A field of 26 Pro Mods ran at Indy today trying to qualify for the stout eight car show. With a bump of 6.36 after just the first session we wonder how the west coast dudes will do at Mission this weekend. Weather conditions both here and there are ideal for go fast numbers. We hope to post something tomorrow evening.

The streeters will be out in force as well at MRP with the six second barrier in serious jeopardy. A good number of runners have a legit chance at the mark, as do a certain pair of five litre Mustangs who should be in the sevens...if not tonight even at the street race. (Like the way I call a 'drag race' a 'street race'...)

Back at Indy the race for the pureists is already done with the Hemi Shootout in the books as of this evening. Check dragracecentral.com for complete results....for as of this posting nhra.com has nothing up. Speaking of that kinda stuff we understand Woodburn's very own Jon Adams is reporting for the Fast News Network. Could be the start of something very big for one of the brightest lights in the northwest.

From a new drag site comes this little Indy Pro Mod diddy: "Carl Speiring tows in, all the way from Canada (without an invite), He made it onto the grounds only to be REMOVED by the Sheriff!" Check out DaPreacher.com for this and more totally outrageous drag news.

First few HHY2k+1 reviews have come in. All positive so far with this one my favorite:

Just received the new tape this morning. All I can say is PHENOMENAL.
Man you outdid yourself on this tape. I couldn't peel myself away from it. And that was on a small 13" TV at the shop. Can't wait to take it home and watch on my big TV.
Keep up the good work bud and anyone that does not buy this doesn't know what thay are missing.

Top Comp World Finals feedback:
Hello Larry,
Outstanding news on the T/C world finals! It is really a morale booster
for us Top Compers to see all of the support this year. From you presenting this event, your coverage of the racing action, Mike Rice finding us contingency sponsors, and the continued support from Chris Blair. Hopefully between Devey, Weiss, and myself, we make this a close championship battle to the end!

And yes, I'll try to find the time to clean up the size of this page real soon.

Yakima Lucas coverage has been delayed until next week due to some video projects that must be completed by this weekend.

Now for all you zany folks who have ever fantasized about putting a BIG engine in your street car I present this. I won't say who sent it or from where it came as I just know some gonzo tech-type would blow a gasket and try to hunt this guy down....caution BIG jpeg file. I do thank the sender however as this image dropped my bottom jaw all the way to the floor. The caption reads as follows:
Larry,
Thought you might find this interesting?! 727 and TA/FC engine, 3000 pound car not a good idea. At launch a piece of the drive shell went thru the trans shield, deflected off of the side bar and flew 200 feet over the grandstand. Best news is the driver has a sore foot, and no one else was injured.

As we boil though the promotional period of a new video, once again da site takes a bit of a back seat. As you can see however we have been busy in the background.

Island News
HI. Larry follow up about Toms crash. My name is Keith Thompson I've been racing with Tom this year I also did the body work and paint on the car and was on the start line on his final pass. I managed to get a video of the car up to the first time it rolled...then it rolled at least four more times destroying most of the car. The motor looks ok, the trans is fine and the rear end is bent at one end. The body is destroyed except for the doors the hood and the trunk lid. The main part of the car where Tom was seated is in very good shape, a testament to Tom's ability as a car builder. The crash happened a about 130 to 140 mph. There is good reason for NHRA's safety rules as the car did it's job and Tom walked away because it was built to their specs. It will be displayed at the Reunion in Victoria on the 13th 14th and 15th. The drag racing community has shown what they are made of, as people have been very generous with donations of cash and the offer of parts and other support. A big thanks to them all. I'll keep in touch with more info. -Keith

Hi Larry
Many of your Horsepower Heaven followers have heard by now that one of the Islands coolest racers was totalled as a result of a mishap at the Alberni drags.
Ladysmith's Tom Stockhausen built a bad big block powered Studebaker and was running strong all weekend. Unfortunately, an as yet undetermined mechanical failure caused the car to go out of control and crash, leaving the car wrecked and Tom a bit sore.
This was a very bad crash, and Toms survivability is a true testament to the NHRA safety rules, and of course, to Tom's ability to build a safe race car. I'm told that although most of the tubing was bent, not one weld came apart, and the cage did its job.
Tom's car was to be featured in the San Cobble/Van Isle Reunion. Being the true grit guy he is, Tom has asked us if he can still put the wrecked car in the show. This is not for bragging rights, he just wants to show us all that the safety rules work and that the local guys can build a safe car.
Tom's car remains in our show and he will be on hand to answer questions.

San Cobble/Van Isle Reunion

Hi Larry, glad to see you have the video done and are back keeping HH alive and up to date. I guess we will be seeing you at the reunion?? We will have the car (Beach City Corvette Alky Funny Car) there as it now has the honour of being the first car to run 200+ on the island or so the old guys say. I am still questioning that but the fuel guys back then [Ruth et al ] were limited to 600 - 800 ft passes and they apparently never got over about 180. -Leon Aines

HH will most defiantly be at the Van Isle Reunion which is looked forward to as one of our top events of the year. That's kinda Cool Leon, we'll find out for sure when I maybe put the question to 'The King' at the Reunion. That should be interesting eh?

Champions crowned at Woodburn Dragstrip
Woodburn Dragstrip, Woodburn Oregon - Five drivers earned titles
in Woodburn Dragstrip's 19-race VP Racing Fuels Championship
Series, including 19-year-old Julie Merritt, who became just the
second woman to win a season title at the Woodburn Dragstrip.
Merritt, of Oregon City, Ore., earned her first track
championship in the Super Pro category, Woodburn's premier racing
division. Merritt won two events behind the wheel of her 135 mph
1963 Chevy Nova.
In the Pro division, Dave Flett of Tillamook, Ore., won his
first-ever track championship. Pro is the largest category at the
Woodburn Dragstrip, with more than 80 racers competing at each
event. Flett won three races in 2002, and was runner-up at
another. Consistent late round finishes helped Flett secure the
title, as he lost in the first round just once during the season.
Dave Wilson of Vancouver, Wash., won the track championship in
Sportsman. Wilson came into the season's final race on August 25,
in second place behind Derrick Jackson. In the semi-finals,
Wilson and Jackson and went head-to-head knowing that the winner
of that round would be the season champion. Wilson won the round
by just 15 thousandths of a second, securing his first
championship at Woodburn. Wilson went on to win the final event,
giving him two wins in four final round appearances.
Mark Kosler of Keizer, Ore., won the Motorcycle championship
for the second time. His six wins and nine final round finishes
were the most of any driver at Woodburn in 2002. Kosler won his
first track championship in 1999.
Ryan Miller, a student at South Salem (Ore.) High School, won
the High School championship in his first year of racing. Miller,
who is 16, dethroned two time High School champ Kyle Saucy of
Beavercreek, who finished second. Miller had three wins and a
runner-up during the five race series.
The Woodburn Dragstrip has been hosting NHRA Championship Drag
Racing events since 1961.

Pro Confusion
It looks like Murray and Lane may well grab a bunch of press from next week's Pro Mod/Pro Street show at MRP this Saturday and Sunday as both are reported to be shooting for the sixes at 200. The Pro Street race at the Yakima Lucas is still on...I think.

From this afternoon: The Pro Street portion of this weekend's Super Chevy Show at Pacific Raceways has apparently been cancelled. HH has learned of this second hand, so it must be considered unoffical. We will attempt to get more info if possible.

Bad guys not only on the coast
Hey Larry. If you have a chance, perhaps you could let your followers know that the bad guys are alive and well in Alberta too.

Our trailer was broken into on Monday night, and the bad guys made off with my /20 nitro rated, fire suit / jacket / pants/ helmet / gloves, , belevalclava, boots ect. . Also taken was our lap top computer, weather station, team uniforms, many tools and many parts. The funny car was at our race shop so it lived through the robbery.

They did a real nice number on my old ' Burban which was hooked to the trailer. Seemed they couldn't get it to fire... so they made it pay...........

The stuff can all be replaced. It's just stuff. But it's OUR stuff, and........... man ..................this JUST SUX!.......................... The worst part is I had a good luck pendent in the fire suit pocket,................... that my wife gave me A LONG TIME AGO! It's been with me for every pass I have made in the last 18 years.

We have a booking at Saskatoon this coming up weekend, and folks have been coming out of the wood work to get us up and running for the tracks big Alky funny race. Thanks to all those who have helped out. I may look like a patchwork quilt out there, but the Prospector WILL be running, and running well despite the bad guys best efforts!

p.s........ Dear Bad guys....... should you happen to show up in a night club or elsewhere, wearing one of our crews uniforms........ well, ..................it's at your own risk............ my crew guys REALLY miss them.

Thanks again Larry!

The NHRA Summit Sport Compact Drag Racing Series came to Division 6 for the first time ever, as the Lucas Oil NHRA Sport Compact
Nationals were held at Woodburn Dragstrip on August 17 & 18.
Summit Racing teammates John Lingenfelter and Matt Scranton each
claimed their first NHRA Sport Compact titles with wins in Pro and
Modified, respectively. Lingenfelter ran within .01-second of the
Pro e.t. record in the first round, blasting the Woodburn quarter-
mile with a 7.19. Scranton, meanwhile, became the first Modified
racer to run in the 7-second zone and lowered the e.t. record into
the 7.80's.
In the ET ranks, Woodburn regulars Derrick Jackson and Rene
Crunelle claimed Wallys. Jackson is the current points leader in
Sportsman, while Crunelle is 5th in Super Pro. Super Pro points
leader Julie Merritt was runner-up to Jackson.
For complete results check out www.nhrasportcompact.com or

Van Isle Reunion
Plans for the San Cobble/Van Isle Reunion, being held in Victoria during the September 13th to 15th weekend, are progressing well. The event includes a car show featuring drag race cars from the 60's through to the 90's, a reception where all the old racers, crew members, sponsors and fans can reunite, and a banquet and dance.

Our special events include a bench race session hosted by Horsepower Heaven's Larry Pfister and featuring drivers Gary Beck, Jerry Ruth, Dick Kalivoda and Jack Williams along with legendary track promoter Herb McNutt. Some of the local drivers from the early days will also take part. We are pleased to have the Horsepower Heaven Practice Tree Nationals at the Reunion, and are hoping for a final round between Beck and Ruth. We will provide reserved parking for our out of town guests who are bringing their street rods to the event. The car show is almost full, but if you have a dragster with some interesting history, give me a call and we'll do our best to get your car in the show. There is no entry fee for show cars and there are no awards.

Tickets are on sale and are going fast so suggest you purchase now. We will reserve your tickets, as long as your reservation includes a cheque to follow. Ticket information can be found on our web site at www.vanisledragways.com http://www.vanisledragways.com, by e-mail to me at argond@shaw.ca or by calling me at (250)380-1096.

Finally, some people are wanting to know where "all the profits are going". For the record, 100% of the net proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society, Cops for Cancer "Tour de Rock" project that assists kids suffering from cancer.

HHY2K+1 IS DONE!
There is now doubt, the past few weeks have been intense around here, but through it all we are very happy to finally...at long last be able to announce that our newest full-length video production is completed and ready for distribution....well almost, please read on.

We will have enough copies done very late tonight to have a dozen at Mission this weekend, another dozen at the CMDRA race in Ashcroft, I'll have the same amount with me at Yakima Friday and Saturday, and maybe I'll get a few to Seattle for Super Chevy. Details tomorrow. Mail order and online orders will start Monday.

Now the famous HH plea...we need to sell these things like crazy. You've all heard it before, but after far too long with no money coming in while we did this thing we are in a rather desparate situation. The goal is to flog 250 of 'em by October 1.

This newest chapter of the HH saga has caused all kinds of thoughts to go through this thick skull. At the top of the list is why the hell I spend so much time on this damn website and get comparitively nothing for it. This is once again your opportunity to force those thoughts out of mind, but believe me when I say once again that this site is on very shakey ground at the moment. We will DEFINATELY finish out the year, but beyond that it all comes down to the sales of this video. With the disaster our client tape project has become in 2002 that particular aspect of our business is in shambles. Yes, it can be saved...and will be over the next few months, but it's obvious doing separate tapes for dozens of people is far more insane than doing one tape for hundreds.

HHY2k+1 is a drag racing tape that I flat guarantee regular visitors to this site will love. We somehow have a feeling for this sport that allows us to present drag racing in a way very few others do. This tape will make you shout out loud (as it did at a private pre-release showing), it will make you think out loud, it may even cause you to shead a tear. It's the most powerful thing we've ever done.

We now embark on an extensive publicity campaign with print media, online sites, etc. etc. etc. Just something else to take up our time eh?

Like I say, it's been a rather intense few weeks...but we are up-beat, all set to get back to 'normal', and ready to hit it again. See ya at Renegade eh!

Now for the news...unfortunately it's not all good

Just a note to let you guys know.
Tom Stockhausen's new car was completely destroyed yesterday in Port Alberni during qualifying for the Quick Sixteen part of the Thunder in the Valley event being held at the Port Alberni Airport.
He was on a run beside me and lost control about 900 feet. Got crossed up bad and went off the track sideways. Hit the gravel and rolled several times.
Tom is OK but the car is a total loss.
Maybe save the engine and the tranny but everything else looked to be a mess.
We took up a collection at the track and got something like 1600 bucks or so to get him started on a new car.
Hopefully we will be able to organize some kind of benefit deal over here on the island.
I will pass on any details as things progress.

Hi Larry , Eddy Plaizier here, just got back from Calgary.
Very good show and had its moments with the weather.
The guy with the Maverick, is Super Pro Racer Dave Leslie, we are both sponsored by Ace Manufacturing, out of Bittern Lake, Alberta.
I am pleased to say that Dave is fine, he was a little shook up, went to the hospital for a general check and was back to look at his car later that afternoon, we sat and chateed for a while. He knew exactly what was going on, the car veried to the right at the lites and barrel rolled 5 times on the guard rail.
The car is destroyed. Dave was in resonibly good spirits on Sunday also. We all were glad to see he was okay.
On another note John Graham as taken ill, he has been hospitalized, but was able to get a day pass to visit the racers today. We all wis him a speedy recovery.

Update: Early this past Saturday morning our fast paced racing lives came to a stand still when a good friend rolled his champion calibre race car in the lights at Calgary's Race City Motorsports Park during qualifying for the NHRA Division 6 race. We were all stunned to hear the news as accidents are few and far between at Race City and this was the second incident of the morning (Ken Mostowich, Calgary native Super Gas racer blew the body off his '99 Don Davis Corvette roadster in the lights only minutes earlier).

The racer who rolled his Super Pro '71 Maverick on Saturday during qualifying was none other than Dave Leslie, a good friend and fellow Super Pro competitor. Dave barrel- rolled his beautiful car 4-5 times at about the 1000 foot mark in the right lane when (what is still unconfirmed but highly likely) the front heim joint let go on the left side ladder bar. In one of the most frightening accidents to occur at Race City in a long time, we feared for Dave's life! The NHRA Safety Safari was rolling well before Dave cameto a stop beyond the finish line and did a tremendous job in conjunction with Race City officials to extricate him from the wreck. Dave is a little sore and while he only suffered minor bruising he was able to see his lovely wife Linda and two kids for another day!

Although the car is a write-off, the rollcage did it's job and saved another racer! Dave is a truly gifted individual and a first class racer. He attended yesterday's divisional final and remained at the track until long after the action was complete. With a great sense of humor and the support of many racing friends, he was able to endure a long day at the Park. Throughout the day, many racing friends rallied behind our popular, fallen hero (Dave is currently leading Super Pro points by a large margin and very popular amongst his peers) and raised well over $1,600 in cash and product to support him in his rebuilding efforts. A fellow racer who has a second race car has graciously donated it to Dave to allow him to continue his quest for a second NHRA Super Pro championship at Race City.

I would like to thank both Mike Rice, Division 6 Division Director, the NHRA Safety Safari, Lynn Church, Race City Race Director and all of the Race City officials on a tremendous job to keep Dave from harm in what was a very nasty racing accident. The professionalism in which the incident was handled is to be commended. As a fellow racer, I know the next time I tighten up my belts with that "extra" tug, I will feel comfortable in knowing I will be in 'good hands' should the need arise!

Hi Larry, Just a brief report on our races at Sechelt on Sunday August 18. Of the 158 cars entered this year we had a big increase in the higher horsepowered cars which really pleased the 5000 spectators. From our Street Machine Class to Exhibition cars everybody seemed to have a fun time----just the way we want it. We got started late becuase of a wiring and sensor problem and that cost us one time trial for everyone. Only two instead of three. When you have to set up and tear down all the timing eqipment, barriers, computers, and our portable tower on the same day it gets a little hairy at times. Since we can't put down any VHT on the airstrip there is very poor traction but the upside to this is very few breakdowns. If all goes the way we hope in a few years we will build our own track and not have the constraints that we run under now. For the time being most seem to enjoy our "For Fun Only" races. I hope I get to meet you in Sept. at the Van Isle Reunion.

Dear Larry,
Do you, or anyone you know , have video of the Monday completion of this year's NHRA Lucas Oil Northwest Nationals in Seattle? The ESPN program that we got here in Canada ended with the Sunday rain-out, so I am looking for Monday coverage.
Thanks !

A huge thank you to Sheryl Ogonoski for sending in a TON of great pics from the Spokane AHRA World Finals. Unfortunately there are so many I do not have the resources to repost them at the moment. I hope to in the future. The same goes out to Grant Stovel who sent in a wack of pics from the Prince George National Open. Time is money folks, and at this point I have neither.

A cool new site is http://www.1320ft.com/

UPDATE: Calgary Super Gas driver Ken Mostowich blew the body off his Corvette in the lights this morning. No injuries or detailed car damage reported. A local driver of a Maverick rolled a number of times at the top end and had to be cut out of his destroyed race car. No name given, but injuries said to be slight or none at all. More when we get it.

RECORDS FALL AT RACE CITY!!!

Brandon Johnson of Shelton, Washington, is a rookie in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series and has never raced on the quarter mile at Race City before. Tonight, against one of the best fields of Dragsters ever assembled at the Calgary speed plant, Johnson set a new track record for both Elapsed Time (ET) and speed. The 27 year old Johnson blasted through the finish lights in a remarkable 5.65 seconds at 251.11 mph.

HUTCHINGS SETS WORLD RECORD
Randy Hutchings of Calgary drove his Dodge Ram half-ton pickup to a new NHRA record in the F Truck Stock Automatic (FT/SA) class at Race City this afternoon. Hutchings demolished the old record of 12.72 seconds with a pass of 12.45 seconds, backed up by another pass of 12.47 seconds. Hutchings’ performance also made him the top qualifier in the Stock Eliminator category.

DRAG RACING continues Saturday and Sunday at Race City Motorsport Park. Spectator gates open at 9am both days with racing all day.

PLEASE NOTE: I still do not have email, and have too much other work to do before I can sit down and try to figure it out.

Wednesday August 14, 2002

As another week hits the mid-way point it's obvious I will not be going anywhere this weekend. The video has become my life and I will not stop (or do anything else) until it is done....hopefully sometime in the next five days...or so. Hindsight is easy at this point and though it was a possibly questionable move to attempt something on this scale at this time of year, it's still the one best way I can make a living. Client videos are all well and good, but collecting on them is not. Fifty different projects for fifty different clients is far worse than one project for another fifty people....but such is life around here.

For some reason I cannot do the email thing as of this posting, so if you've sent something in the past about 14 hours I do not have it yet.

NHRA is in Calgary this weekend for a Lucas and a National Open. Oh but I wanted to go, but it just didn't work out. Besides the weather report this morning is very iffy...We'll post whatever we get when we can.

Port Alberni on Vancouver Island is hosting a huge affair Saturday and Sunday, so if you're on the Island make it. For complete details check http://www.avdra.bc.ca

The Eagle Motorplex has their big mid-summer race on featuring brackets and jets at night. Always a good one, try to support them by attending.

Dear Larry,
could you post something on your site regarding the upcomming Fast
Bracket race at Bremerton this weekend? the First race is Friday and the
second is Saturday. Both races are $2,500.00 to win and you must run
10.99 or quicker. Everyone can go to the Bremerton Raceway website and
look under upcoming events to find the perticulars. Our last race was
about 20 cars short of paying for itself so we are hoping that we will
have plenty of cars this weekend. We have never met but I love your
website and check it often. The fast bracket assoc. was my idea. I
wanted to have some good races that payed well and had all the entry fee
go back to the racers. I am not independently rich and will not
subsidize this series without the support of the racers. I hear all the
time people complaining about the low payouts. Well, here is some good
races and these same racers are not showing up.
any help I would appreciate.

Best Regards: Dave Jackson

Whatever else ever happens at MRP, it's ok now. Jack ran there.

Our bike guys didn't have a great day, but really put on a HELL of a show down in Tennessee! Nothing from Spokane, or anywhere else, but e-mail is still to be checked.

Langley Loafer Oldtime Drags Photos start HERE. More captions coming if we can stay awake.

More racer stuff has been stolen recently. A drag boat & trailer last week, a tow rig this past Saturday night. Crime is running rampant around the northwest...BEWARE! Insure and alarm the hell out of everything you own if you can.

Saturday August 10, 2002

My gawd, it looks like Flyin Phil might just get his Nitro Nova finished...

Boise Nightfire Friday results are posted on http://www.firebirdonline.com Jack Harris leads a superb 15 car AA/FD field with a track record 6.13 at 220.85mph. Gary Read, driving Mike Sullivan's roadster that debuted at the Boise Lucas back in April, sits atop nine other Fuel Altereds with a 5.79/236.59. In Pro Mod, the Poison Viper of Baker City Oregon's Dennis Radford is number one with a 6.53/214.23. Check the site for more results tomorrow.

Nothing in from anywhere else including the AHRA World Finals in Spokane. Understand Edmonton is doing something this Wednesday nite, but since they switched to IHRA HH receives next to no info from there at all.

After three rounds of qualifying the AHDRA site lists Ron Houneit as number two and Dave O'Hara four at the big Bristol race. Mark Cox leads Top Fuel after an early 6.72/198 with Houneit's 6.91/20, Bill Furr third with a 6.95/197 then O'Hara's 6.96/194. Should be good tomorrow. Their site updates pretty quickly, so they will probably list the finals well before we link up later in the evening.

HH was out at MRP tonight after day one of the Langley Loafers Oldtime Drags. A regular day at the digs as far as this event goes, with a list of feature cars that is rarely promoted in advance and all the usual local street rods and such. Glen May and Trevor Lowe are are there, as are a couple of blown slingshots, Brent Murray's Untamed Fiat and the pair of big burnout prairie floppers. Big bonus is a great field of Western Canada Doorslammers on hand. We will be out there tomorrow as the rumors of a 'match race' between Strell's fueler and Jack Williams' Syndicate Scuderia digger are still 'unofficially' going around.

HHY2K+1 is now to the one hour twenty minute mark. Forty more minutes of mind-blowing action (for viewers), and mind-numbing editing (for me) to go. With no further computer crashes, it'll be done in about five days. Three ultra-rare pre copies are in the hands of critics as of tonight. Tomorrow we hear if it's any good. LP

Friday August 9, 2002

Don't ya just love it when a plan comes together....then doesn't...then after six hours of sleep in three days is back to about the point it started to come together? If I told of my latest computer 'problems' I could fill this page to the point it would crash the Telus DSL network from here to Prince George...so I won't. You can however ad me to the list of people who now own a crashed Maxtor 60Gb hard drive, and oh ya, I discovered stuff like IRQ's mean NOTHING when trying to output a video fill via Firewire on a PC...and I nearly made the mistake of getting an XP update too....oh THAT would have been FUUUUUN....

Lets' just say I KNOW the nitro cars are running in Boise as I type this up, and Mission hosts a giant Oldtime weekend, and the Sunshine Coast, and Woodburn and who knows where else. We will be home tomorrow working on the video, but Sunday we go to MRP. Why? heheheheh

Word is the Dave-Strell-restored Romeo Palamedes AA/FD 'may' do something more than just cackle. And if that's not enuf, this should give every old bugger from Nanaimo to Spuzzum wood. Jack Williams is slated to run the Syndicate Dragster. Probably just a 'squirt', but that's what I hear. It would be a shame if you only heard about afterwards, so I'm going out on a limb and tellin ya. If it don't happen, take up video and really feel like a dork.

I'm back to it. BTW, the tape is coming out even better than I had planned. Much different than any HH tape to date, I hope to have it ready for sale in a week. Then again...ask me about Tuesday.

If we get anything decent Sunday, I'll stop the compresses and post it.

One final thing. Thanks Mike Rice, that made my day...on a day I needed made!

Have a safe one this weekend eh. LP

Tuesay August 6, 2002

oh man...it's THAT day already...

Where the heck do I begin? How bout Sonoma. Ferd, wut can ya say? The dude is on some kinda roll, and if ya stuck around an listened to his online trophy thing you got to hear a....well maybe a whole new Ferd. Complimented his competition, did well to hislef...I dunno, but it sounds like the guy is maybe...just maybe getting a bit humble. Regardless, a big congrats to he n' Barb for a, so far, AWESOME season.

Speakin' o Sonoma, how 'bout that Tony dude? Castillo ROCKS to first place in Super Comp in the former ride of our friend Marty. For Don and crew......WOW! That was neat.

I listened to it live on the online broadcast, and again, later for the winner's circle interview. I could just see ole Don smilin' away in the background. A way cool deal for all involved.

PG....ok fine. Prince George. Our friend Rich Carlson is sick as a DOG. On his way to Emerg as I post this with a SEVERE case of Dhydration. Spoke to him just now an he has CANCELLED BOISE this cumin weekend. GET WELL SOON RICH!!!!Will HH B there? Ask me tomorrow...late.

Didn't get any 'official' results for the National Open at North Central, but do know Eddie Plazier took Top Comp, and locals all the rest. Good bud sent us a bunch of pics, but we don't have enuf life to redo and post right now.

Met up with biker Dave O'Hara tonite at a local burger joint. Was in his Barton 'bottled' Hemi Road Runner. Asking price is $70US. It IS F'ing unbelieveable...an should run eights. He and numero UNO AHDRA runner Houneit are off to a place called Bristol tomorrow. We hope to have updates DIRECT from their rigs. Ron currently is leading the National points, so this is not just another road trip.

Don Murray will be match racing a huffed Willys this coming weekend at MRP. http://www.dragindon.com

SOB videod Seattle.....................

Congrats on his new LUCAS sponsor too.

Braid? oh baby....dats cumin...LP

Again I apologize for the recent downtime. I urge anyone in the lower mainland of British Columbia who is considering DSL web access from the phone company or anyone else to forget it and go with cable. As bad as the cable companies are, at least their stuff works. I have used both for extended periods in two different locations and there is no comparison in terms of speed and reliability. The only reason I use Telus is because I get a company discount.

Fun in Seattle
I knew if I posted baaaad stuff, some of you would come around...

Our Seattle weekend will be one to remember for a lifetime. ESPN was with us for 3 days, we were on NHRA Today Sunday morning, the Winston Vision live at the races and the ESPN 2 show that aires Sat. Aug. 10th 3pm ET. IGOR got their attention.....Rob Harrison

Larry, since all you have got is negative info about Seattle I had to send you a note. We all had a great time - found the staff for the most part friendly and helpful. One very positive thing was the handicap shuttle being back. Bob was very impressed! They picked him up in the parking lot and delivered him anywhere he wanted to go (along with all of us if need be). The renovations to the washrooms were marvelous and for the most part the pits were cleaned up and much neater than previous years. The 'mist' certainly didn't make for a nice weekend but we certainly enjoyed ourselves!

After reading and re-reading your summary of the NW Nats, and after thinking about it for a day, I felt that I should respond. As a person who was there Thursday through Monday, I feel that I have a reasonable assessment of the 2002 version of the NW Nats. When I arrived at Pacific Raceways, there was a bit of a delay in my getting the proper credentials for the parking of my travel trailer on site. However, I attribute this to the fact that this was the first year for Jay, Jason, and Russ in their direct dealing with NHRA. (I should have contacted NHRA in the first place and I would have had no problem at all.) When NHRA was aware of my situation, they dealt with it promptly and kindly and there was no other difficulty by me with any NHRA person or security personnel.

I thought that track personnel, and Pacific Raceway staff were kind and considerate as they worked on my situation. The fact that the gates needed to be closed and admission restricted on Saturday is a testament to the fact that the community is getting the word that Pacific Raceway is an inviting place to be for motorsports action in the Northwest.

I was aware of some late night disturbance involving the riding of motorcycles or 4-wheelers through the motorhome area. On the following morning, I heard about some altercation between some of the persons who evidently had too much to drink. However, (my opinion) the fact that some people make unwise decisions, did not equate to the fact that it was a bad weekend.

I went there to serve in my capacity of RFC chaplain. In this capacity, I talk with many racers and their crew members. I heard many positive comments. In addition, in my capacity I observe many rounds of racing. I thought that the quality of racing was very good. Fields in all categories were full (except for alcohol funny car) and competetive. Traction was great. New track records were set. The times in Pro Stock is one example of how competetive the racing was. The same could be said of both alcohol classes as well. Very respectable times were recorded in both Nitro classes. I heard nothing from the racers regarding lane preference. In fact, some mentioned their delight that "the bump" had been removed. Another mentioned that there were 80 some more racers than last year, due to additional pit space. Therefore, I conclude that the racing (which is the reason that I went there) was excellent. Regarding other persons' behavior, our society is full of examples of people who would change their behavior if they had a second chance. Personally, I have no control of other persons. Therefore, I do not let them dictate my attitude toward any activity.

You mentioned that possible some suspensions or warnings would be issued. I had not heard this, but it would not be the first event where such action was required and the fact that it must happen does not diminish the quality of the event. That is why we have rules with consequences and rewards.

The one thing that was most frustrating to me was the continuing light drizzle on Sunday. Just when the track would just about be ready for more racing, the drizzle would return. And we would have to wait longer. My only consolation was the fact that this was another factor over which I had no control. I have learned that if I can't change it, I do not need to stress out over it. In life, there will be many obstacles. If we are persistant and if we are willing to do what is required, there are very few obstacles that cannot be conquered. The Serenity Prayer is a great lesson for me. It says, "God grant me the courage to change the things I can, the patience to accept the things I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference."

In conclusion, I take my hat off to all the NHRA officials, Pacific Raceway staff, drag racers, and fans for what I consider was the second best event I have ever attended at that facility. My favorite event at that facility happened in September of 1978. For me, it is more fun to be a driver!!!

Had to laugh about the articles sent in.
Not only was there last minute preparations being done on the track, they didn't even have the grandstands finished until late Thurs. night. Sawing, hammering and welding kept interrupting my quiet drinking time..... All in all, a pretty good show except for the rain. One good note was that they seemed to figure out how to fix the P.A. system so you didn't have to fill in the words that got lost on the way to the speaker. Also was happy to see that there is quite a bit more new pavement in the upper top fuel area.

One more thing I noticed was the new Sunoco fueling station just put in with modern pumps and holding tanks, gone are those ones from 1960. I don't know if NHRA brings in their own Xmas tree or not but that was one thing that seemed to have a few glitches this week, causing the finals in Pro-Stock to be re-run 1 hour after the Top Fuel and Funny Car finals were complete. There was still a lot of good racing on Monday for those who were able to return. Lastly, If you went to bed before 2:00 am and didn't get up until after 8:00 am then you aren't in mid season party form for Drag Racing.
Keep up the great reporting.
Regards, Allen

Then again:

I went back for the rain date today. I actually had a great time. Probably the best day of racing I have ever seen. The place was completely empty.

Separate from Monday, this was the least fun I have ever had at a drag race. (And I have been on fire a few times) I am not sure why I had such a terrible time, but I think you come close with too much rain and too much booze. Also, as much as I support the increase in public knowledge of the sport, the more people who come to these events, the worse they are to attend. There just are not enough physical assets to support more attendees. It was marginal before, and it’s just awful now.

Reason for no updates or email responses since Monday????? Just ask Telus, their damn DSL went down again and just came back about 5pm today. I have no idea when it will die again so am just posting this. If it's still up tomorrow morning I'll be able to give you people a nice big update. If not...

I'd do it right now but the video is nearing the critical half way mark and there's no way I can do anything else until tomorrow. LP
