site allows more communication, but I still feel that ever since this kind of racing started at MRP, the street action has definitely increased. Other than that I agree with everything Bob has to say, and think him for taking the time to send them to us in a clear and honest manner. It is this kind of forum that may hopefully do some small thing to put illegal street racing in a less favorable light than the safe kind...at the strip. Though I fear it may just all be in vain. LP

Now this...

Larry, Larry, Larry, when are you going to learn that the Header Flames guys have inhaled too much nitro over the years. I think that subconsciously they believe every car out there is a nitro car. Mark Hentges is a very smart guy and I doubt that he would make another 1/4 $mil. mistake unless he had the name of Bushey, Hopewell, or the Automman on the side of his car as an A/Fuel Crew Chief. Jerry 'The King' was more like a jester 1 1/2 yrs. ago when he tried to get Mark to run in A/Fuel. Maybe Larry, you are a top secret covert top secret Canuck HF reporter that too has smelled to many nitro fumes. Every one should be allowed one mistake though.

Great new look for Bucky, too bad he didn't run that well. Congrat's to Carlson & Johnson Team, Those three 5.40 passes make them only the second blown team to run consecutive .40 passes I believe. The other, Santos obviously. It also make them the 2nd quickest blown car out there. Or as Santos said three years ago when they where up against Stark at the World Finals ( Stark ran that unbelievable 5.40 at 270mph at that race), they are the B-main winner (at the time Santos was over a 10th and a half behind). It's fitting to say that now Dale and company are the B-main winners. One other note, TF Harley rider, Warren Hill advanced to the semis in the land of Oz on the weekend. Ran a career best 7.04 in qualifying before losing to event winner Jim Maclure in the semis. That's it for now.
Dean Murdoch, SpeedZone Magazine

Geez, was I that obvious. I guess I'll need a new overcoat Mr. Coonce... LP

As for this next piece, I would like it know that HH considers it a 'guest editorial' more than a news item. I discussed it with Gunther this morning by phone and he feels it necessary to let readers know his version of why the MRP club drag event was cancelled. His club is one of the largest and most active in local drag circles, and a longtime supporter of both tracks. I honestly believe the club will continue this tradition, regardless of the situation described below, which is not meant to be a MRP vs Eagle thing...really. LP

CLUB DRAGS CANCELLED AT MRP FOR THE YEAR 2000 !!
After last year's foul up, Mission management has solved all future problems associated with this event by its cancellation. When I contacted a club official about this event cancellation, I was told that MRP's "Street Legal" drags will replace the Club Drags weekend. It was also mentioned that because of the "Thunder in the Desert" Club Weekend on April 22/23 (co-hosted by the Grand National Racing Association and Eagle Motorplex) at Ashcroft, MRP felt that they would no longer have to hold their own event of this nature in September.
There are two problems associated with MRP's way of thinking on this issue. First of all, the success of "Thunder in the Desert" has not been proven due to its early schedule, and second, the car count at MRP's "Street Legal" drags is simply mind boggling - resulting in long delays in tech and very few time trials (just like last year). I was also told me that car clubs can challenge each other at these "Street Legal" events, but I know that we'll never have all the clubs at one of these events at the same time. Logistically it would be just too difficult, and the car count would be even higher, resulting in even longer delays (deja vue?).
We, the Grand National Racing Association and Eagle Motorplex, sincerely hope that all car clubs in the Pacific Northwest and BC Interior come out to play at our inaugural "Thunder in the Desert" Club Drags. We have limited the car count to 150, ensuring that everyone will get lots of runs. This will be the ONLY time this year when ALL the clubs can be at one event at the same time. We must have preregistration by clubs before March 15th. Phone Paul Russell at (604)882-8720 or e-mail me at turbo6@home.com.

02/07/00 The latest news from Bill Kraus, Assistant Track Manager of the Eagle Motorplex is now posted HERE.

Update 8:00pm Larry, You forgot Division 6 racer Mark Cavar who went to finals of Super Comp. Bob...Oops, sorry to Mark and all the Super Compers out there in Leader Land. I do believe this is Mark's best result at this level. Congratulations Mark and crew!

And a major thank you goes out to a guy whose fabulous work has appeared in some of the biggest drag racing publications out there, Joel Gelfand, for sending us these two killer Pomona images:

Bucky Austin & Jay Payne in Round One CLICK HERE for full size version

The Dunn/Hoffmann 1000ft flameshow! CLICK HERE for full size version

Joel's contribution is a major bonus for HH visitors, hopefully the Covina California photographer will be able to do more with HH in the future. LP

02/06/00 Update 9:30pm You have to hand it to Compton, the deal did get done in what had to be record time...didn't manage to catch all the race on webcast, but I must admit I missed hearing our own Stevie Wong, as he is usually the only guy there who knows the D6 racers, and knowledge of that kind of thing can make or break the audio coverage for us unbiased folk...In an unexpected development we got an offer from a noted drag racing lensman who hopefully will send HH some exclusive Pomona pics. We greatly look forward to that. Hopefully it will come to pass very soon.

Congratulations to both Stock finalists, 1999 Div. 6 & World Champ Don Little who won over Toby Lang today. Kudos also to the runner-up FMD Giant Bicycle Team and driver Dale Carlson who ran fantastic all weekend, especially in the final against the awesome Rick Santos. Just imagine those two on a cool late afternoon at Mission in May........Gawd I wish. As for my report of Hentges on nitro, I guess that will teach me to get my info from a website eh? Which reminds me, best line of the day has to go to Frey for one that went something like: "Don't believe anything you read on the web". Thanks Bob, we'll remember that.

Grapevine update includes latest winner of Sask Drag Lotto along with chassis cert dates in Alberta.

Last but not least, I actually did something today and updated the HH Video page that has been long overdue as it is consistently one of the most hit on pages we have around here. This also reminds me, that once this video stuff all gets done, next project will be a revamping of the site. Have some very cool ideas, and for a demo of how cool drag sites are getting, check out the new IHRA splash page (Requires Shockwave Plugin Get it HERE). Works best with quick hookups, and gives you an idea of the kind of thing I would like to see here soon. While it may not be for everybody yet, this is the future.

Got a report on last nite's Monster Truck Show at BC Place. Probably the best such event ever in Vancouver, the big crowd got to see a bunch of hilights including the Digger on it's lid, a pair of Monster Patrol wheelies, one of which was so high he tore the tailgate off, a bunch of motocross dudes from the Vernon area in a big jumpoff that saw one of 'em faceplant bigtime suffering a concussion and an overnite stay in the hospital, but the big scene of the night was a (rather hairy) streaker who managed to make it nearly all the way down the course, straight-arming one goon on his ass before being taken down heavily. The smell of illegal substances was said to be everywhere, with the cops and security doing nothing. All-in-all a fun nite in the dome.

Tank goodness for the web. Tis time troops. Time ta crank up dose 40watt Yamaha YSTs, and da 80watt woffpuppy, and slide on down to the webcast of the first real drag race of da next towsand years. Lets Rock! HERE. That would be 10am Pacific time for the always super exciting (especially in audio only format.....barf) opening ceremonies with elims at 11.

Once again Header Flames proves to be THE place to go to find out what's really happening out at the Fairplex. The comments regarding both the race and the television snafu are downright perfect in most cases. I suggest Compton should lock his door tomorrow morning, hold all calls and surf this forum. From the infamous comments of the pissed photogs, to the upset fans because of incompetent ticket sellers, along with the wonderful television comments to the plain and simple insider news and views, this place is quite simply the best.

Speaking of the NHRA television coverage and all the complaints about too much talk and not enuf action, I give you this. When Speedvision came to Canada not too long ago, the bible of the venue, TV GUIDE printed short reviews on all the new channels. Their comment on SV was about as mainstream as you can get: "In the two hours viewed we saw mostly talking heads and parked cars". Seems this problem is not just one for drag racing, but a PROBLEM none of these overpaid producer idiots can seem to figure out. You have to make the sport look thrilling before the drivers can be heroes. Period. You can't do it the other way around or you are doomed. Besides there are so few heroes out there who have the balls to speak their mind, whatever they say is usually gonna come across as boring to the hard-core fan and really boring to the mainstream viewer. And last but not least, the four to six camera shot of a four second run sucks. It does nothing to make the cars look fast (always a problem on the small screen). Use all that extra overpriced junk for the replays.

Mail call:

I race at Lewistown Raceway in Lewistown Montana, I cant get a straight answer from anyone regarding class breaks, I run pro class, 12:00 to 14:00 according to the book, were at 4100 ft., according to the operators they allow .50 adjustment, my car runs 12:40 but I seem to always draw a 11:20 car in the first round, what is the Div. 6 rules on this, Ive got a hundred different answers, but none make sense, I feel they are allowing sandbaging, let me know your opinion please.
Thanks ,C652

I can't help with this one. Anybody else?

Hi Larry
I'm Dale Hynes, the automotive instructor and drag team sponsor teacher at Kelly Road Secondary in Prince George.
I enjoyed your editorial today. I would like to know if I can print a copy to quote in a meeting coming up on the 9th. It seems that the drag strip here may only last another, mainly because it is not attracting racer, fans etc. Your wish list speaks what I think, that kids today are driving fwd vehicle and that these should be promoted. Something not done up here much to detriment of the track.
As the sponsor teacher of our drag team I would hate to see us park our cars because there is no place to race that we could afford to get to several times a month.
If you have any good ideas about programs etc that can make a track attractive to spectators and racers and ultimately keep this place open, let me know.
I was wondering if you could set up a page promoting highschool drag racing?

There is a high school site, but it is not up and running yet. I think that more people should know about the high-school program, and if they do, and see the benefit to the sport it is, there may be more support for it. That is why I asked about putting some information on your site about the program, not to make another site devoted to high school racing.
Our drag team page is at, http://www.geocities.com/~Timbrook/KRSS.html It is a bit out of date because I'm waiting to move the page to our school site this month where it will be redone.

Here are three pictures. Two of the cars and one of the team logo, the Road Runner Drag Bird. Both cars were built by the team from the ground up. The Camaro is a 350/350 combination. If we ever get some real slicks it will run in the high twelve's to low thirteen's. Right now it runs 13.3 to 13.5 depending on how well the burnout goes. The Honda will make it's maiden voyage in it's modified form this spring. The team did a four inch top chop and turbocharged the engine over the past year. Im hoping it makes it into the 14 second range. It should be fun to see!

Great stuff Dale and crew! I know the difficulty of doing what you're doing in the Prince George region. I commend you and your students on the substantial effort. I would be happy to put up a High School page here on HH and do what I can with it. Obviously it would live or die owith what you and all the rest of the schools can supply me with in terms of stories and photos. If anyone has any ideas please let me know as this would be a work in progress. I'm not sure what the Association has planned, but if somebody could let me know I would be more than happy to give you space here or link to any related sites. LP

02/05/00 The drag racing television world just oiled down bigtime. ESPN2's coverage of Pomona qualifying was moved to 1am so the 'mainstream fan' would not miss the America's cup boat (and I mean BOAT) race. 'We Have Ignition" currently refers to the way pissed off drag fans are setting fire to their sets...or maybe the flames going into the big TWO's email box about now. Will be very interesting to see just how many actually voice their concern in writing. Hell, it could be a test to see just how many give a damn....

Had a conversation with a 'street' racer today. We discussed the many 'street legal' races at MRP, and how BCCCA has increased their allocation of these race dates over the past two years. The reason is obvious. One, the street dudes and dudettes (I suppose) have more friends than the bracket bashers for they bring in far more spectators. KaChing. (Ya, I saw it elsewhere today and liked it!) And two, since the 'events' are mostly non-elimination affairs, it takes much less manpower to run and hey...no payouts. Trophies are cheap. KaChing. KaChing. Look for this 'cost-saving' trend to continue as rumor has it BCCCA is not the richest nonprofit organization in the world. CaThunk. "It's getting boring out there anyway" I was told. "There's no racing except for the top cars. Boring". My contact went on "Ya, gonna put nitrous in, but not for the track". Seems she just wants to go out once, maybe twice to see what it'll run on the bottle, then head back to the streets. A common deal as once the car gets too quick to pass tech for their particular elapsed time range (and MANY are) they simply use MRP as a test facility for the real action out on the street. They know they'll get a hit or two at numbers quicker than they are allowed to run, before getting the boot. Could this form of racing, that is promoted to sponsors, etc. as 'cleaning up the street' possibly be doing just the opposite? Race officials don't often come to that conclusion...for obvious reasons. An interesting concept would be putting it to a local politician or two. Your input on this is most welcome.

PS: speaking of Mission, their schedule that was handed out in Bellingham and posted here last week has changed.

8:15am An extra ugly day yesterday as I got next to nothing done prepping the house then waiting for hours for the real estate walk-thru that never happened. Don't ask...their error not mine. Therefore all those Alberta Stock/Super Stock people waiting for videos will have to give it one more day. Plans are hectic trying to finish all the customer tapes before I start (you read the correctly) the HH99 drag tape, in hopes of a debut at the big Cruisers/Eagle Motorplex bash two weeks today. This in between doing some work for the Vancouver Motorsport Show and Evergreen Speedway...among other stuff. Hopefully by March 1 I will be able to sit back and take a breath...but I doubt it.

Pomona continues to be the place to be this weekend, and once you check all the corp sites for the results, make sure you stop by Header Flames for the real scoop! Lot's of guys going out there each day, before tossing back a bunch of brown liquid then posting all kinds of 'interesting' news and views.

As for 'our' guys, FMD is looking plenty stout especially with Mark Hentges number two at a 5.509 253.04...in a nitro car! Dale Carlson is six with a 5.563 242.10, while more D6 injected types include Mike McHarge (10th 5.700 255.53) and Gary Anderson (15th 5.866 217.18). FMFC is a little weak with 'Leaders' though John Hyland in a Camaro sits in the number nine position with a 5.792 249.90, and Bucky is in 14th with a 5.910 241.24. Then there is the Froggy one, with a new tuner (Jason Howell) on the bump with a 5.910 241.24. Russ Parker failed to make the program with a 5.98. No Pat Austin as I understand Walt is home recovering from recent heart surgery. Best wishes there for sure!!

Not that I'm a whizz with all these names, but recognize Clint Sallee atop the Comp field in his C/D at 'only' .665 under, the little G/D of Brian Herstay 7th, Alan Freese 16th, Phil Cocuzza is back and in the 18 spot, Nick Jondahl 22nd, and my hero Frank Nelson 31st.

We still have a couple left going into today's round two of Super Stock including Terry Sherrill (who will face Doug Lambeck) and former Pomona champ Mark Faul. Amazingly the only other D6 car there was Steve Polack who lost to Blakeney in round one. Three D6 SS at the Big Go West...interesting.

Many more in Stock including Mark and Gary Faul (Mark's dad), Bill Kost, Jim and son Eric Waldo, Jody Lang, the ladies Jackie Alley and Mary Ann Method, Aldon Miller and that other Lang dude Jody.

Super Comp sees Mark Carver, Jeff Tucker, Mike Henderson, and Steve Federlin while Super Gas finds Todd Simms, Randy Fries, and George Scott ready to rock in round three today.

Misc notes: Pro Stock Truck includes but one non-GM, a Mopar. Pro Stock has ten Firebirds, the pair of Coughlin Oldsmobiles, two Camaros, one Dodge and a lone Ford Probe.

The nitro class info can be had in so many places I won't waste time on them.

And the 'Blue Blazers' have made their debut at Pomona. Rumored to be made of Kevlar I wonder two things: do some of the rather 'rotund' gentlemen get two, and what is the charge to remove beer stains Sunday night when they get turned in?

Kick butt down there girls and boys (hope I didn't miss anybody), closest thing I may get today is a dyno sesson. LP

02/04/00 Well I see the new MRP site is up...and still using the animated logo/tree gif I created (and donated to them) years ago. Noticed they removed HH from their links. No explanation as to why. Guess I didn't suck up like Evans and Wilson (who are included). I'm sure the CMDRA will also be amused they were left out as well. I still have the new schedule that was released last week posted here. Their site says it's not yet complete and that the season starts "sometime in March". Make your plans now eh...

Reports coming in regarding 'Heat' say same old stuff, another tells of a great new sportsman site at http://www.sportsmanreport.com Check it out, looks very good.

And how 'bout that Vince McMahon? Starting his own pro football league and getting rid of some of the 'sissy' rules of the NFL. Check the WWF site for more info on the XFL. Rumor had it he was actually looking into doing a similar drag racing venture. I can see it now: no burnouts allowed, wheelie bars banned...I could only wish.

A new member of the HH crew came on board last weekend, replacing a tried-and-true worker whom we'll all miss. Mr. Optura gave way to Mr. GL1. We now have a truly capable camcorder that will improve both our stills and video. Look for results soon. As for Mr. Optura, he has found a new home over in...ready? Northern Thunder land. Yup, Wilson has a camcorder now, and for all the people and groups he terrorizes on a regular basis, they will surely cringe in agony as soon he'll be able to add images to his often scathing remarks. I can't wait!

And sorry for not posting much of the constant flow of email lately, but here's a sampling:

Larry, Trying my hand at creating a web site, not as cool as HH but what is? Give it a look. Thanks

Hey this is neat! Anybody with a '48 huffed Topo site is definately HH material. Nice job Paul! LP

VOLUNTEERS URGENTLY NEEDED! The CMDRA is looking for volunteers in the Prince George, Edmonton and Ashcroft areas to distribute posters & flyers, and to sell advertising & sponsorships. Please call 604-882-1009 and leave a message for Doug McNeil.

And speaking of bike stuff, our pal in Oz John Baremans of Dragster Australia sent these killer shots of last weekend's Nitro Harley World Series at Calder Park. No captions, but you informed people out there will know...CLICK HERE.

Hi this is Jason Mercer. I just wanted to send you a couple pictures of my new car for the 2000 season. I plan to run Supercomp during the 2000 season. The car should be finished for March as it is just about race ready now. The car will be powered by a 555ci engine and powerglide two speed. I look forward to seeing you all at the race track. And if there is anyone who is seriously interested in sponsoring me and having there name on the back quarter panel please contact me. I could use the help as I plan on competing in all division six events and a few national events starting in Las Vegas this year.
Yours truly Jason Mercer

Good lookin' ride Jason. Hope it does wheelies like the Datsun! LP

We have recieved word of a MASSIVE update over at Bill Pratt's awesome Draglist site. Always a good place to visit on a regular basis, make sure you have some time to have a look.

Safe racing to all at the Fairplex, and good luck to the Div. Six people! Wish me and Mr. GL1 were there....LP

02/03/00 Month number two of the new mill, and what does your friendly local webmaster wanna do on the first day of the drag racing season...what else? WHINE!!!!

It was oh 'bout threeish this afternoon when I suddenly recalled that today is day one of the Winters. Well let's just surf over to the high dollar corporation site and see what's cookin'. Well darned if there weren't actually a half dozen or so PHOTOS up! Wow. Great! Then since qualifying started at 8am, I guess I'll check the results...just click on that ole RESULT link...hmmmm, can't find it. Lets's try here....no. How 'bout HERE. Nuthin'. Just gotta be an oversite, I'll go over to that 'other' corporate site, Summit. Drag Race Central's gotta have it. Geez...nuthin' there either. I mean NOTHING. It's 3:00 p.m. people. WAKE THE F UP! After about a half hour of going all over those two sites (many times to the same pages more than four or five times) I give up.

What is this, a silent memorial to Ed Dykes or what?

Update 7:00 pm. Well there it is on both sites. ALL the results from the race that is probably the most looked forward to of the entire season. All the results...down to Comp.... No Stock or Super Stock. AAAAAARRRRRRGGGG!!!!! Then to make matters worse, some bozo with 90/90 vision has decided to make the print so small, a magnifying glass is now manditory websurfing equipment. The Summit result pages are ok, the listing pages? SOME UV US ARE OLD. SUM OV US CAINT SEE TOO GOOD NO MO. Sum uv us have 17 inch (and larger) screens, and resetting them to 640x480 is a JOKE!...Hey SUMMIT WEBDUDES are you listening????

There IS NO excuse NHRA and SUMMIT. You guys have been at this for years! More crap, more...you know.

I AM NOT IMPRESSED! Though the pics were ok....except the generic (why....why?) Pro Stock Truck junk.

Not a good way to start the season. As for 'Heat', It's freezing cold up here in ESPN2less land.

REALLY Hoping somebody cares enuf to get this together tomorrow. LP

PS: Ya I got more stuff for here, but video is still the word. Sorry.
