06.30.00 1:30pm Although I was in my vehicle until 12:30 today and unable to call into the Bill Good Show on CKNW, I did attempt from then until the close of the segment at 1pm. I want to go on record and thank Mr. Good for not only seeing it our way, and giving it time on his program, but for a short editorial that explained the sad situation in the most articulate terms I have ever heard or read. Unfortunately I was unable to get through as but one 'drag racer' did in the entire 40 minutes allotted. A 64 year old drag racer who made us sound very good indeed. Thanks to that caller, whoever he is. As bad as this situation still is, I did notice CKNW did not use the term 'drag racing' on any newscasts after 11pm...when the Good show started. If you have complained to the local media or not, a quick email thanking Bill Good is in order. He is one of the top media personalities in not only Vancouver, but the entire country. He's the kind of person we need to see it our way. Just a simple thank you goes a long way with these people. EMAIL AND THANK BILL GOOD.

On another related note, I sincerely hope someone from BCCCA contacts 'the official daily paper of MRP' The Province (Read complete story HERE) to let them know, in no uncertain terms, that their use of the term 'drag racing' in today's paper regarding this tragic affair is not appreciated. Unfortunately the other local paper is owned by the same company, so threatening to pull their ads would do no good at all.

Finally, I put out a public plea from drag racers of the Lower Mainland to our friend, and longtime drag racer Terry McHardy to somehow inform the Vancouver Police Media Relations Officer Anne Drennan to not use the term 'drag racing' when she confronts the media on these occasions. Named Vancouver 'Officer of the Year' in 1998, McHardy utilizes the sport of drag racing to approach children of all ages with his wonderful 'Say NO To Drugs' program. Help us on this one Terry... please!

11:15am Despite the station's 11am lead news story describing a search for the 'drag racers' who killed a pedestrian two nights ago, I have been informed that on the Bill Good program today at approx. 12:20pm the issue of drag racing and street racing will be brought up. Now this segment usually only lasts ten minutes, but if you can tune and/or call in please do. The AM number on the dial is 980 or they have webcast at http://www.cknw.com.

1:00am Well, we must be doing something right as yesterday this site saw a hit count of...ready? 51,663. Thank you. Funny how, when I get a bit radical, the hit count goes through the roof. Are you guys that hard up for entertainment? LP

06.29.00

FLASH TRASH UPDATE: 11:30pm While flipping channels I tuned into CKVU's 11:30 news and was shocked to see the absoutely UNBELIEVEABLE text across screen that read DRAG RACER KILLS PEDESTRIAN... it's back to war troops. Call 604-872-6397 or email comments.van@globaltv.ca and tell them what you think of them. DON'T HOLD BACK...GET UGLY!! USE WORDS YOUR MOMMA WARNED YOU NEVER TO. IT'S ALL THESE IDIOTS UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!

Larry; If you realy want to flip out go to http://www.tvforbc.com/video/video_news.html and listen to the BCTV News report on the hit and run accident. They go even one step further and blame Mission Raceways.

Response from this webmaster:
I missed the news tonight, but did view the online video.

Not exactly sure if BCTV is 'blaming' MRP for this though, as they state something along the lines of "they try this when they leave the track" not to be the least bit untrue. Let's face it, street racing, especially among the well-to-do, Vancouver crowd is as popular now, maybe even more so, than it was in the 60s, and there is nothing anyone will ever be able to do to curb it. Street racers are like street hookers. They have always been there and no matter what anyone does they always will be. During some periods of time there are more than others. We are currently at the high point of such a period.

I street raced at one time and to this day 'play' at the occasional street light, though nowhere near to the extent of three digit speeds. I don't know of ONE single 'drag racer' who still occasionally does or has not ever done exactly the same thing.

I have made the statement here before that the promotion of 'street legal' drag racing has done more to glamorize illegal 'street' racing than anything we have seen in decades. As bad as it is, I stick to that statement. Take the recent Toronto-based A&E program reviewed here a few months ago as the perfect example. In this case reality hurts as I know full well how many local 'street legal' racers ply their trade on the real streets of the Lower Mainland more than ever since the origins of 'street legal' racing a few years ago. No, not all of them do this, but more than just a few do.

Anyone who argues that illegal street racing is not bigger now than before the origins of 'street legal' drag racing is a fool who does not know what the hell actually goes on from Richmond to Chilliwack every damn weekend it doesn't rain. I have spoken to them many times. I have been invited out with them (And always refused) Hell, I have been offered video of local drag racing 'officials' street racing. To deny it is to have your head in the sand. It isn't who's quickest at the strip that matters in 'street legal', it's who kicks ass on a Friday night at any one of a half dozen regular spots, and I'm talking ten second cars here, not just the Boxter and Bimmer Bozos in tonight's newscast. Why the hell do so many of them constantly argue how 'really' streetable their cars are? It ain't about goin for groceries bucko. Thankfully most of the really fast cars do NOT street race as they have become SO fast, street racing is no longer a viable option.

I look at the BCTV piece as just another sensational top story of one particular slow news night on drag racers and street racers from a media outlet that has always used blood and gore more than any other in the constant ratings battle with their competition. It obviously works as the 'Tony' 6pm show is the top rated news program in the entire country. Blood, like sex sells. Harsh but true.

At least they used the term 'street' racing and not 'drag' racing, and that's about all the REAL drag racers can hope and try for. LP

Update 2:00 pm They are now calling it just 'racing'. Cool, it worked, but that's no reason to stop calling or writing.
HELP!!! DO THIS...Just DO IT! The leading news station in Vancouver is CKNW. Today they keep broadcasting 'drag racing' on their reports of a street racing fatality last night. The news tip number is 604-331-2832, email is nwnews@cknw.com. FLOOD these jerks...DO IT!!!! I called and SCREAMED today and emailed too. So now it's your turn. Believe me it's REALLY fun doing this. Probably won't make a difference, but what the hell, you get to call some news idiot every name in the book. Even more fun is to listen to the station awhile (980am) determine a 'suitable' sponsor, call them, pretend to place a massive order then ask something like; "Oh, by the way, do you advertise on CKNW?" When they say they do, hit 'em where it hurts and immediately cancel that order! Feel free to tell them why. You will have done nothing illegal, and besides having a blast (In a Bart Simpson kinda way), maybe helped the cause of drag racers everywhere. If anyone does this please send me details. No I won't post your identity.

Thanks to the many who responded to the above request regarding 'street racing' in the media. At least one major media outlet got the message...for now. I believe the only way we will defeat these devils is to keep up the pressure. I promise, from now on, to report this kind of thing so the hidden HH army can go on the immediate offensive. We will never again sit back and let the 'mainstream media' trash us.

Speaking of Media, the recent announcement of NHRA on ESPN is just another yawner for us Canadians, who, thanks to our government are not allowed to view such foreign propaganda. Put in the same vain as child porn, American sports networks are strictly verboten north of the 49th. Amazing that in the 21st century our dictator in Ottowagrad can still lay this crap on us and we obey like a pack of Lemmings...Then again Glendora could not get a weekly show out of it anyway...Then then again again it would probably be the same old NHRA television garbage anyway.

Our photo coverage of the Mission Federal-Mogul is now basically complete, as I don't know if I have the gumption to scan a bunch of hi rez images, but we'll see. I believe it to be the biggest photo coverage of any one single drag race in the history of the sport. With approx. 250 images now available for your viewing. I felt HH sorta owed it to the many people who do not have decent access to the videos we have been producing lately. As for the lack of decent captions, I'm afraid I slacked off due to the long hours and didn't even attempt to get any sheets until Sunday evening. Trying to name everyone along with numbers would have been much easier with more info, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Have received a bunch of neat email and attachments lately, I hope to post them soon. The customer video stuff? Well, I hope to begin tomorrow or Saturday. Speaking of which is the big Junior event at Mission. I will try my best to go out and do what I can to support the kids as we all know they don't get anywhere near the support from web sites and magazines like they should.

later: LP

2:00 pm Saturday and Sunday postinsg of more Mission FMDRS Photos are now HERE.

06.28.00 5:30 First of many Mission FMDRS Photos are now HERE.

06.27.00 6:00 Well I began today at 7am capturing photos for the MRP FM coverage. It's now 11 hours later and have had the latest of about a dozen crashes today. I have nearly 200 images done, and sort of expected a crash during this final capture session. Later tonight I hope to almost complete this project, as i still have to compress, place, caption and upload.

Received a request from Ron Farmer that Mission Raceway is seeking sponsors in an effort to bring Pro Stocks to the NHRA National Open July 22/23. You can telephone the track at 604-826-6315 if interested and he assures me any message will be passed immediately to him. He did offer his home phone, but I refuse to post personal numbers on the web.

A number of people on the weekend said "see you at Woodburn". Sorry to disappoint, but I probably will not be able to make it. A missed opportunity today could have produced nearly enough cash to pay for the trip, but the word came too late for me to act on it. If some late payments come in, my truck gets fixed....again...as I have to drive myself to this one, a possible Monday project there can be accomplished, and/or a sponsor or two come forward...well, we'll see.

Then there is the HH99 dilemma. If I could actually get some time to complete it I know the sales are still there, but it would take at least a week to complete...if the software problem doesn't end it maybe for good. I know it'll get better, but life around here sucks right now. LP

06.26.00 I took the day off....so bite me.
06.25.00 9:00 Mission FMDRS Sunday results HERE. Maybe it was because I spent most of the day either shooting cars or relaxing in the shade, but this Sunday at Mission Raceway Park was one for the books. Under a gorgeous blue sky (a rarity in these parts lately) this reporter enjoyed the best single day of drag racing this facility has seen all year. Everyone had a smile on and appeared to be having a good time. While we have all the 'official' results on the event homepage, have managed to solve at least the photo problem for the moment, so since we shot with that kind of coverage in mind today, rest assured you won't require a hispeed hookup to view what we will soon offer. In the meantime congrats to all the winners, and kudos to the newly crowned burnout king of the northwest, our very own Glen Braid who not once, but twice came up beside the huffed big block Chevelle of Chris Martin and showed 'em how a small block Canadian piece can boil the hides. First we have the first 'round' that saw Martin all crossed up at about 100ft, with Braid continuing on for a couple of hundred more.

Then an hour or so later they switched lanes, Martin again got crossed up and the little Canso boiled 'em for over 500ft, coming to a stop at the 1000 ft mark, well past the beer garden crowd who gave him the biggest cheer of the weekend!

Later Braid was quoted as saying he was 'considering' going to the end of the quarter mile, but decided to save something for next time a challenger comes forward...hehehehehehehehe!

06.24.00 10:30 Mission FMDRS Saturday results HERE. Obviously a very long day...again. Last car went down the track a few minutes before 9pm. So it's off to bed and back out at 7am tomorrow. Hopefully we will get home at a decent hour to be able to bring you more than just the basic results. We do have some absoutely spectacular video that will most likely be presented in still photo form as the video software problem mentioned yesterday may take some time to sort out. From the alochol ranks to wheelstanding Stockers and Super Stockers along with the best field of Top Comp ever (we actually had 'bumping' going on in the last session today) including a totally awesome field of blown door cars unlike anything ever seen at this facility, HH will do it to ya...

I don't know if it's just that I am tired, but so many of my conversations with people today revolved around complete and total negativity. From Jr. Dragster parents getting pissed at each other, to the same old bracket racer rants at these races, parking problems, BCCCA infighting crap, how this racer hates that racer, how somebody doesn't like somebody else's spouse, to this team or that driver gets special treatment...pick your bitch and I heard it today. Gawd this 'sport' makes for a positive family atmosphere.........

06.23.00 Mission FMDRS Friday results HERE. 11:00pm After spending an hour downloading a few dozen killer photos the system crashed. Sorry maybe tomorrow, but am once again I am fighting a severe system corruption problem, that causes crashes about every ten minutes. It will require an complete clean system re-install (a full days work for me) to MAYBE cure. Not a good situation. Together with this and the fact our racer video productions are not cost effective for us, and being so far behind on so much, I am once again considering getting out of this gig. I can handle about of being broke, overworked, and behind on stuff to a point, but throw in more computer problems and I'm about ready to say F it. LP

06.21.00 UPDATE
From one of my California racer sources come this, which I believe to be about as 'insider' as somebody like me can get:

Graham Light is still the Vice President of Competition and now is solely responsible for National events and Pro categories.

Ned Walliser is leaving NHRA effective following the U.S. Nationals. He is moving back to Indy to be closer to his family, spend less days on the road and take over as VP for Sport Service.

Gene Bergstrom was released on Tuesday, June 20. However, the press release announcing his replacement was written on Friday, June 16.

BREAKING NEWS
It's being posted on Header Flames that Ned Walliser (Director of National Event Planning and former Div. 7 DD), Graham Light (Senior Vice President-Racing Operations and former Edmonton racer, among other things) and Gene Bergstrom (Director of Field Operations, and former Div. 6 DD) are no longer with NHRA. This (currently only a rumor) comes after yesterday's NHRA posting of the hiring of Len Imbrogno, as Director of Sportsman Racing and Member tracks.

Videos are currently going together. Most everyone's, except those who signed up at Mission at the last Federal-Mogul, will be ready. Reason for that being I don't have enough good stuff of everyone yet as MRPFM1 was not exactly a full meal deal. If it doesn't rain this weekend, I'll have plenty, for delivery at Woodburn.

As this racer video thing keeps me jumping, and the fact that a number of queries have come in, I now have an advertising rate page ready. For complete details on how you can finally advertise on horsepowerheaven.com please GO HERE.

A few are probably wondering where the heck the Quicktime and Windows videos are. Well the hispeed Quicktime one is HERE, but I'm not happy with it. It's a download only as I didn't have the time to figure out how to embed it. The Windoz version crashed the Mac...gee that's a surprise. SO. It's Real only from now on. I tried, but for QT need the expensive compressors that I refuse to pay for since it would not make them that much better than the current quality I can get from Real. Windoz media...? I dunno, I'll try it again when I have a moment.

Got the 2000 Info Sheet from Firebird's Pepsi Nightfire Nationals. The oldest event of it's kind in America and the biggest in the west, the 24th annual bash is slated for August 9th - 13th. From brackets to a multitude of nitro and feature vehicles, it's an event friendly to nearly every kind of racer and fans alike. This year the event purse hits a record $145,000!!! Told ya it was big. HH proudly states without a doubt that if you travel to just one drag race in the year 2000, the Nightfires at Firebird should be on the top of your list. Here's just a few reason why:

...and so much more make this a laid-back affair that's as close as you'll ever get to the kind of drag race 'you used to got to'. For complete details on how to get there, where to stay, what you can do and see and most important the MANY benefits of preregistration, START HERE.

Sad news to pass along. "Our family's long time companion Max (the dog) who loved to have her picture taken was run over by our rig this morning as we were pulling into the driveway. She died instantly, we all are very sad. And I know it will be hard at the divisional this weekend without her."

See you this weekend.
The Pecks.

The only way I know to try and cheer people up is to do stuff, so with respect to Max's memory I have decided to post a hispeed version of the video I promised a few days ago, and completed moments before I got this news. Please CLICK HERE and...

Video (and possibly photos) of yesterday's race coming later today.

Mission FMDRS stuff: Wednesday is a test day. I do not know ANY other details so call the track at 604-826-6315 for complete info. Parking will begin 12noon Thursday. Larry Miner is expected to fill out the flopper field giving Pat Austin possibly his only real test. Bucky Austin tested here this past weekend and many wondered if he had some trick new engine combination as he pitted at the far, far end of the track and for a few who asked got no info from the Hitter. Car ran ok, but will need much more to go against Pat. I spoke with two informed sources Sunday who said they had spoken directly with a certain FMD driver who wants badly to return to MRP. It was said that they had all but promised to make one of the two races this year. We'll just have to wait and see if a big Oakwood Homes trailer pulls up to the gate later in the week.

Misc HH stuff: Stickers are all gone. Hope to have more for the FM. Also hope to have all customer tapes done a ready to deliver. HH99 now put off until after this FM.

06.18.00 12:50am 'Randy Hoists a Hugo'...Details below

06.17.00 Ya know...pause. Ya know, it sucks when you run out of time to do the stuff ya do. It's 10:45 as I write this and I'm toast. It obviously means that 'killer instinct' of staying up till it's done and worry about how you feel tomorrow, tomorrow, is not burning too deep. I must say that when you have a couple of groups as great to work with as the Pacific Northwest Super Comp Association and the Northwest Super Street Association, it makes life much easier. This site will have complete video results of this weekend asap. I promise HH has a bunch of the best 'Super' class video the web has yet seen.

After actually being 'forced' to sit and watch Super Comp session-after-session, I have actually grown to love it. Super classes are people classes. It's more about the drivers and crew who won than the car. They are also fantastic to work with on a business basis. I've ended up with a truck load of customers, and I'm struggling to keep up. Sorta why I'm not exactly advertising it just now.

What our video will include:

Super shifter class...all sticks n doors ...bitchin.

Distefano's Pro Truck... Sevens on home soil.

Of course you'll get Braid's runs from Friday.

The test n tune stuff from...get Ready...Bucky Austin...a Top Fuel Harley...a NEW wheelstanding, flamed bracket doorster...

and yes...

Ok, so it's now past midnight and I guess I do have a bit o the stuff left in me: GO HERE for pics. Especially For the videoless ones out there.

Oh and one more thing. In an effort to stay current in this gig, all hi-speed videos will, from this day forth, be initially posted in Real, Quicktime, Windows & MPEG...in that order, so hang in there if you can't sort out the RealPlayer....(the free one, not the $29.95 one....bottom right on the $29.95 page...)

Stu Wotypka of Intelligent Development is just plain BAD!! In a flash he comes up with my new vehicle. Now, if Chrysler Canada comes up with a shell, F.J. Smith a chassis, and a few other things happen...such as a major lottery win, I will show up with this piece to run Top Comp next weekend...

06.13.00 Larry, I noticed someone mentioned on your site about Bruce Flodin being the first CT/SA to run in the 11's. Unfortunately for him this is not true. Last year one of Jack McCormacks trucks ran an 11.98 at the Gatornationals during eliminations trying to win class. It too was a 318 Dodge Dakota & it ran in CT/SA. Just thought I would correct that for someone. You want to get up early in the morning if you're gonna out data me on the stock eliminator trucks LOL. I keep records off the internet of every race I can find where there are stock eliminator trucks running. {Not Obsessed- Just keeping an eye on the competition. LOL} Anyway I'll see you in Mission on the 22nd or 23rd.

Oh I almost forgot, where are the HH decals for my truck? Hope you have some for this event. If you do, bring them by on Thursday so I can put them on for Friday!!!

Randy Hutchings 6006

Well Randy, (and all the others who have DEMANDED HH stickers for their rides) I hope to have a number on hand at that event (Black for light colored cars, and orange for dark...your choice), and be able to get them out to all of my customers as I deliver their tapes. For site visitors who have asked for them, I'll try to work out something. LP

Just a quick note to say that if you have one of those atrocious California Special Mustangs of the late 60s, or better still, a real GT500, paint the damn thing grey with black stripes and for the next month or so watch the cash offers roll in. Take the best one and laugh all the way to the bank. A PT Cruiser on the other hand? The same movie that has made Shelby Mustangs 'trendy' will make the little Mopar 'thing' the most sought after vehicle for Nick Cage wannabes. I once thought the PTC was cool...two years ago when I saw it in a magazine. Now, like most other things trendy, I could give a rat's butt. Like Prowlers, these cars are for the few bozoz who can afford new vehicles that underage females would die for. In cases like this 'cool' simply means "lookie what I got"...BFD. Trendy cars are cool...only until every idiot has one. And for the PTC that time is now. Until a drag racer gets one and turns it into a pro mod. Hey Stu how 'bout a rendering???

Ever since Don Murray got a new DVcamcorder we've been receiving pics like crazy. Here's a cool one:

Check out www.67ss396.com for the first season shakedown test results, bloopers, and vehicle specs.

Tom Meheden called to say he didn't run 7.61 at Ashcroft, but 7.16 twice along with a 7.19. Best mph was 193!

All I have heard from the Loafer race is a blurb from the now 'annual' Saturday night burnout contest smack in the middle of town. A bunch of shit-faced drunks doing burnouts mere inches from a few hundred equally influenced spectators....as cool as this is for so many people, I dread the day somebody gets injured....

Here's proof that I'm not the only one who posts something then screws it up later. Taken from the MRP FAQ page:

Q14. If a race event is rained out will Mission reschedule it to another weekend? A.NO! Absolutely not! During 1999 we experienced far too many problems with rescheduled events being 'ganged up' on already busy race weekends. This culminated in the disastrous Car Club Weekend in September. We will not repeat this mistake in the year 2000. The only exception to this rule is the FMDRS Event which has a pre-scheduled rain date. LP

Rick Distefano will be in Mission for the next two weekends. This weekend he will be testing and may drop into a class the following weekend. As competetive as Rick is, his main focus at Mission over the next two weekends will be to test and tune and gather as much data as possible. Rick looks forward to seeing everyone at Mission and getting some of that good Mission air for him and his truck."

06.12.00 MRP Street Legal video now available. I didn't have the time to do a voice over, or try to figure out who everyone is so I'm afraid you'll just have to watch and guess who each one is.28k Street Legal Mission June 11/2000

Hi speed Street Legal Mission June 11/2000

06.11.00 So, if MRP doesn't reschedule rainouts...but did with the doorslammers last weekend...what do they tell the Super troops, none of whom can book a track rental this Friday because of the rescheduled high school event? Maybe mail out a flyer a few days after the date it concerns? Sorry guys, but I had so many people talking to me about these things lately, I had to at least make a mention...One thing for sure, they have a new webmaster...and site.

From a regular visitor: Toby Lang r/up at Div. 1 Delmar Event. Should have seen the qualifying sheet. Made sure he would qualify last 80 something to run #1. Knows how to play the game.

First three responses to video viewer were all different....oh I love this non-standard crap. All these idiots should make a viewer that can view everything, then make it cool, make it easy and people like me can get on with it...

6:00pm Mission ran about half a day, with no runs of significance. Believe an 8oh something by Braid was best. Streeter Civic with anitfreeze, synth oil and nitrous windowed on line just before we arrived. Was said to have been fairly spectacular, with rod thru block, etc. Lot's of squirrly runs from the fast guys. The Moznic shoebox had oil in the top of one of the holes, and wisely didn't chance a run. The new El Camino ran well first time out with former Merkley 427. Well heck, if ya gimee a few hours, I'll show ya. Video cumin up...28k version first...ALSO A VIDEO QUESTION: If you don't use, or like Real what is your next favorite web video format? MPEG? Windows Media? Quicktime? Lemme know LP

Rich Carlson checked in from Kamloops about 3pm saying that he listened on LIVE RADIO as Tom Meheden ran a 7.61. Neat. He said the weather there was beautiful, so the Plex is most certainly on. If anyone returns with video, please send it, we'll compress it and post it.

Edmonton has been called due to rain, no word from Ashcroft, and I'm heading out to MRP now. Skies are grey, but ground is mostly dry...wish us luck.

06.10.00 Man I hate rain, I hate it so much I decided to tackle the worst HH job I have. Updating the Links Page.

Somebody get an adding machine... not spam, as I found the info interesting, just have never seen it laid out this clear & easy before.

My old drag boat days are starting to look pretty darn good about now...The street show at Mission rained out without a car down the tracks...same thing at the NHRA National Open in Edmonton. No word from Ashcroft, but the satellite image did not show much hope there either. We may get lucky here tomorrow, we may not. Edmonton report not looking good.

Then again, MRP did run a test session yesterday, from which we recieved this:

Just thought I would give a congrats out to Bruce Flodin who, I believe today, is the first CTSA pickup to run in the 11's. In less than ideal track conditions to boot. Don't quote me but I believe it was an 11.96 at 104. One fast stocker. -Greg

06.08.00 11:00pm GREAT NEWS!! AJ was released from the hospital today and is recovering at home.

This is what it says in the new National Dragster about a incident at MRP FMDRS in May.
NHRA has taken disciplinary action against three individuals for their involvement in an incident at the Div.6 FMDRS event at MRP in Mission, B.C. ET racers Andrew Dresher has been suspended indefinitely for verbally and physically threatening a fellow competitor and his family, and for driving a pit vehicle in a reckless manner. Dresher has also been fined $1000.00 and may not apply for reinstatement for a period of three years. Top Comp racer Neil Lachelt has also been suspended for operating a vehicle in the pit area in a reckless manner and has been suspended for one year. ET racer Shawn Lecy has been placed on probation for a period of one year for his involvement in the incident. All three have the right to appeal the actions taken against them. They may do so by submitting a written notice of appeal and submitting a $300.00 filing fee within 30 days.

Streeters...this weekend MRP.

From our friend Bill Pratt

The Drag Racing List has been updated with all the stats and info through the end of May 2000. Yes, we finally got your updates in there! Thanks to Danny White and all our contributors for their hard work.

After missing my own weekend deadline, I stayed home all day Wednesday and worked hard on the new lists. You will LIKE what you see! I finally did what I've been gabbing about for so long -- I sorted all the racers by YEAR first, and ranked them from best to worst for EACH YEAR! No longer will we have to look at the top racer from 1977 being listed as the 2,343rd quickest car in the sport! I've been looking through the lists in this new way and it's really bringing back a lot of memories.

Just as I suspected, however, it's really showing where we need some more work. There are some cars in some years that are CLEARLY listed way too early for the ETs we show. We need to get everybody's help. Please go to the class you are most familiar with and the YEAR you are most familiar with, and fire off some information to us!

I also added a third list for each class -- best performance BY YEAR! So, we have three lists now:

The racers sorted by NAME for EACH YEAR (with appropriate rankings for each year, but sorted by name). These are the biggest lists. They contain not only what you see on the page, but also two additional pages of info to the right of the screen. All you have to do is scroll to see it!

The traditional all-time quickest lists are unchanged. Racers are listed by pure performance, without regard for when the run occurred. Obviously, cars that are more recent top the list.

The newest list is sorted by best ET and speed by individual YEAR. The cool thing about this is you can see who the tough guys were all throughout time. The other cool thing in Pro Stock is, you can see where the Test and Time runs fall into the lists, although the test runs are given a zero ranking. Another thing I did with this list is I left in every driver in every car they drove. Unlike the all time quickest list, each driver is listed for EVERY car he or she drove each year. This way, we can see the relative rankings of all cars a driver drove. These are the lists that are going to help us find out incorrect entries. Some racers are leading some of the early years with ETs that they clearly did not run that early. HELP!

By our next DRL update, I hope to implement two additional lists!

One will show cars ranked according to their relative toughness throughout time, with factors considered for how early they ran their best time and for how quick their best time was compared to the average for the class in those years. It should be very interesting!

Finally, we are going to give all the eighth mile racers something to cheer about, when we include their very own lists... This will probably be reserved for the doorslammer classes, as most other classes don't race on the eighth that much. Perhaps the alky funnies, but I can't say for sure right now. Check in for our next update and find out!

THE NITRONIC RESEARCH AA/FD LIST EXPECTS TWO WEEKS OF TORRID DRAG STRIP ACTION!

by Cole Coonce, NR Mojo Wire

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

6/08/00, Los Angeles, CA--With summer imminent the heat is being turned up accordingly in the AA/Fuel Dragster wars. Competition for AA/FD's commences in subsequent weekends 2000 miles apart, first at the Goodguys 10th Indy Hot Rod Nationals this weekend (June 9-11), followed by Sacramento Raceway's Nitro Night of Fire/WCTA Jim Herbert Memorial on June 17th & 18th.

As teams prepare for competition for these events, we felt it was incumbent to voice who on the List was going to be doing what, where and how...

Three teams on the List (Gotelli, Champion, Suhr & Lechtenberg) are in competition this weekend at Indy and are not expected to campaign the next weekend at Sacramento. Conversely, the other seven teams on the List *are* expected to race at Sacramento. Here's how it shakes out:

1. WW2. Defending champion of the Jim Herbert Memorial, which is a nice conceptual and emotional touch since Herbert was the previous majordomo of this racecar. Since the car was purchased by Jim "Holy Smokes" Murphy at the end of last season, the team has subscribed to the Bauhaus School of Design "less is more" philosophy, with both the car and driver undertaking a diet as well as shortened stroke and diminished bore to the powerplant. The ensuing numbers have spoken for themselves, with a runner-up finish at the Goodguys March Meet followed by a #1 Qualifying volley at the rain-aborted Nitro Nationals at Sears Point in April.

As a footnote, your humble reporter's e-mail inbox has been lovebombed with diplomatic complaints about tallying the WW2 entries' Nitro Nationals Low ET performance towards further domination of The List. It is no secret to those who were paying close attention in Sears Point that Murphy posted his superlative 6.06 in the preferred right lane during his final qualifying attempt that weekend. The controversy lies in the fact that Murphy had already run in that lane, a practice contrary to traditional drag racing protocol; which is to say during qualifying sessions a team is supposed to change lanes during subsequent attempts.

No matter as far as the arbiters of the List are concerned. It ain't our job to police the staging lanes during a drag race, it's the responsibility of either the sanctioning body or track employees. Take it up with them, we say.

And as a footnote to this footnote, we must remind readers that the List refused to acknowledge WW2's 268 mph time slip at the March Meet, a number that had been recognized as Top Speed of the Meet in race coverage by not only Drag Racer Magazine, but also the Goodguys Gazette. Murphy has gone on record as saying he felt the time was legit, a notion reinforced by tuners as knowledgable as Tim "Chops" Beebe (of Beebe & Mulligan fame, among others). We at NR do not claim to be as smart as Tim Beebe, but feel that the time was pure Orville Redenbacher, particularly when noted that the speed given for the 1/8th mile was 400-odd mph. The List credited Top Speed to Steiner & Berger at 244 mph -- a decision we stand by.

2. Gotelli Speed Shop. Event runner-up from last years' Hot Rod Nationals. An event win waiting to happen as evidenced by the #2 Qualifer spot at SPIR ‹ and this weekend at Indy is as likely as any. Furthemore, the team is on a roll as far as Top End charge: 240 mph Top Speed of the Meet at the aforementioned rain-shortened Nitro Nationals. 3. Fuller & Dunlap. The nitro punditry has declared that as far finding a handle on its tune-up this team was as lost as Stevie Wonder parachuting off of a helicopter into the Canadian Wilderness to play paintball. *BUT* Fuller & Dunlap seem to be on the rebound and out of the woods if their performance at the Pro Nitro Memorial Match Race Madness at Tucson two weeks ago is any barometer. At the high-altitude track, Dunlap dominated a field that included Kent "Thrash" Terry, the Circuit Breaker, and Ty Norton, ultimately posting a 6.29 to take Top Eliminator. (Note: this race did not count towards advancement on the List as it was a 4-car match race; 8-car eliminators and up are the criteria for the List...)

The Sacramento surface, however, is notoriously unforgiving to teams that make a lot of power -- an element of which there is no shortage of for Mike Fuller.

4. California Trucker. A perplexing season thus far. If anybody knows how to make a Rat Motor swipe the cheese it is the CT braintrust of Ray Zeller and Gene Amaya. After succumbing to Fuller & Dunlap in a challenge for position at the season opening Pro Nitro Desert Thunder Nat'ls, they *can't* advance past Dunlap until they challenge him and beat him. They will be tough in Sacramento on the 17th & 18th.

5. Champion Speed Shop. Driver "Handsome Rance" McDaniel has taken to Champion hot seat like a skunk to stink. Overall, the team has been impressive and solid in two performances this year, albeit without rotating the Earth like the team did in '99. The focus and approach for Y2K seems to be maintaining the structural intergrity of the piece and no more boom-boom en route to Low ET. We'll see if this "steady as she goes" strategy pays off this weekend at Indy. Note: Any points gained at Indy will catapult Champion Speed Shop into the 3rd spot on the List.

6. Orange Crate. Waterloo, Iowa's low-slung Suhr & Lechtenberg entry is one bad ass hot rod. Cagey, crafty and diligent, it could be argued that this team was a broken throttle linkage away from stunning the California fueler guys at the March Meet in Bakersfield. If anybody has a home court advantage this weekend, it would be Suhr & Lechtenberg and the Orange Crate... Yes, we know they are from Iowa which is on the other side of the Mississippi River >from Indiana, but California front-motored fueler racers think anything East of Vegas might as well be the surface of the Moon. This kind of geographical ignorance could handicap the California cars who are not used to humid racing conditions and might allow a team like Suhr & Lechtenberg, who have posted tremendous numbers all over the Continental US, to flourish.

7. Steiner & Berger. After that notorious metal and heart-twisting 240 mph sleigh ride at the March Meet, a freshened-up chassis has this team looking for a new baseline. They didn't find it at Sears Point. Their next race is at Sacramento, not the most forgiving environment.

8. Ground Zero. This team is on a mission -- and for now, we'll leave it at that.

9. Fugowie. Best of times and worst of times. They dominated the Pro Nitro season opener, qualified 2nd at the March Meet, but got aggressive and blistered the tires on both qualifying passes at Sears Point.

10. Smith, Allred & McLennan. This team has been split more ways than Microsoft after its anti-trust suit. The only constant has been owner Dave Smith and driver Mike McLennan. The results are unknown on whether splitting up Microsoft will cripple the price of their stock. Ditto for this race team.

On the Move: There are a few teams that could catapult themselves onto the List in the next two weekends: If Jack Harris' Nitro Thunder scores either Top Speed, Low ET or the Event Win at Indy he bump Smith & McLennan. If Tedford, Hester & McGee are successful at Sacto, look for them to advance onto the List.

MASTERCAM AA/FD TO BREATHE DEEP AT INDY
by
Cole Coonce, NR Mojo Wire

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

6/08/00, Los Angeles, CA--After claiming Runner-up of the "B" Main at the Goodguys 41st March Meet and then taking a small hiatus from the front-engined fueler wars, the Mastercam AA/Fuel Dragster Race Team is preparing to breathe deeply this weekend at the Goodguys Hot Rod Nat'ls at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Although the team was happy with the overall results from the March Meet, they felt the tune-up had nosed over after qualifying. During their hiatus they have found the culprit--the supercharger. "We are going to be running a new blower," confirms team member Tom "Slick" Shelar. "The old one that we ran at the March Meet had the rotors in backwards and that had us chasing the tune-up all weekend. So we have a new blower and have redone the fuel system to put it back were it belongs."

So: They can compress more air. But the team wonders about the quality of that air... Although preliminary reports call for relatively moderate temperatures throughout the weekend, the weather at Indy is notoriouly fickle and potentially grueling. Look for the Mastercam bunch to compensate for any possible fluctuations in atmospheric conditions by any means available. As driver "Techno Tim" Gibson relates, "With the Goodguys' (rules), the blower overdrive is spec so you have to tune with compression ratios, timing, and nitro percentage."

This will be Gibson's second outing with a front-engined nitro-burning dragster and he has a hankering to learn more about the dynamics of these racecars. "Since forward vision is a problem with a front engine fueler," he says, "getting used to the feel of the car is important." Gibson, who also shoes the Bill Miller Engineering Top Fueler at select NHRA races, is continuing to gather data on the nuances of the different driving styles of his two rides, not the least of which is the difference between carbon brakes utilized by the BME rear-engined car and the steel brakes employed by the Mastercam front-engined model. "Clutch drag and the brake pressure required to hold the car on the starting line are important in staging. In other words, the more seat time the better," he said.

06.07.00 10:00pm I have held off this for a few days, but another bad biker story is still unfolding as you read this. AJ Boykin is sick, and I'm honestly not sure just how well he's doing. Vicki Strell sent in this last night:

Larry...Just letting you know that AJ Boykin was transferred to a Bellingham Hospital ICU from Mission today. As of yesterday afternoon he was in critical condition but resting comfortably in ICU. He is due for more tests in Bellingham. That is a quote from the ICU nurse at Mission. AJ Boykin, ET Motorcycle racer, suffered a heart attack at MRP and then another at Mission Hospital on Sunday.
Our prayers are for his speedy and full recovery. Get well AJ!

AJ is the very, very cool Texan who's been racing bikes here since the year it opened. If we can find some way to get messages thru we'll let you know right away.

It's difficult to post anything that follows that kind of news , but I've had this done for a couple of days, so check out the addition of news and fotos to last weekends Pro Mod Show page.

06.05.00 High Speed users now get their chance to see some serious Pro Mod action. Sunday's eliminations of the Pacific Western Breweries West Coast Pro Mod race is now posted. Thats' correct, you'll see every race in every round, plus a couple of bonus runs featuring our pal Glen Braid as well as the final in the Doorslammer series. Please note that a 28/56k version of the Sunday show will be posted soon, as will a hirez version of the Saturday qualifying package. CLICK HERE for all the action in RealVideo.
06.04.00 So what's gonna happen when Pat passes Force...oh about two years from now??? HUGE CONGRATS to the BADDEST Alky Flopper team in the land...and especially driver Pat Austin for win number 71 at the 3rd annual Prestone Route 66 Nationals today in Chicago!

And how 'bout that all-TCS Doorslammer final? Dave Richardson and Bob Marshall. Two friends. Two guys who help make this series the success story it's becoming. The TCS Baretta runs an 8.082 on an 8.08 with a .475 light...The Tom The Tire Guy Camaro an 8.50 on a 8.46 but with a .432 light! A hell of a drag race! HH looks forward to bringing you much more very soon on this rapidly expanding class.

Danny Rowe decimated the Pro Mod field here today with round runs of 6.37, 6.40 and 6.45 on his way to winning the West Coast Pro Mod show at Mission Raceway Park. In order, he got by John Scialpi (in on break rule), Richard Cross and Trevor Lowe in the final. Lowe defeated Glen Kerunsky then Andy Neyer before hurting his engine in the final with Rowe. HH is now working on a video hilight package that will include every race of every round...check back for that and much more oh...about midnight or 1am....hell I could have a real job.

But before that we simply MUST congratulate our very own J. Glenn Miller who won in Motorcycle/Sled BOTH days...won the 50/50 draw BOTH days, and the perfect run money on Saturday...I had him touch me. I will be purchasing a lottery ticket before I wash...

In an early morning accident, Dave Warren had a scary nitrous explosion in the water box. There were no serious injuries.

06.03.00 OK, the video is posted HERE. it may not play the usual way, as it will probably down load before opening. HiRez version and that bug fixed tomorrow nite or Monday morning.

Pro Mods SPECTACULAR at MRP...In today's third session of Pro Mod qualifying, Danny Rowe took his blown alcohol 1938 Chevrolet to a new Mission Raceway Park Pro Mod track record with a fantastic 6.329. His 219.51mph speed was topped by number two qualifier Glen May whose Ford Ranger ran a 6.434/220.21. Rowe will meet the 8th qualifier Bob Stevens who had a 6.83/200.22, while May's blown Ford will go up against Andy Neyer's blown Corvette who clocked a 6.739/211.76. The third driver on the list, Trevor Lowe who carded a 6.49/214.28, will meet the only nitrous vehicle who made the field, the S10 of Calgary Alberta's Glen Kerunsky who had a 6.655/208.67. Wayner Torkelson Jr. was number four at a 6.53/210.57 and will race Richard Cross in round one after the Oregon driver qualified fifth with a 6.601/211.01.

So it's a stout all six second/200mph field that does not include drivers such as John Scialpi who blew the tires off the Wappado Chevy on every attempt down the course today...the final time in wild style. Fotos and notes to come...

06.02.00 WOW...HH today on Bro' Jake's ROCK101 morning program! Thanks guyz!

Another of those now infamous wet coast days....rain/sun/rain/sun/rain/sun/rain/sun/rain/go home. A giant turnout of High School cars, some awesome feature vehicles, and a massive bunch of people...who ALL sat around waiting for it to stop raining. Sure enough when they called it about 2pm it was hot, sunny and dry within an hour, but what do you do? It was a heart breaking turn-of-events for all the young crowd, some of whom had come from as far away as Saskatchewan. It's been rescheduled for June 16th, but there's no way they'll duplicate what this one could have been. Damn our weather! we've lost so much to it over the past couple of years I can't believe it.

A decent field of Pro Mods already on site include: Trevor Lowe in his aging, but still potent mini '57 Chevy, Glen May in his first MRP competitive outing with the '99 Cranberry Connection Ranger Pickup, Wayne Torkelson's very quick baby T-Bird, Danny Rowe's Boise winning '38 Chevy, John Scialpi's famous Wappado '57 Chevrolet, the '38 Chevy of Oregon's Richard Cross, Andy Neyer's '94 Corvette, Calgary's Glen Kerunsky and his cool S10 truck, and a first time Mission visit for Rob Stevens' 38 Chev. Word is Kuhns got the Corvette repaired but was unable to assemble the engine in time, and no Pat Stoken in the cool, cool '69 Camaro who also suffered engine problems. We're still holding out for Dennis Radford's Killer Instinct Mopar and possibly Vern Mills, maybe even Joe Delehay, and who knows if the Shelby of Keith Korecki may show. All-in-all it will be probably the quickest show ever for the door cars on the west coast. I know they all run three times tomorrow (I believe) at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm.

The addition of the local Doorslammer show makes a good race an great one. Glen Braid is here, as is Don Murray (with a BUNCH of changes) who hopes to be in the 7.80s, the Mopac turbo car, Tom Maheden's Baretta from Alberta and a whole bunch more. I got a chance to sit down and talk with Terry Spargo for the first time today. Many of you have viewed the video of his all steel ton and a half big block Camaro here on HH. He has hopefully solved a nitrous delivery gremlin and along with crew guy Jake have their fingers crossed for a seven second pass first thing tomorrow. I hear that Roy Moznik will not be here, readying his shoebox for the big street car showdown next weekend. Bob MacDonald is back with his amazing blown three window. Also in the pits already is a pair of blown alky dragsters (Bobby Hafner and Leo Grocock) and Mike Giuliani's Federal Mogul Funny Car...and this was at 7pm Friday night! You can bet there will be even more tomorrow.

After seeing how much stickum George has layed down out there today, and the shaved lanes out past the sixty foot mark, AND the perfect weather prediction, we have all the makings for a door car show unlike anything we've ever seen around here. If you're sitting around thinking about coming out, just do it baby, just DO IT!

Nice to see MRP race director Wally Duperon recovered from a recent illness and back at the track!

ATTN ALBERTA: My plans to be in Edmonton have fallen through due to family illness with the people who were to give me a ride and help out with expenses. Sorry again Alberta, one of these days I'm gonna make it out there.

A QUESTION: We received a panthlet in the mail about the upcoming Mission FMDRS and I see that Pro will be run run there. So what happens to Top Comp when they don't qualify (with electronics)? They will have to remove their electronics if they want to go in Pro?

06.01.00 Finally got around to taking care of my biggest sponsor...Glen Braid and his Whats4Free.com car. Although you may have seen some of it already, here is both a HISPEED and 28k video file from the MRP Federal-Mogul featuring all the runs (including that amazing 'Birthday' burnout), the party, and a bunch more stuff. BTW, the team will be out at Mission this weekend.

Click HERE for Glen Braid's Pro streeter for HiSpeed connections

Click HERE for Glen Braid's Pro streeter for 28.8 connections

With the weather looking good, it should be a great weekend of racing out at MRP. I did call the track for details, but got the answering machine...so here's what I have from my 'other' sources, hope it's correct: Tomorrow (Friday) is High School drags , and no track rental....BUT I do hear a number of Pro Mods will be there testing. Names include Trevor Lowe, Glen May, Wayne Torkelson and maybe a few more. I have no idea what time or how much, but if you cruise out there about noon, it could be a decent afternoon. As for Saturday and Sunday I also understand the Doorslammer show that was rained out last week WILL be re-run, providing a major bonus. I'll go out on a limb and predict low, low 6.40s from the quick guys, so get yer butts out there, but if you don't make it, I hope to have video up....sometime.

And since I'm on the subject (and a number of people have asked me), I'm sorry, but I have no idea why the MRP website is currently not being updated on any kind of regular basis. There is obviously some kind of problem, but I have many, much more pressing things too keep myself busy...

Also a BIG thank you to Mickey Beadle and his people at Evergreen Speedway for continued work on their posters. This weekend see's the biggest oval race in the Northwest when the Craftsman Trucks come to town. For complete info go to their website at www.evergreenspeedway.com LP.
