Day of the Spectacular arrives (link to main page)

2005
Ya, I know it's a bit early, but I'm done...And so it comes to an end once again. Many hours of fun and frolic. Thanks for a great year everybody. 2005 is looking fabulous for HH, see yawl soon.

OUR FEATURE PRESENTATION OF THE EVENING

Forty year old drag pics
Our first ever invasion of Carlson's stuff comes up with a gold mine from 1964 and much more including unique Green Elephant sequence.

11:10 p.m. just post it

11:00 p.m. huh..wu. BUUUUUURP!
Corona...wuzat?

10:30 p.m. zzzzzzzzzz

10:00 p.m. Getting sleeeeeeeeeeeee

9:20 p.m. I can't wait for the Bracktacular! or is it Brackster? Brackahoolie? I'll ask this guy. What? What TIME is it? Really? No way eh...REALLY? Three hours? no way

8:30 p.m. Our biggest of the night. Gettin good now.

7:30 p.m. Bit more up, stills LOTS of work to do, so sorry no requests, and anything that's submitted now is waaaaay too late.

6:30 p.m. It's not the greatest feeling knowing that right now our world is in about as much turmoil as it's been in a good long time. So it is we try to remind ourselves it's things like drag racing and cars that exist as our common escape. About the only difference between most of you and me is that I do this for a living every day of the year. It is however, nights such as this when I reflect not upon not just what is today or what has been this past year, but what once was and what someday may be.

Now if you can figure that out, you're on about the same planet as I right now. Yes it's tough to think happy thoughts this last night of 2004, but for now I urge you to please take a bit a moment in time to enjoy what many people have assembled just for you, and you alone.

Thank you all for a wonderful year. We ended up with a bit less income, but with less costs. The big 'announcement' of what was to have been a video 'magazine' has gone out the window. It was universally felt that videos need to be individual. One topic, one type of drag racing.

Hence our first major announcement of 2005

HH is starting the year with not a street car video, but a Pro Drag video. That's right folks, and sorry street dudes n dudettes, but in three weeks time we journey south to Las Vegas where we get to video three days of the biggest pro test session there's maybe ever bin. Think about this now.

Timing is very big in this biz. Not the only thing, but a big deal. We have the unique opportunity to produce, at the beginning of the season, a video featuring the likes of damn near every big name star in the sport. Now riddle me this Batman? "What video choices do you have if you want to see something other than what ESPN does of drag racing professional cars and drivers?"

Hard to pass up eh?

Oh ya...first installment is up.

5:45 p.m. Oh ya sure...send me photos now...we're 'bout fired up.

10:00 a.m.
The final photos have just come in, and without a doubt we have a collection of drag racing imagery second to none. I mean like wow, I found some stuff, you found some stuff, and even though I just won't be able to use it all, tonight will be awesome.

We've had feedback from Europe, Oz, New Zealand, all over the USA and across Canada, all looking forward to what we have to lay on ya tonight. We'll be able to fill some of the requests, but much of what we have is on video, and after our recent bandwidth-bashing affair will have to go a bit easy on the moving pickchurs...so when you see 'em download them quick as if it gets crazy we'll have to pull 'em without warning.

We will end the year 2004 here in Langley, British Columbia, Canada on a chilly, but bright sunny day. Denise and I have recent tradition of having a crab/lobster dinner at home with Garlits...between my trips back and forth to the computer room.

This time around we'll begin even earlier than in the past. I anticipate the first posting to show around 'sixish' followed by tons more with the grand finale right at midnight. Please hang off emailing me until at least the first set goes up, as I'll even try to post some of the more entertaining e-mails throughout the night.

From here on it's 14 hours of work and play. See ya later. LP

Monday December 27, 2004

Hope yawl had a nice Christmas. It's slowly getting back to normal around here and we hope to have almost all the orders we've received the past few days out within 48 hours. We've not exactly been slacking off the past week as the Friday night thing has become a monster with so many cool submissions from all you guys along with my stuff, Carlson's old pics and more. This is the kind of 'work' I love, but with all the late orders in the back of my mind becomes something I can only spend so much time on.

A final reminder to all you Mission racers waiting for stuff. I'm on it all this week as next week the Div. six banquet video work must be completed. Then two weeks later...naw I can't tell ya that yet.

Wednesday December 22, 2004

Of all things drag racing to me, going through Rich Carlson's old negs and trans is at the very top of the 'cool' meter. For the first time in at least a decade I actually drove to his house with the expressed plan to cruise through some old images. Partly for use in the Division Six Banquet video, but I'm always looking for some killer image I've never seen of his. Three decades since I first got to play in the vast drag racing toybox that is Rich's files, I can still find stunning drag photos with unbelievable regularity.

Today I was awestruck by some sixties and seventies treasures. Absolute treasures. I finally got into his old medium format color negs and transparencies.6cm x 6cm time warps. And what I found. Oh what I gazed upon...

Images that very, very few others have ever laid eyes upon. Many by just Rich himself. The most beautiful photos from this era I have ever seen. Without question. Better may be out there, but I've never seen anything better than what I saw today. And what you will see very soon. The jewel in the crown? A 1964 Jerry Ruth car feature shot on a perfect sunny afternoon at Arlington. With the 'Blad. 1964 slide film. You will not believe stuff like this exists and has never been seen publicly.

But that's what this web site is all about.

We've basically put a wrap on this year ladies and gentleman. We're dun. It's time to chill, get ready for Boxing Day, and just put our damn feet up. Got so much neat stuff to post over the next few days though. C'mon back lots eh.

An don forget:

Noo Yeez Eve baby...

Where U gunna b?

Tuesday December 21, 2004

Happy birthday Vicki!

Saturday December 18, 2004

Our video orders just keep streaming in. A hoped for week off has gone down the tubes as we have not finished what we need to for Xmas, and it looks like we'll be thrashing for most of next week as well. We'll look to slack off a bit later next week.

PhotoSPECTACULAR update
More cool stuff keeps coming in, and I've found some old treasures I forgot I had. Next week we take a day off to travel south to visit Rich and Elaine Carlson and our request for Jim Green, Jerry Ruth and more stuff is already in. This is gonna be a good one!

Tuesday December 14, 2004

Well... taking some time off now seems like a distant memory as a bunch of personal video projects await my attention...and many still hope to get stuff mailed to them by Xmas....good luck.

A few tidbits have come in recently including a big set of photos from my old buddy Klaus Holze. You may remember him as the dude from Florida whose impressive imagery was featured on last year's PhotoSPECTACULAR. Well this time round Klausie has submitted some simply stunning photos from venues all over the USA. Thanks to his considerable efforts HH will be able to showcase some of the world's top rods, bikes and trucks this New Years Eve. He still has an eye for the incredible and the insane, this is eye candy second to none.

And I know this one has been on my 'should post this link' list for a long time, but a recent reminder from a visitor makes me want to pass it along now so that you cabin fever types can have a brief respite from the greyness outside. The old time drag images here are among the Internet's best, and it all comes from friendly Manitoba. Click here for memories from Bison Dragways and read about the 'Division Six invaders'...

Also this day comes info and a pic that proves old crotch rocket pilots never die, they just go faster, as Al Omond sends us word that he would very much like to have a sub eights second number flash up on that big MRP scoreboard...on his new turbo Kawi!

Finally we give a plug to Billy Pratt's lil site known as draglist.com that today features a bunch of new stuff including: Hemi Fred's Sox & Martin Wheelstand Pictorial, Tim Lynch Shatters "Outlaw Racing Record" at E-Town, and recent thoughts from the amazing mind of Flyn' Phil Elliott.

CWD slams the door on most successful season to date
With the actual Canada West Doorslammers awards and championship (Joe 'Sharkman' Mellof ) presented back at the final race, a group of about 100 series regulars came from far and wide for a laid back affair at the 'Fog on the River' restaurant/bar in Mission last evening. Among the long distance people were Ruth and Frank Nelson, Mike Bedsworth and family along with interior racer Roy Lazic.

It was a terrific night thanks to few formalities other than to line up for dinner and a couple of informal presentations. You could have called it Truck Nite as Rob Murphy was presented an HH Doorslammer DVD by TCS for having 'coolest truck' and Jan and Ray of R.J. Enterprises & VP Fuels awarded Ray Kirton a plaque for the 'Burnout King' after he hammered out a number of 1/8th mile tire toasters this season in his bad ass black blown Chevy fleetside. Also announced here was a multi year deal between MRP and R.J. to be the official fuel supplier at the track.

HH would like to thank Marcy Copely for helping organize this deal along with Dean Murdoch who went well above the call of duty to ensure our video was well presented all night long. It worked out great as we sold out our just completed 2004 Doorslammer video in just a couple of hours. And yes it will be available soon from both HH and TCS.

Today we rest and starting tomorrow we're back on track attempting to get a bunch of stuff done and contacting a number of you both by e-mail and phone. Hang in there we'll get to you all sometime in the next few days.

FRAAAAAAANK!!!
And for maybe the forum posting of the year, go to the bottom of this thread (Sat Dec 11, 2004 11:16 pm ) and read why there is little doubt Frank Tamez should be the hands down winner of the Div. 6 Sportsman Driver of the Year!

Saturday December 11, 2004

As Boxing Day quickly approaches...ya there's something else in there too but I can't recall just what it is right now...about the only thing northwest drag racers have to look forward to is the seemingly never-ending slew of weekend parties and banquets.

In the past few years, the term 'off' or 'silly' season has simply disappeared from the HH lifestyle. Day in and day out we have the good fortune to watch drag racing every single day. Sure it's all 'repeats' on video but having recorded 86 hours of video in 2004, there is so much neat stuff it makes for all kinds of fun.

Amid a slew of individual client videos we've managed to pound out three specialty features in less than three months. With one more mini feature still to come we are currently using up every bit of computing power we own, so it's time for a new box, our old Dell ready for an upgrade, Our 'to-do' list now includes shopping for a new computer. Then there's the setup, file transfer, etc. etc. etc.

As for those parties, we attend one more tonight when the Canada West Doorslammers return to Mission one final time in '04 to hand out some hardware, and remember the season with our just completed Doorslammer highlight video. A couple of hours previous to that we meet with the BCCCA executive to look at how HH can help improve the MRP website.

Next up in early January is the NHRA D6 banquet. Oh ya, we've got some work to do for that puppy.

We've got the Pacific Raceways Kost-bash to look forward to in late January, then a month later we head back to Las Vegas. Between now and then we have to finish a bunch of individual vids, do the PR project, then start and finish the big street car documentary. Finally there's the matter of planning out our big new '05 video project.

For the record, I really want to thank the everybody who managed to schedule their banquets, etc. in such a great way. All spread out over nearly four months is sooooo much better than squeezing them all together in half the time. It's something I very much hope continues next year. It not only helps with the long downtime many of you have, but really makes our job so much easier and much more successful. We got so much more done, and so many of you got to enjoy the fruits of our labors. Please remember this when you schedule your awards banquets and parties for '05.

The basic premise behind this little posting is that I still have to get back to a BUNCH of you regarding all kinds of stuff not mentioned here. Tonight I party (and sell), tomorrow I rest. Monday marks the first work day in three months that does not have a too-close-at-hand major deadline dangling in front of my face, so I should be able to handle most of you...next week. Know wut am sayin?

Friday December 10, 2004

Our success strikes us again
Upon checking our bandwidth usage it seems you guys have something for watching a six second 200mph car on a chassis dyno. As a result we have had to remove the video of Dal Sangha's Mustang on the dyno we posted recently. We are working with another site to have it back up as soon as we have the time to do it. Sorry for any inconvenience, but this one clip was so far beyond any normal traffic numbers we have to take it down so it wouldn't effect the rest of the site.

Any video mail orders received after today CANNOT be guaranteed to get to you in time for Xmas.

Pacific Raceways gears up for '05
More info has come our way regarding the 2005 drag race season at Pacific Raceways in Kent WA.

HH will be in attendance with a new PR video Sunday January 23 for the Second Annual Racer And Crew Appreciation Banquet at the infamous “Prime Time Café” (1525 A St NE, Auburn) courtesy of their good friends the Kost family. The fun will begin at 11:00a.m. till 3:00p.m. Tickets are on sale in advance at $20.00 per person. DEADLINE FOR TICKETS IS FRIDAY JANUARY 5TH, 2005. Any Questions feel free to Contact Elizabeth at Esada@pacificraceways.com or (253) 639-5927. All tickets will be picked up at the banquet room as you enter the facility. Tickets will be $25.00 at the door.

The 2005 schedule is slated to go to final reading the next few days but there is a preliminary schedule posted on their homepage. Big news for nostalgia nuts is a huge new race next Labor Day Weekend September 3 & 4. The first annual GOODGUYS Northwest Nostalgia Drags is a full tilt event that will feature all the usual classes including Top Fuel Dragsters and Nitro Funny Cars!!! (more) That should be good news to the local who just made a trip to Utah...

A bit more info regarding their giant NHRA National Open season opener April 22, 23, 24 is that on the Saturday an additional Super Gas Association race has been added to make this a double header weekend for those racers.

Thursday December 9, 2004

Ruth & Green officially announced as 2004 NHRA Division Six Hall of Fame inductees

If there was ever a reason to attend the annual Leaders end-of-season bash at the Doubletree Hotel Seattle Airport, Saturday night January 8, 2005 then THIS is it, as easily THE most controversial, talked-about, loved, hated racer in the history of the northwest, Jerry Ruth, will at long last be added to the NHRA Division Six Hall of Fame! Along with King, the equally deserving racer, owner, and all-round-DUDE, Jim Green will also officially take his place among the northwest greats.

Tickets and rooms are still available as this is being posted, but knowing now who will be honored, you had better make plans yesterday to ensure you can witness what will surely be a northwest drag racing night like no other. Remember, you don't have to be a racer to attend. Any old (and I do mean old) Ruth or Green fan is most welcome, but once the tickets are gone (and baby they will be), you're outta luck.

Think Green will be cool when he gets up to speak? Could King maybeeee have something to say? Like the age old adage still says: Don't let Monday morning's headlines make YOU regret NOT being in Seattle that Saturday night!

Special room rates are available for January 7-8 for $79. You must mention NHRA when booking rooms. To book your room, please call 1-800-222-TREE or 206-246-8600. For those not staying at the hotel, a parking fee of $4 will be required for the banquet.

Banquet tickets are available for purchase by calling the Northwest Division office at 253-826-8666. Adult tickets are $40 and children 12 and under are $20. Tables may be reserved only when groups of 10 tickets or more are purchased.

Doors will open for a no-host cocktail hour at 5PM. National Open Series awards will begin at 6PM and dinner will be served at 7PM. Summit and Lucas Series awards will take place immediately following dinner.

Yes HH will be on hand to record the festivities on video and YES we will have a very special 'one night only' video to show featuring not only the 2004 Division (yes, and WORLD) champions, but the HoF guys as well. It will be awesome.

PLEASE NOTE: Div 6 special award voting is now closed

Well the mail strike is 'kinda' on, so I'm left with little else than to send them and cross my fingers. From here on I CANNOT GUARANTEE ANY XMAS DELIVERIES of anything other than pickup. Sorry, but the strike situation is very questionable and a courier solution does not work for me.

Wednesday December 8, 2004

LAST DAY TO VOTE FOR DIV 6 AWARDS!!!
And ifin yawl are a havin a hard time a decidin check dis highly entertainin, informative thread on zone.... And remember the decision is made by the number of VOTES that actually come in, no bs, forum posters don't count...and it's open to anyone fans, racers, but sorry, no pets allowd....damn and Garlits had so wanted to take part...

VIDEO ORDERS PLEASE READ!!!!!!!!Canada Post clerical staff is threatening to go on strike tomorrow. Until we know for sure I will NOT ship any video orders. All videos that are currently ready to ship will sit for today and will go out courier tomorrow at my expense if necessary. If the strike happens HH will curtail ALL orders except for pickups as we are not set up for high volume courier operations.

Monday December 6, 2004

ATTN DOORSLAMMERS
Today I begin work on your banquet video which will take all week to complete. Due to the late request for this it will be a basic product featuring lots of runs, and some pit and lane shots, but I know what I have and it will be very entertaining. I will have a few for sale at the banquet at a reduced price from my other feature videos. At the same time I'm working on two client videos for Mike Bedsworth and Ray Kirtin. Although everything I shot of all you guys in 2004 will be on the feature video, if you would like an individual video, with all the slow motion etc. please let me know asap and I will let you know the details.

With this bein' the off season and all...well for some. I'm busier now than back in September. Anyway, as we draw closer to our annual New Years Eve Photo/Video SPECTACULAR we start to get all kinds of cool submissions. Knowing that so many of you are already suffering bigtime from cabin fever, and when something this entertaining comes our way, well...sometimes we just can't wait, so here's an early treat for those of you who may not be aware of this terrific Western Canadian photo site.

We're savin' up lots more so don't fret that our big nite will have any lack of treats and surprise for yawl.

Saturday December 4, 2004

MRP champs crowned, possible major improvements officially announced.
The 2004 Mission Raceway Park annual awards banquet saw a packed room on hand to witness the official end of the drag race season as all track class champions were crowned and a number of special awards announced.

The evening began with MC Rick Farmer noting the end of a not-so-well-known '13 year' curse. "The original track opened in '65, ran till '78. Thirteen years. Then thirteen years later the new track opened in 1992. 2004 marks the end of it's thirteenth season and we're now ready to go for number fourteen". Then the major news.

With NHRA Division Six Director Mike Rice looking on smiling, Farmer surprised the crowd with this line, as he mentioned the starting of that fourteenth season. "There's a slight possibility we won't open until April, not the usual mid March date." With many in crowd buzzing with wonder he continued, Race Director Wally Duperon at his side, he too with a big smile on his face. "We're gonna dig up the starting line and extend the concrete out to the 660 mark." Work on this has been ongoing for a good while and though not confirmed just yet, it looks very good that we'll see an 1/8th mile of new, smooth concrete in 2005.

Special awards were then presented to Sponsor of the Year Lordco with a great word put in for Lucas as well. Bobbie Ehlers was awarded Rookie of the Year by Richardt Sholz and Rachel Lowe took Junior Dragster Rookie of the Year.

The Larry Ast Memorial 'Most Innovative Racer' trophy went to Rob Murphy for not only his amazing new carbon fibre doorslammer Cameo pickup but the team's outrageous golf cart that often drew more attention than the race truck itself..

As the classes were gone through we learned that Super Pro winner Martin Rachel was also proclaimed High Points champion after earning more points than any other MRP racer in 2004. Then came the Junior awards that simply stole the show.

First we saw four of the top five spots claimed by young ladies, then champion Julianne Mellof took to the microphone for one of the finest acceptance speeches this writer has ever heard followed by another from fourth place Erica Carlisle (graduating to a full size dragster in '05) that made everyone in the room realize that the future of this sport is in very good hands indeed.

Newly commissioned Div. Six DRAW representative Darlene Evans then pulled the winning ticket for a $3000 Kawasaki generator that went to Cheri Davis from the 503 are code in the US. Then it was mingling, a few more cocktails and the end of a wonderful night. Our video went over very well, we sold a bunch, and we even learned of some new rides for '05 including a new local wheelstander that may well have a female shoe...

We now prepare for next Saturday's Doorslammer bash where we'll debut yet another special video, go to zone for all the details as there are still tickets left and it's open to racers, fans, or anybody who would like to attend. See ya there!

Happy birthday today goes out to Joan Wells and get well to Diane Behnke who broke an arm yesterday at home, but still managed to attend last nite with hubby Bobby.

Three days, nights, evenings, mornings...in November and December
Hard to believe I've been back just a week from Vegas, for at this point that feels like months ago. The reason for this time warp is because tonight I just completed a two hour video featuring hilights from the entire 2004 drag season at MRP.

What began as 'something to watch' at this Friday night's banquet once again turned into a Pfisterized saga of epic proportions. I'm calling this one my X-rated 'home video'. It's a bunch of pit and track clips unlike anything I've ever done before. There is nothing from the Lucas, since I did that already, nothing from the CMDRA...ditto. Just a bit of Doorslammer antics since I'm doing a video for their banquet the following weekend. It's rated X because there is profanity, and yes folks...nudity. Really. I guarantee you will laugh you butts of at some of the pit lunacy and the John Heida piece will move you. There's a LOT of Pro Mods, not that much bracket stuff since most of that footage I shot this year was the same few customers over and over. Likewise for the Juniors. So how did I fill a two hour video? You'll just have to be at the MRP banquet to see for yourself, for though I would like to market them, once some people see what's on this it may well become a one nite stand.

Thanks to Rick Gondor for the following piece:

Wilf Tucker, one of the Vancouver Islands drag racing "Pioneers", passed away on November 25th. In the late 50's, Wilf built the Islands first "rail job" (later known as a dragster). It was powered by a twin carb Model B engine and was the first dragster to run on the old San Cobble track. The chassis still exists in Victoria.

Wilf went on to build several cars, including this injected Hemi powered dragster in the early 70's. This car made more runs on the streets in Wilf's neighbourhood than it did on the track. Ever the innovator, Wilf eventually put the Hemi, with six carbs, into a 55 Chev. In his later years, Wilf built a Yamaha powered winged mini sprint car that ran with the dwarf cars at Western Speedway.

And I borrowed this from the zone forum:
Some of you may have met or raced against Bill Prince. He was a bracket racer from Keizer, Oregon who raced in Pro Bracket. He drove a beautiful aqua colored '58 Chev in the low 11's. Unfortunately, he lost his battle with lung cancer, passing away in his sleep Tuesday night prior to Thanksgiving. The family is asking rememberances be sent to DRAW; 3221 Rosewood Court, Davie, FL 33328 For more on Bill go to http://nwdragracing.com/

E-mail Larry if you have any questions
