SEVERANCE, RUCKMAN LEAD WINNERS AT CHAMPION RACEWAYS LUCAS OIL SERIES RACE EAGLE POINT, Ore. Racers in 13 categories took to the strip today at Champion Raceway in the OnlineAuction.com Northwest Challenge, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, which is the last of six events slated in NHRAs Northwest division. In the end, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Joey Severance, Spanaway, Wash., increased his lead in the division point standings with a win while Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Terry Ruckman, Grand Junction, Colo., helped his own cause in the Pacific division standings by scoring the win. Severance, who consistently made 5.4-second passes all weekend, beat Medfords Mike Austin, who slowed to a 7.638-second lap at 117.82 mph, in the first round. In the final, he squared off against the events No. 1 qualifier Shawn Cowie of Richmond, B.C. Severance ran 5.414 seconds at 261.93 mph to Cowies 5.428-second, 264.18 mph pass. This is Severances second win of the season to go with two runner-up finishes. Ruckman carried his No. 1 qualifying effort all the way to the winners circle. He made his best lap of the weekend in the final against reigning division champion Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore. Ruckman outpaced Hough with a 5.698-second, 250.78 mph to Houghs 5.848-second pass at 252.85 mph. For Ruckman this was his fourth final-round appearance in five races and his third win. Doug Lambeck, Northridge, Calif., earned the win in Comp Eliminator while Jimmy DeFrank, Chatsworth, Calif., rolled over the competition in Super Stock. Stock Eliminator No. 1 qualifier Hal Sorensen, Vancouver, Wash., got the win over his brother Joe who resides in Woodburn, Ore. The Super Comp win went to Brandon Yoder of Gresham, Ore., and veteran racer Mike Ferderer, Buckley, Wash., won in Super Gas. Dudley Gee, Canby, Ore., earned the win in Super Street; Daryl Hemley, Burley, Wash., took home the Top Sportsman hardware; and Stefan Kondolay, Chilliwack, B.C., won the Top Dragster crown. In Sportsman Motorcycle, Craig Rych, North Bend, Ore., scored the win and Medford racer Jeff Schultz won in Super Pro. It was a hometown hero final in Pro as Klamath Falls resident Paul Breedlove ousted Medfords Dan Nikodym. This was the last of six events on the NHRA Northwest division calendar but racers may still earn points toward division and national championships at out-of-division races. The final NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event of the year is scheduled November 6-9 in Las Vegas.

EAGLE POINT, Ore. The first day of racing at the OnlineAuction.com Northwest Challenge, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is complete, setting the stage for eliminations tomorrow. Shawn Cowie, Richmond, B.C., set the pace in Top Alcohol Dragster while Grand Junction, Colo., resident Terry Ruckman led the Top Alcohol Funny Car field. Medfords Mike Austin is No. 7 in the TAD field and Clint Thompson of Klamath Falls is fourth in the TAFC class. Cowie laid down a 5.372-second pass at 265.38 mph to outpace No. 2 qualifier Joey Severance of Spanaway, Wash. Severance ran 5.419 seconds at 257.92 mph. Austins 5.634-second, 256.94 mph effort was just enough to keep him off the bump spot in the eight-car field. Ruckman ran 5.748 seconds at 249.81 mph. It was just enough to cover Ontario, Calif., racer Sean OBannons 5.757-second, 251.77 mph pass. Reigning division champ Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore., is in the No. 3 spot with a 5.823-second, 247.61 mph run. Thompson clocked in at5.846 seconds and 249.72 mph. In Comp Eliminator, Rob Harrison, N. Vancouver, B.C., is the No. 1 qualifier and Oregon City racer Adam Bowdish is No. 3 while Medford resident Mark Stewart is in the fifth spot. Happy 70th birthday to one of the coolest dudes I know - Moe Jones! Note: We just upgraded our telus adsl speed and the HH HD files play perfect first time. We went from 1.5 to 3Mps, and now have truly watchable full screen online videos. This is massive eye-opener. It's thanks to advertisers like Danny at Pro Gas and Mark et Marks we can continue to move forward like this at HH. Thanks as well to all the people who have ordered videos this year, both feature and individual. This amount of support is awesome and will help in the purchase of much-needed software and hardware for 2009. Feature Video update Work now swings full time into the Ashcroft project for their banquet October 4, and once it's done I can think about all the other stuff I have to do 'before Xmas', so PLEASE wait until a couple of weeks before you ask when 'your video will be done' as I can't even think about it until after the Eagle banquet. I have seen the light...Ah have seeeeen the Light of Iseli! Grant Iseli's home movies actually. A Vancouver kid who went to the drags a lot and really knew how to use an 8mm movie camera. A sound movie camera. This evening I viewed the northwest nostalgia drag race video 'of all time'. No, make that the northwest MOTORSPORT video of all time. Ok, how bout 'the mid 70s drag racing, dirt track video of all time'? Note: I originally thought that the first of Grant's 'home movies' was good, but after seeing this one, I can't even remember the first. This night I saw and heard econo dragsters, early rear engined nitro dragsters and funny cars at Mission and Seattle. The sequence of Snake blipping the Army Arrow in the Kent pits will make you stop breathing. Bonin in his glory days with the Bubble Up Firebird...Zeigler - KING of the dry hops!! But perhaps the part that flat put me back into my chair was Skagit Super Dirt Cup. Not sure what mid 70s year it was, but we see a multi lap battle expertly filmed from the top of the stands between veteran Jimmy Boyd and a young Sammy Swindell. With sound!!! I cannot imagine any other quality sound footage like this existing of that race. And there's more Skagit here too. A lot more. And that ain't event touchin' the surface. Bill Phillips, Romunds Chariot Vega...Nick Harmon's Vega & the Satellite of Larry Palmer both on nitro...Miss Debra Monza. ALL with sound! Some crazy econo slingshot dude smokin burnouts in a lower mainland industrial park....Hank Johnson hanging a BIG powerstand in the right lane at MR...Jerry Verheul...Double B floppers...Ruth, Swann...King...some bozo on a drag bike ZINGIN it up the Mission Raceway return road thru all four gears- from the top end TOWER!...and many more top end shots from that original tower that are simply magic.And did I mention they are ALL WITH SOUND!?! Easily the greastest mid 70s audio/video collection from this region as there must exist. Well filmed, sound sync'd perfectly. Not super clear, but you get the idea REAL well. This is the one video I have ever seen from 'my' generation that honestly takes me back. When you see this, you'll be totally blown away by the raw, incredibly fucking unsafe shit that everybody from the zany drivers to the TOTALLY outta control crew guys to the photographers-without-guardrails did on a regular basis. NO doubt this is a northwest treasure, and I am honored to have been sent a copy. Hopefully all this can either be sold with proceeds going to some kind of fund, or just posted for all to see and copy. At the moment a worthy man named George Adams has been taken to task to care for and digitize all this and he's doing a great job. I'm sure you'll see some clips online really soon at his nwdragracing.com site. In the meantime, rest assured that there does exist something you some day must see. A time capsule of epic proportions. An honest-to-fucking-goodness-wayback-machine. UPDATE: And then there is Grant's Indy footage. He apparently just walked out to the line with all the still shooters and shot film for like two days...and nights. His nitro flame shots and dry hops and GIANT NITRO FC wheelstands at INDY are surreal. Big, Shirley, Snake, the Max,Tharp in the Candies & Hughes dragster, McEwen's Corvette, Lil John Lombardo, Pulde in the War Eagle Trans Am, Mike Miller, and many more including some AMAZING wheelstanding gear-jamin' Mod Prod hits...at Indy, at night. With sound. I think the Adams boyz (George and Jon) should sit down and plan out an awesome public debut showing of this masterpiece. Say the afternoon of the D6 awards banquet??? Charge to get in...all proceeds going to 'something'...q&a with George...it'd be cool. Lots of new stuff on the mrp site, and tons of requests and submissions coming in the last few days. Congratulations to new dad Rash Dhaliwal who became a father for the first time Friday. They are still undecided on attending the SCSN after runs of 6.63/207, 6.82/205 & 6.71/206. Mark Wolfe is playing with some new clutch settings and has yet to make a full pass, that should change after today.

HD Video update Lots more goin on this weekend as Ashcroft hosts the 2nd Annual TCS Performance Fall Jacket Race featuring a bracket double header and the final race of the RJ Enterprises - VP Fuels Blown Alky Summer Series. Ad in King of the Track and an early Halloween party and it's yet one more fun weekend at da plex. Racing starts 9am both days. A little to the south of us in Bakersfield, the D6 Alcohol Funny Car battle continues (more) You're reminded that the final D6 race is at Medford in just two weeks. And yes, HH will be at the Vegas Divisional and SEMA in November to cover the biggest week of the year. We'll be at Mission tonight for the street legals and again all weekend shooting a Mega Ford Weekend feature video. Oh ya, Bucky Austin just threw in $100 each for the fastest Olds, Buick and Poncho at this weekends race in Bremerton. And many eyes will be on the NHRA National event at the new track in North Carolina. Lets hope Ike doesn't swing up that way Sunday...

at Race City? I'm one of those who got to see two Race Cities. An NHRA points race the year it opened in 1985 to the nostalgia event just two weeks ago. NHRA in '85, IHRA in '08. I wrote recently that this place is but a shell of it's old self - but what a former self that once was. The huge televised oval races...Canadian Superbike series back when our guys were as good as anybody else's guys...The Players Challenge Series for Camaros and Firebirds...IMCA, NHRA Divisionals...Top Fuelers and Funny Cars. Ya, Race City did it all, and did it all as good or better than any other facility this country has ever known. If this place really does become a memory under a heap of garbage it will be a sad, sad day for motorsport enthusiasts everywhere, but especially those of us in western Canada. Many westerners have experienced this kind of closing before. For them it's instant deja vu. For those who have not, it's gonna be a shock. No more dragstrip in cow town. A whole bunch of 'race' cars have just become 'street' cars. It will be interesting to keep an eye on the street scene here. Hopefully local efforts to build another get something positive out of this, for this is the richest part of our country. If they can't rebuild here, it'll send a major message to every other track in Canada. If the city gets this place, none of our facilities are safe, as other municipalities will surely study this case for possible future reference. We'll post links to any other info we come across, and

I'm reminded by some of the naturally aspirated six second door car crowd that they too deserve the often rabid attention I give the street car guys. That is true, I admit fully that I do it...but. I feel that heads up racing at this level is just so much more exciting. Again, nothing against anybody, but I admit a bias to heads up racing and will try my best in the future to give credit to those other super fast, super cool door cars who don't often or ever run in a heads up format. And yes, I fully understand that heads up is all about money, but I'm just a simple 'fan' of those who race not just to win, but to go ever quicker and faster. Hi Larry: We will, THANKS GUYS! -LP Mission air show...Murray does not improve but rings up steady 6.641/217.28 Friday, 6.616/224.55 yesterday, the a best of 6.623/217.97 today...Ken Sihota goes 6.89/203 in his new Pro Street Firebird...If Rash Dhaliwal can keep all the candles lit for 1320, his string of 60 ft times of 1.001, 1.001 & .999 could mean some very stout numbers...Charleton wins Doorslammer, but it's not quite enough as Grant Howell of Victoria wins series. Ya, I know, I should be out at MRP today, but with so much work to do I just have to try and get a bit more caught up. Nitro Madness coverage is complete with Saturday photo essay At 7:30 p.m. we run first round of Pro Street and the very first pair has an oildown in the left lane. It takes 46 minutes to clean up because it went the entire length of the track. We complete Pro Street and then a jet car dumps kerosene on the start line. We clean that up. We run out Outlaw 10.5 and then the first dust storm rolls in (I repeat the first dust storm). We clean the track and get done with first round of all classes at approximately 10 p.m .then the second dust storm rolls in. Then we have a car take out the start mph and finish line cones. After resetting the cones the next dust storm rolls in with a huge gust of wind that blows the cones out of position (they ended up at the safety truck approximately 1/2 mile away). We clean the track and keep Robert Kwasny on the start mph cone until cars are actually rolling into stage (9 seconds is plenty of time to get out of the way). After that everything went just fine. We were originally scheduled to finish at 12:15 a.m. but ran 2 hours late. Due to the circumstances we are pleased with the finish time it could have been worse. I've got to give a tip of the hat to the crew for such a great job and not letting the oil, cones, kerosene and dust (lots of dust) get to them. In spite of it all the mile per hour records were dropping like flies. Some of the crew actually worked from 7 a.m. until 2:30 a.m. the next morning as we had our Jr. Divisional event earlier that morning. It's the people that make the track and events like that that build character. I'll tell you, last week proved that I've got some real characters working for me! (Also, I need to throw out a special thank you to Darren Kaufman from Seattle for coming down to help us out in a couple of areas). I was also going to let you know that less than one year after his return from Iraq, Nick Heinrich (LVMS starter) is moving again. His department at Nellis Air Force base closed and he is relocating to L.A. this weekend. He's only 3 hours away and plans on working most of our major events but will be unable to be here every week. Over the last 3 years his service to his country has kept him away from the track (and home) for 2.5 years. We're looking forward to seeing you here soon. -Chris Blair

watching the PSCA Pro Street finale. The Pacific Street Car Association's Labor Day Nationals
at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway wound up in the wee hours
of Monday morning and they saved the best for last. Giuseppe Gentile
of Sun Valley, Calif., defeated John Mihovetz of Ontario, Calif.,
to win the Pro Street class and also turned in the fastest speed of
the night: 228.50mph (at 6.349 sec.). Queens, N.Y., native Carl Cannavo now lives in Las Vegas
and he scored the Bracket 1 win over Jerry Hors of Calif., 8.065 sec./172.74
mph to 8.959 sec./152.99. Jon Irving of Boulder City won the Trophy class over
Randy Hadtrath of South Gate, Calif. Ron Weems of Riverside, Calif., was victorious over
Rich Zehring of San Jose in the Outlaw Street class - a competition
that saw the speed record broken no less than four times during eliminations. Roger Holder of Bakersfield won the Extreme Drag Radial
class over El Segundo's Bobby Frye. Gary Brandt of Palmdale, Calif., defeated Craig Williams

Geez, the stuff that went on while I was away... Warter goes rounds at INDY Cow Town Codgerama And YES. This must become an annual or semi-annual event. Then there were 'The Finals'... My answer was simple. It's been going on forever, never really shows up until mere days, if not hours before the event, and nobody seems to have the jam (me included) to name names in public in an effort to make it all fair. Thing is, to do an honest report on 'cheating' at the bracket finals with 'illegal' racers would take a ton of time and effort to do. One cannot simply make a bunch of accusations based on e-mail allegations. One would actually have to contact ALL those involved (racers, track managers, and NHRA officials) and try to sort it out. I don't know if a forum is the place to raise this as rarely does that ever really make a difference. As does a rant on a site like this one or zone or dragracingonline or any other. No, I sincerely feel it's such a massive 'system' that it's well beyond the power of any one or two individuals to change (though officials did make changes this year). Frankly NHRA has way too many other things to deal with than a few possible 'cheating' bracket bashers. Again. It's the same thing every year, some years are worse than others, some apparent offenses are worse than others. It's a 'system' that some play MUCH better than others, but it's the only system we have. Deal with it or work to make it better - and not just a few days before the 2009 finals. I wish you luck. This'll have to come not from a pro spec like me, but from you the racers. Now the good bracket news. Congrats to both Team Firebird on a huge win at home and how about runner-up Madras? Unreal. HH has gotta go there some day. Jim Sibley (Team Eagle) is going to Pomona!!! At 68 years young 'Sib' may or may not be the oldest finalist ever, but he most certainly is one of the most colorful. Here is a 'racer' pure and simple. From his beginnings back in the 60's right up to this very day, few have the drive, the charm, and the gonads of this man. For him to qualify for the big show is amazing. To do it after an injury that would have ended most racing careers on a BIKE, is beyond words. If you're going to Pomona get ready, cause he's gonna win, and there will be party that will make the nitro world champs gigs look like an elementary school picnic.
