09.30.00 Action, action, action at Mission Saturday as a late start resulted in a wild day of racing that saw Legend Aero team member Todd Sims crowned Northwest Super Street champ for the second year in-a-row and the third time in his career. Congrats also to Dave Richardson who won the winner-take-all $2000-to-win TCS Shootout in Canada West Doorslammer action. Belated congrats to Mike Seekens for winning the Northwest Super Comp crown again for the year 2000 a few weeks ago at Woodburn.
Then there was the famous Mission starting line showing it's teeth as Dave Warren demonstrated in spectacular style:

Larry,
Just a note to say that VTV News Welcome to Vancouver
Television is doing a series this week about street
racing and drag racing. Watch the news at 6, it's suppose
to be on at 6:30 each night this week, about the kids
that street race, and us real drag racers. -Vicki Strell
EXCLUSIVE HH Medford Federal-Mogul FotoSPECTACULAR here

Got in late last night from six days on the road to the end of the NHRA D6 rainbow in Medford. You can get all the official results on the NHRA site HERE, but there are a couple of things we can ad, such as the points battles.
We already know Mark Hentges captured his first ever Federal-Mogul Dragster title in fine form, winning the race, setting both ends of the track record, and taking out three nitro cars in succession. An interesting sidenote was that Dale Carlson was here doing the clutch duties on Duane Shields' car. Going into Sunday's eliminations it was know that to win the championship Hentges would have to do no worse than runner-up. With the quality of cars here the math showed Carlson (currently without a car) had a chance (if he could win both Vegas and Phoenix). Rumor was that if Hentges fell early here, Dale would be in Shield's backup car in a couple of weeks at The Strip. "I've had a long enough break" said the Giant Bicycle dealer, on his way to a bike convention in Las Vegas. Look for him to be back behind the wheel of 'something' soon.
In FMFC it appears Pat Austin has the edge over Russ Parker, but the current tally is not available to me at this time.
In Comp the deal is done with Brian Hyerstay taking the division over Jeff Lane.
With the runner-up finish in Super Stock it looks like Steve Wann is in the driver's seat, but Gary Rouse may have a chance with one or two of the D7 races. Wann's attempt at a rare divisional-double fell one round short at Medford as he won Stock, an amazing accomplishment.
Stock is another too close for us to call without defiant numbers. Jody Lang leads Don Little while third place Gary Waldo was not here.
In Super Comp Dick Vandermeer (also not at this race) still has the lead, but a number of drivers may have a chance to catch him. Again, the difficult to figure, as the 'out-of-division' schedule does not allow my little mind to comprehend the possible outcome.
Super Comp points leader John Peterson was runner-up here, while Mark Cavar went a number of rounds. One more time, the remaining two events may well decide this one.
Super Street too is not a done deal as far as I can tell. Tom Williams did go rounds at Medford, but again without official numbers we simply do not know how the points stack up.
Pro Sportsman Motorcycle was captured by Brian Hudson, who not only won the race, but I believe the division as well. The veteran rider also defended his 'King Of The Coast' title when he defeated Mike Scott in the Div 6 vs. Div 7 race-within-a-race on Saturday.
Oh ya...Top Comp. In the words of race and division runner-up We Garvin III: "Anyone who says Top Comp isn't competitive is going to have to eat crow!! Down to the last race of the year in the last round to decide the Champion... now that's racing!" I must agree as it was about as exciting a competition as I have ever seen in this sport. Since we are lucky enough to be the only division with this great class, there would be no out-of-division confusion, we would know who the champ was at the end of the day. As eliminations went on we saw both points leader, and defending champ Mark Barnhart mow down his competition...and on the other side of the ladder Garvin was doing the same thing. It all came down to the final, a double breakout win that went to Barnhart. Yup, that purple dragster did it again, but that bitchin' altered gave him quite a run. These two guys battled it out from Ashcroft to Oregon, Boise and everywhere in between....not only congrats to both drivers, but a big thanks for giving us a show that's about as good as it gets!
On a personal note, I hate this out-of-division thing...from the point of view of somebody who tries to keep track of this stuff. To have so many classes not decided at the final division race takes away so much excitement for me. I know it's good for racers to have a chance to gain more points, but with travel expenses getting so high (especially for us Canadians) I just feel there must be a better way.
Overall it was a good event. The weather was perfect, the car count decent, the track surface outstanding, the track people friendly and hard-working,. All-in-all this writer looks forward to a return to this facility. I hope to have some video up soon, but it depends on my work load and how it goes this week.
Car Numbers: FMD 9, FMFC 7, COMP 17, SS 24, Stock 47, Top Comp 17
As you can see, a flurry of names and numbers that is so difficult to confirm and keep track of...especially when I forgot my results sheets in Rich Carlson's car...whom I must thank one more time for his help in me making it to this race.
In the meantime, take a'lil surf over to the official track site, and check out the many great images of webmaster and all-around-cool-dude Don Ewald HERE. Oh ya, one final thing. A major large hello to Ma Green, a drag racing lady of the first order, and easily the most fun-luvin human on site this weekend!
Once again, wish I could post more of the stuff I have along with what so many of you send me, but I gotta pay those bills eh...LP
FIREBIRD THUNDERFEST RESULTS
Thought weıd send along a short resultıs brief from the Pennzoil/Jacksons Thunderfest this past Saturday night at Firebird. FYI-our website has been put on temporary hold in consideration of our webmaster Tomi Schaefer (of Tri-S Creative Graphics) who recently injured her lower back at homequite seriously, so firebirdonline.com will not be updated as frequently as normal. For those who know Tomi (a tremendous supporter of northwest drag racing over the past two decades) and would like to send get well wishes, her e-mail address is: tri-s@interplus.net
Thunderfest was a bonifide hit. An event record crowd and a terrific turnout of racers saw Kirk Kuhns run 6.56, 6.55 (in legal PM trim) and a final round 6.46-215.72 (with the blower turned up a notch) to defeat Trevor Lowe in the "Outlaw" Pro Mod War to Settle the Score. Lowe ran 6.54-212.76 in the final, after runs of 6.62 and 6.54 in the Chicago Style shootout, which also included John Scialpi (6.65) and Richard Cross (6.83). Guess you could say, "Gold Medal-Team USA", "Silver-Team Canada".
Texan Ancel Horton ran 5.31, 5.31 and 5.31 at a best of 298 with the "Mississippi Madman" ride, but Chuck Haynes was fastest at 299.00 with his "Volcano". The King of Street slugfest went to the wild nitrous ı67 Chevy II of Tim Ketlinski who downed Paul Brownıs big-inched Monte Carlo. After a first round nail-biter when both cars carded identical 7.88ıs on street treads, Ketlinski won the crown in the final with a booming 7.76-176.36.
The 3rd Annual Super Cop Speedfest attracted 9 cars and Edmontonıs Mike Wynnyk won his first title at 10.96-111.67 with his ı72 Duster over Ron Kirtleyıs local Camaro, who ran 10.13-131.21. Other winners included: Wade Hansen (SP), Judy Radford (PRO), Paul Nicolosi (NOST), Dustin Stephenson (SM), Chris Kasel (PSB), and Dennis Radford (Match Race).
next up: Halloween Classic VII on October 18th-22nd. Event brochures available now by contacting: race@firebirdonline.com.
Thanksfrom your friends in western Idaho.
Anytime you guys. We'll post anything we get from the
New Crew until Tomi is back on track. LP
Larry, I know that you are not a free advertiser
but I thought I'd drop you a line.I have always had a
hard time getting Hoosier tires locally and wondered why.
The answer was simple, no dealer distributers in B.C except
on the island. While at the Prolong Nats I secured a deal
with Hoosier to become the dealer distributer for B.C.
As this is a home based buisness along with BCR products, the
overhead is very low. I will pass along the lowest prices
for these tires and will stock the more popular sizes.
Thanks Greg Henderson.
I hate it when this happens...

Drag Racing List NEWS FLASH!
September 16, 2000 (Columbus, Ohio)
Bill Kuhlmann reset the doorslammer world records Saturday with an UNGODLY 6.001 run at 234.41 mph at the Super Chevy Series race at Columbus, Ohio! DRL Executive Field Editor Bret Kepner called with the news. Bill ran the time in 64 degree weather. Jim Nordhougen unfortunately burned his Nitro Fish car to the ground; the resultant cleanup prevented Bill from attempting to back up the run and possibly take the Summit Racing Corvette into the five-second zone! Bret reports that the run was squirrelly on the top end, and that had it gone straight, would almost certainly have been a five. The event will continue tomorrow, but temperature predictions in the low to mid seventies will provide somewhat less than optimal atmospheric conditions for a five second run. Congratulations to our old friend Bill Kuhlmann and the entire team of the Summit Racing Chevrolet Corvette! We hope to have a full story in a day or so.

Drag Racing List News Flash
Kuhlmann Backs up 6.00, but no Fives September 17
(Columbus, Ohio) DRL Executive Field Editor Bret Kepner called today with a follow-up to Bill Kuhlmann's world-rocking performance at Super Chevy Columbus yesterday. In today's action, Kuhlmann lined up his Summit Racing '68 Corvette Nitro Coupe in round one and shot to a 6.06 at only 210 mph! The eighth mile times on the run were quicker and faster than on yesterday's 6.00 at 234 (3.90, 190, compared to yesterday's 3.92, 189), but the Summit Racing Corvette couldn't hold it together for the five. Round two produced an outstanding (albeit now disappointing) 6.12 at 229 mph. In the final, tire shake set in and held the Summit Corvette to a 6.30. Needless to say, the entire drag racing world will be focused on the next Super Chevy Series race, October 6-8 at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Hey, but the locals wanna know what happened at Eagle today...especially in Top Comp
TOP COMP More than a couple of Top Comp teams were surprised to see Team Idaho already in the pits when most arrived on Friday. Points leader, and defending champ Mark Barnhart, along with Rod Langley and Tom Elliot made the big tow from the the spot most consider the birthplace of the class, Boise. When the smoke cleared, and the havoc ceased another B.C. door car emerged atop the Top Comp contingent here today at this NHRA National Open as Rob Murphy claimed his first ever Oscar.

The Hope, B.C. driver ran a .562/7.991/162.89 in his short, huffed, Hemi Daytona to defeat Calmar Alberta hitter Terry Cameron. The '92 Hadman dragster with the big carbed Chevy ran a .542/7.988/159.23 on a 7.45 dial. I never did get a solid number for the class, but hear it was one car short so had one round points taken away. Although I did not get this fact confirmed.
Murphy took out top qualifier Marty Zazulla in round two, and Wes Garvin in the semis. Also in the second round Cameron shocked Barnhart with a .528/7.478 on a .45 to the purple Soran car's .516/7.730 on a .74! Mark Campbell continued the Great Alberta Idaho Dragster Slaughter of ohoh defeating Langley in round two while Elliot had the bye before running up against Cameron in the semis...this after a bunch of oil leak-plagued runs for the Idaho driver. A lot of time was spent under that pretty green car this weekend. Cameron then took out Campbell in the first semi, while Murphy idled the Nutralife Dodge thru the beams.
Driver not hurt in wild run during qualifying

Jay Syvertsen was not injured, though bruised, when the
Mopac Nova went waaaaay off the end in Saturday afternoon's
second session.
Other winners today included:
Stock Super Stock Combo. "It's about fucking time I got one of these....and you can quote me", smiled a happy Shawn Kvaas It was awhile coming for the Pitt Meadows, B.C. driver, a win that saw a highly entertaining matchup of team-mates Kvass and Glen Rogers in Terry Wies' blue 78 Firebird in semi final action. The head's up K/SA race was neat with a .535/12.397 from the grey car to a .617/12.402 for Rogers. Runner-Up Dwight Deausy in his GT/FA Olds logged a .582/10.821 on a .76 as he watched the second generation drag racer captured his biggest ever win with a .572/12.411 on his 12.35 dial. Wayne Darby in Buck's car exactly as it was but for small white driver name lettering on the window, was also very cool.
Super Street The second Wally of his career, the second in just one year. Courtenay British Columbia's Craig Bickle captured the series Super Street title with a win here today. On an 11.04 number the Vancouver Island Camaro took out Knight's neat Mopar, Ronny Mac, then Richardson Jr.before a .520/11.00 was fine as runner-up Mark Downing suffered a .321 red.
Super Gas Alberta wins the 10.02 class when Eddy Plazir in his beautiful '48 Anglia parlays a .405 light and a 10.018 to a win over Oak Harbour Washington's Steve Ellis in his Star Fighter Corvette at .441/10.007.
Super Comp A very neat 9.01 class final as Mike Pople is ALL grins after his win over the way cool 2000 Prowler roadster of Vernon's Ken Micky. The white '98 Undercover dragster left second .435 to a .416 from the fenderless purple Plymouth. At the stripe it was the North Delta dragster at 9.053 to Mickey's 9.160.
Junior Dragster As the flanks of his gorgeous dragster were adorned with FOR SALE in shoepolish, Maple Ridge driver Josh Mellof came from the fourth qualifying spot to defeat Tory McLellan of Calgary. Melof's .585 reaction time was good, but his run of 15.937 on a .93 dial was more than McLellan's 9.253 on a .18 could handle.
Super Pro The small block dragster from Revelstoke of driver Ed Maaskant won with a .514/9.029 on a 9.01against the '69 Nova of Mike Hutmocher from Courtenay who had a .540/11.030 on an ohtwo! It was maybe the best day in decades for Van Isle cars in divisional competition.
Pro Dave Jung of Richmond took his '82 Camaro to the win with a .568/13.586 on an 11.30 as runner-up Don Thiessen had his '75 Duster on a run of .444/12.395 with his 12.34 dial.
Sportsman Brad Potter captured a 'Barbie' (Dsixer's name for the clear trophy the victor is awarded in this and a few other classes) as his familiar '70 Trans Am (it's not an original one...hence the accumulating amount of rust which often totally freaks out T/A buffs) goes .538/12.775 on his .80 to defeat the new Division Champ Chris Brandt of Custer Washington who carded a .506/13.085 breakout on his 13.18.
High School From just around the hill over at Merritt Secondary, Chris Campbell took the 454, '74 Firebird to a final round .678/13.760 on a .71 number. Runner -up, William Friend from Westside took their '68 Camaro with a .465/12.62 on a .59. Hmmm Firebirds win three times today too...
Snow Bike In the most heartfelt final of the day, J. Glenn Miller won one for everybody here. On a day which began with a memorial parade for Jessica Cook, her friend Glenn beat a sled in the final. Chad Rebel from Kelowna ran a .493/9.902 on a .92 with his '98 Artic Cat as the familiar number 61 89 GSXR of Miller hands out a .505/9.901 on his .87 dial.

Mission CMDRA Final to be run Monday due to two days of rainouts this weekend.
Firebird Rocks Bracket Finals
NHRA Summit Racing Series
NHRA Northwest Division Woodburn Dragstrip, Woodburn,
Ore.
Sunday, September 10, 2000
The NHRA Summit Racing Series Finals in NHRA's Northwest Division are run a little differently to those in the six other geographic regions. In the Northwest each participating track enters four drivers in the Super Pro, Pro, and Sportsman categories, and two riders in the Motorcycle category, for a total of 14 racers from each track. The winning racers in each of the above four categories, which are run during Saturday's action, earn the gold card, the division title and, new for 2000, a trip to Pomona Raceway to contest the Summit Racing Series National Championship. NHRA Northwest Division Director Chris Blair explained why the race is run a little differently to most. "The track operators wanted a way to reward those racers who have supported their local track through the year, and this was the best solution. The only drivers that qualify for Saturday's race are those that have been to their local track week in and week out and scored enough points to be among those top four drivers." Mark Faul, one of the Northwest's top Stock and Super Stock drivers, and who was racing his father's '55 Chevy in competition for Firebird Raceway in Boise, supported the event format. "I think it's great. The only way you can run for the gold card and now with the national championship is to make sure you go to your local track each week. Personally, I'd like a shot at that national title and I'll be trying to make my team next year. That [Summit National Championship] is a pretty neat deal." Blair added, "This format also eliminates the possibility of a driver just attending one or two events during the season at their local track and then winning the divisional title." Once individual titles have been decided Saturday, the attention switches to the prestigious team championship Sunday. Drivers still chase individual event titles, but all in the name of scoring points for their home track.
Claiming individual titles Sunday were John Marvin, Robert Steffen, Robert Classen, and Joe Collette. Marvin, representing Lost Creek Raceway, defeated Firebird Raceway's David Martin for the Super Pro title. In an all-Seattle International Raceway bout, Steffen defeated a red-lighting Jody Lang in the final of Pro. Bremerton Raceway's Jerry Biscay couldn't hold off Portland International Raceway's Classen in the final of Sportsman. And in Motorcycle Butch Cook of Coos Bay International Speedway put a .427 light on Collette but couldn't stop the Firebird Raceway rider scoring a victory.
The Team Championship title went to Boise, Idaho's Firebird Raceway. Team captain and track manager Scott New said winning the title was the highlight of the racing season. "Drag racing is such an individual sport - there's not much you can do with a team - but the Summit Racing Finals provide one of those rare opportunities when a team concept works," said New. "Winning the team title is a testament to all the great racers that have supported Firebird Raceway. We've been a part of this program since it started in 1978 and we've been fortunate enough to win the title a couple of times in the past, but not in a long time. This is the greatest." The final team championship results:
1. Firebird Raceway 76 points
2. Portland International Raceway 65
3. Woodburn Dragstrip 59
4. Bremerton Raceway 56
5. Seattle International Raceway 51
6. Coos Bay International Speedway 40
7. Renegade Raceway 38
8. Mission Raceway Park 34
9. Southern Oregon Dragway 32
10.Madras Raceway Park 31
11.Lost Creek Raceway 26
12.Nl'Akapxm Eagle Motorplex 23
13.High Desert Motorsports Park 14

Larry: Just heard from Woodburn ET Finals, Damien Giddens just won The Race of Champions for S/P today Saturday. CONGRATULATION DAMIEN, Just thought I would pass on the update -Barb Mercer
Just completed the longest, wettest motorsport event I have ever experienced since the opening race of the Players Challenge at Westwood many moons ago. After a glorious sunny night at the drive-in on Friday, Saturday saw rain fall all day and night. Despite the ugly conditions thousands of vehicles and tens of thousands of spectators made this one for the record books. To have this many people come out in these conditions, even on the wet coast, was simply unbelievable.
I still do not know when I can updates all the stuff I should...sorry.

Looking back at the calendar and I can basically point out where things began to slip around here. I can remember returning home from a total drag racing experience at the Nightfire Nationals in Boise, taking a few days off to recover and never quite getting back on track...to this day. Next up in 1999 was a car cruise just around the corner from where I live. I got the job to do a video of it. Not having done a 'street' video for a few years I felt the time was right. Little did I know the phenomenon the Langley Goodtimes Cruise-In would become. That video became my biggest seller ever, and took up most of my waking hours for about three months. The effect on the HH99 video was huge...then came the computer problems of last winter, then the move in April. All through it I was promising people stuff I honestly thought I could deliver on, but in many cases they are still waiting or have moved on to others. I can hardly blame them.
Now here we are nearing the end of the drag racing season, and a week today is the 2000 Langley Goodtimes Cruise-In, that promises to be even bigger and better than the last one. I am doing a video of it one more time, probably the final one as these things usually have a short life span. This time I am much more prepared. HH2000? I just don't know right now, as other than the dozens of client videos that must be produced, I am doing large video projects for the Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street Associations as well as major works for POS Racing and Legend Aero, not to mention a few for Chris Blair for the NHRA Div. 6 Banquet. In other words, the next couple of months are full.
One thing that will continue due to this is the slow, but steady decline of this website. Of all the stuff I do, this is by far my favorite, but it is also by far the one I cannot find any way to make enough money on to make it work. This entire week has seen me logging videos along with assembling a major photo essay of last week's FMDRS in Yakima. With an event every weekend from now to the end of October it's going to be a major undertaking to get everything done. Now I hope the many who have sent in link requests, cool photos, etc. can understand why it often takes me so long to reply or post stuff.
I do not seem to be along here as it's obvious the other two local sites are also not posting as often as we all used to. The Grapevine and Bob Wilson's Northern Thunder News are basically going thru the same thing as HH is. Does this mean the local web scene is gradually dying. I don't honestly know. Somebody recently informed me that the Internet just passed a major milestone. There are now more web sites going away than there are coming on line. Obviously this had to happen sooner or later, and the fact that 'basic' graphic sites such as this one pale in comparison to the Flash-draped multimedia giants shows how dated it really is. Our hit count is about half what it was a few months ago, which was less than it was a year ago when updates were almost daily, proving that the secret of this media is constant new information. That takes time and time is money. Web sites take lots of time, and that means lots of money either made or lost. I am very confident in the fact if it was all I did, I could produce a drag racing web site that could rival anything out there, but I can't find anyone remotely interested in the five figures it would cost each year to do. When you look at what some companies spend on advertising in other drag racing media (print, television, etc.) then see how lame their sites are I wonder if this thing called the web is worth the effort. Whatever, once again I'll be looking for a real job this winter, and if I don't find one I'll be back probably doing more video stuff than web stuff. Bummer. LP
