As HH presents this weekend's coverage of the race at LVMS, we mourn the passing March 7 of Dwight Lee from Red Deer Alberta. Lee was part of the Lee Bros. racing team who for decades were among the quickest and fastest stick Super Stockers in the world. Our condolences to his family and friends. Below is from the official announcement: LEE 1952-2008 Dwight Lee beloved husband of Joy Lee of Red Deer, went to be with Jesus at the Misericordia Community Hospital, Edmonton on Friday, March 7, 2008, at the age of 55 years. Dwight was born on August 27, 1952 at Elnora, Alberta. He started out his career at Northwest Motors, then went into partnership with his brother Allyn starting Lee Brothers, which has operated for the last 28 years. Dwight loved traveling to tropical destinations and drag racing. He is survived by his loving wife, Joy Lee, his five loving children, Meranda Lee, Kolton Lee, Brayton Lee, Marika Lee and Erriton Lee all of Red Deer, a sister, Olivia Massegnan of Kelowna, British Columbia and a brother, Allyn (Trudy) Lee of Red Deer. Dwight was predeceased by his parents, Oliver and Mary Lee. Memorial donations in Dwight's honour may be made directly to a trust account set up in the children's name at the Canadian Western Bank, 4822 51 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 4H3.

Have received a number of e-mails lately regarding the upcoming auction of Spokane Raceway. The rumors on this one are over the top. While most of the people writing into HH are worried the property will become anything but a drag strip, we've heard yet other rumors that at least three major drag race players are slated to be in on the bidding in hopes of getting into (or staying in) the drag racing track ownership business...and no, Bruton Smith is not one of them. We've heard both NHRA and IHRA, and we've heard both racers and current track owner/operators. We'll all know soon enough when the famed ole track goes under the hammer April 10.
SPOKANE, WA (Jan. 22, 2008) -- Spokane Raceway Park -- a 588-acre complex with a 2.5-mile road track, drag strip and oval track -- will sell at auction Thursday, April 10, with J.P. King Auction Company managing the sale. "This facility is well positioned to profit from the explosion of interest in all types of motor sports at all levels," said Barry Davidson, the court-appointed receiver for the track, which has been the subject of litigation between the previous owner and investors. Craig King, president of J.P. King, said the timing is perfect. "The phenomenal success of NASCAR and the Indy Racing League has created a surge of interest among people who want to see all types of racing -- including road racing, drag racing and oval track racing -- on a national and regional level. Spokane Raceway Park has the facilities for a wide range of auto and motorcycle events that can make it an extremely smart investment," said King. In addition to the tracks, grandstands and support buildings, the property includes land that will be sold in separate parcels for potential development, according to King. "When you look at the adjacent casino, the Kalispel Tribe's resort plans, and the growth that is already occurring in the Airway Heights area, the potential for this land is virtually unlimited," said King. King said the firm has not yet defined how the parcels will be divided. "We know that the racing facilities will be sold as one parcel, and there's an operating gravel pit that will be sold as a separate parcel. SEMA Expands Legislative Effort Into Canada PSCA opener
Mihovetzs Cougar, which features a 283 cubic inch 4.6L Modular Mustang engine with twin turbos was the car to beat from the first qualifying session on Saturday running a superlative 6.372 ET at 218 MPH. The pass was good for the number 1 Qualifying position by more than a tenth of a second and eventually stood as low ET of the event. Mihovetz ran 6.55 in round 1 beating Karl Wilson, sent Art Hodges packing with a 6.375 to Hodges 6.79 in round 2, and ousted Clint Hairston with a 6.42 to a valiant but losing 6.50 by the Hairston team.
Thorntons Twin Turbo 57 Chevy uses a 519 cubic inch big block but seemed to be mired in problems from the beginning of the weekend. After spending most of Fridays test session diagnosing a computer glitch the team was loading the car onto the trailer 20 minutes before round 1 qualifying on Saturday after finding the chassis was broken and needed to be welded. They were able to get the upper hand on that problem and returned to the track in time to make the second and final qualifying session but that run resulted in instant tire spin. Tuner Shane Tecklenburg and clutch expert Doug Stewart were able to dig deep into their bag of tricks for their Round 1 confrontation with Jeremy Hangar and eked out a 6.72 to 6.78 win. Round 2 saw Thornton pass Mike Bowman and hold him off 6.719 203 to Bowmans hard charging 6.795 at 214 mph. In the semifinal match with Bob Griffith, Thornton ran another sub par 6.78 as Griffith overpowered the racetrack and had to shutoff.
In the Final Round it was teammate vs. teammate for the bragging rights and more importantly the decision on who was to pickup the team dinner tab. Thornton finally met his match as Mihovetz spanked his teammate with another stellar 6.37 at 219 mph to Thorntons tire spinning 20.70 at 51 mph. Of course it was a win-win situation as the two team cars had accomplished what they setout to do which was to finish 1 and 2 just like they did in the 2007 championship. For the record the ruling on the dinner tab was supposed to be loser pays however Mihovetz graciously snatched the bill from Thornton when the moment of truth came.

Wicked Street of the West video update The decision to make it a multi disc package comes from my viewing recently of volume two of the Lions Dragstrip video by Don Gillespie. A 'must have' for any nostalgia drag fan, this combination of amazing old footage along with the 'Ken Burns' like editing and the stoical narration of Rick Carlson makes this series the new standard from which all future drag racing documentaries will be measured. The first one inspired me, the second one made me realize that Wicked must be done along the same line. Another way cool doc was shown locally last Friday night. BAYTOWN, TX (Mar. 8, 2008) A record-setting crowd of more than 40,000 witnessed the stars of the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League (ADRL) presented by the National Guard go after a $100,000 purse Mar. 8, in the ADRLs season-opening Drag Illustrated Dragpalooza IV at Houston Raceway Park. Joshua Hernandez of nearby Conroe, TX, won the ADRLs marquee Pro Extreme class, while Jim Halsey prevailed in Pro Nitrous, reigning class champ Steve Gorman won in Extreme 10.5, and Ron Procopio won his career-first Pro Extreme Motorcycle event. I knew he left first, but then I caught him pretty fast, Hernandez said after going 3.96 seconds at 191.57 miles per hour over the eighth-mile course to defeat fellow Texan Steve Wiley. I think he had some trouble about half-track and thats when I passed him. Halsey also had to come from behind off the start to beat Randy Weatherford with a 4.03-seconds pass at 183.62 mph. I was gaining on him, but I wasnt really sure I would catch up, Halsey said. It was very, very close at the finish line. In Extreme 10.5, which refers to the cars relatively narrow 10.5-inch-wide rear slicks, Gorman and opponent David Janes made identical 4.41-seconds runs, but Gorman got the win again based on his better reaction time at the start. It was one of those deals where I knew Id have to get him on the (starting) tree, the former commercial pilot said. Fortunately, that worked out just great for me, not so great for him. In just his second ADRL national event, Procopio ran 4.33 seconds at 160.54 mph to handily defeat T.T. Jones in the final round of Pro Extreme Motorcycle action. My crew chief made a few changes right before that run and to be honest, I wasnt so sure about them, but it turns out he was right and I had nothing to worry about, he said. The ADRL returns to action Apr. 25-26, with the 2nd annual Shelor.com Spring Drags at Tulsa Raceway Park in Tulsa, OK. PSCA Opens 2008 Season this weekend "Last year we were consistent in eliminations and we had an average ET of 6.57 when someone was next to us for the entire season," commented Thornton the 4 time champ. "But we need to step up our game for 2008 there are many cars that can run close to us and a couple that are better like John (Mihovetz)." The Team has spent the offseason going over both entries with a fine tooth comb. Mihovetz was able to test his car first at the NHRA Winternationals and the hard work paid off with a great 6.58 which was posted with the throttle closed by 5 seconds and the parachute out.
As for the 57 Chevy the car has been getting a preseason makeover at FASTMotorsports where a new GP Motorsports wiring harness coupled with a few other new parts are expected to yield lower elapsed times and higher speeds. "The car has been in my shop since January and we have essentially retrained ourselves to forget all we took for granted with this car and just take it piece by piece looking for issues," explained Shane Tecklenburg tuner for both teams. "We have found some areas of the car that were severely lacking and holding us back last year. One example is that when we put the 519 in the car last year we could not get the clutch to lock up. If you notice the car did not run big speed in the last few races. We were slipping about 200 rpm in the lights on each run. On our car at 220 we are about 37 MPH per 1000 driveshaft rpm with the current gear and tire growth. Essentially we had more engine than we had clutch. When we tried to step the clutch up - we would shake the tires. We have found something that we think will allow us to use all the power we can make and have the clutch lock properly which should bring our top speed back up." Message from Chris Blair John only raced at the new track a couple of times but was a huge supporter of Top Alcohol racing. He was a regular competitor in Division 6 when I began as a division director and was well liked by any racer, crewmember or fan who ever met him. He stayed competitive in the sport until rule changes made it impossible for his low budget team to run competitively. He then made the move to nostalgia drag racing and was a big supporter of Goodguys events and match races up and down the coast. He will be missed. Chris Blair
